What Michigan moments have brought you to tears?
Sorry, this is not for the manly men. This is for those who are not ashamed to shed a tear, good or bad, over Michigan athletics.
The reason I am asking is because of some weird youtube hole I found myself watching Brock Mealer videos and found myself tearing up. What are some of your Michigan moments that got you the most emotional? I'm sorry if this has been covered before, BUT I'M EMOTIONAL!
As I ponder right now I think my top 3 (other than Brock) are:
- Michigan beating OSU in 2011. It was my senior year and kind of in a weird way meant the end of my college life at UM and the fact that all of my friends and football players would almost certainly be in a different place a year from then.
- Michigan beating ND in 2011. Ok so some of these might just be based around my senior year, but this day was one of the best of my entire life. I will never forget this day.
- I realize as I'm writing this that i'm very focused the last 3-5 years, but regardless, I think that MBB game against Kansas made me cry my last, truly suprising tears of joy. My friends and I were punching each other because we had no other way to express the joy of that shot. Oh man.
Anyways I know my choices have are all fairly recent. I'd love to hear some other emotional memories. i'm sure it will make me cry. CUZ I'M SENSITIVE, OK?

1.) When the MMB plays the first seven notes of the M Fanfare.
2.) When they play the weekly hype video before the team runs out of the tunnel.

The closest I had previously come to getting choked up was when we won the National Championship and Lloyd addresses the team. But, being that I was still in college at the time, I didn't quite appreciate how moving that speech was and I didn't actually shed years.
There have certainly been a few others that brought me close in recent years - Brock taking the field, the team jumping up into the student section I sing the victors after UTL - but the two above stand out the most.

1. Michigan beating OSU in 2003 in Ann Arbor to send the Wolverines to the Rose Bowl. Felt like an eternity since we had been to the Rose Bowl (even though it had only been 6 years...little did we know what was coming in the next decade).
2. The first home game post-9/11 was emotional. The American flags replacing the Big Ten school flags around the Stadium, the teams being on the field for the anthem, the patriotic-themed halftime show...and the security and feeling of vulnerability. All new at that time.
Links to youtube videos of that game's pre-game and halftime performance:

Losing in 2009 v Illinois (1-5, 0-5 Big Ten). I think I realized how bad things were. It was draining.

But everytime I hear this Lloyd Carr speech, I get a little choked up: "You have left... a wonderful legacy, for every team that ever follows you. Youuuuuu, just won, the national championship."

1) Watching Brock Mealer touch the banner is something I'll never forget
2) Being at the Sugar Bowl and seeing the team win with some crazy plays in Hoke's first year

I was deployed at the time but luckily had a TV in my room. I turned on AFN knowing The Game would be on. Pins and needles watching that game alone in my room at 0300. I cried like a little girl when the time finally ran out.

2. Sugar Bowl win and Hemingway's speech was cool.
3. Woodson returning the punt in 97 vs Ohio state, a special feeling and to this day, the loudest I've ever heard that stadium.
4. Denard on senior day was cool.
5. Keith Jackson announcing that Brian Griese was the most outstanding player in the Rose Bowl...

Happy:
2011 OSU, because obviously.
2010 Illinois- a little embarrasing in hindsight, but I was watching at home with my newborn baby girl and was emotional to begin with.
Sad:
2004/2005 OSU- not immediately, but I was pretty shaken up in the aftermath both times. I've said it before, but that '05 Game was worse than the horror for me, by a long shot.
2005 Hockey Regionals- Michigan let a late lead slip away, I was there, a senior, and a member of the Michigan Band for the last time. That, more than the loss, caused me to lose it so badly I had to pull my jersey over my face.

Teared up during the Brock Mealer banner event and when Bo died. I also was misty of course when I watched the ESPN show on the Mealers.
The whole lead-up to the 2006 OSU game was just brutal for me. I was unemployed and I literally had nothing to do the whole week. I was out of chores to do, the house was clean, and I was just watching TV or reading. They had a countdown on ESPN all week, and so I was becoming more and more anxious. Then boom, Bo passes. I was a wreck.

11-26-2011.
My first real win over ohio. I saw 2003 but I was in second grade and remembered very little.
That moment when Avery intercepted it.......everything flashed before me.....all the pain of 7 years and never truly knowing what that feeling of beating them felt like....
I call it the greatest day of my life. It was liberating.
Also, the Basketball B1G Championship in 2011-12. All I ever saw Michigan win in my life was an NIT up to that point.

I call it the greatest day of my life.
I would never, ever admit that to anyone, under any circumstance, ever again. That's the saddest thing I've heard in a while.

2003 when we won the 100th game over OSU. I was a junior at U of M and at the game, obviously. Just so much joy pouring out.
2013 Michigan bball against IU when I got to watch J Mo graduate. Guy has brought so much good to our program. He bought in to Coach B during the worst of times. At that moment, when he got to cut the nets, he was eating subs for a lifetime.
2006 and the #1 vs #2 battle with OSU. I remember listening to radio broadcasts at the tailgate of Bo. That man made our football program and inspired so many that followed. The memories of him and Michigan football my childhood - throwing the football around with my grandpa during halftime - just came flooding back.
August 20th, 2014 at 10:56 AM ^
I expect that response. And you know what? I don't care. You don't know me or what I've been through.
It's the honest to God truth. I've never felt that feeling in my life. It wasn't just the Football struggles. My built up struggles of where I was just 7 months earlier with my serious depression. Everything came flooding back but was erased with that moment.
The ecstasy of that moment, that day, was the top of the world for me. I may get that date tattooed on me. I will admit, trumpet and scream it.

Yeah man you have no idea. We were so far more talented than NC we'd win that game 9 out of 10 times... I think I cried more when a few days later I heard Webber was leaving because I knew that'd be the end to the most iconic team at Michigan in my lifetime.

Without a doubt, Denard's Senior Day got to me. Not only because of how special Denard was for the school, but also because it was "my" last game as a senior. Although Denard was obviously the one out there playing his final home game, it felt like me too as my first game was Denard's fumble TD play against Western. That game effectively brought my student football experience to a close.
I remember getting to the game extra early just to spend a few extra minutes in the Big House and being really emotional as the band came out for my last time as a student. I know it's still recent, but sometimes you can just tell when moments are significant.
It was even more special when Denard actually got to go in and play. I was worried that he was going to have to sit out. That game will always be a special one for me.

I am only 19 so the fact that I couldn't tell you what a MBB or FB national championship feels like depresses me and makes me want to cry already. After the 2006 OSU game, I wept like a baby. The 2013 National Championship and this year's Elite 8 game (which I was in attendance for) didn't make me cry, I just was stunned and didn't want to talk to anyone for a little bit.

I was 16 at the time and attended that game. I was strangely okay after the game. The experience was incredible, with the buildup and atmosphere unlike anything else I've seen. I just had a great time, and it made me appreciate the rivalry that much more. A few days after the game when I realized the devastation of losing that one, sure I probably cried too.

First game as an alum. Being in the stadium, looking at the student section from afar, and experiencing the entire thing without my group of friends. There were tears when the band played The Victors.

Getting sent to Bolivia. That was a crushing day. I was finishing the deep and meaningful lyrics to a new boy band song I'd been working on for hours in my man cave when the phone rang and my buddy Scott called to report I'd been banished to the land of funny hats and ponchos. I have yet to recover.
That, and Bo dying setting off the brutal 4 game swing of:
Lose playing NC game to Ohio in 2006 followed by
USC dismantling us in the 2nd half of the ROse Bowl and laughing at how predictable UM was, followed by
The Horror - which ruined my vacation in Aspen - literally. I was miserable, followed by
Dennis Dixon and Oregon toying with us in a way I'd never seen before...
Just a shitty swing there that led to the 6 years "Process" we're still digging out of...

Extremely rare for me to cry because of Michigan truimph. I remember my mind being blown when we beat Washington State and won the NC in 97.
The only time I remember crying real hard was when we lost to Colorado in 94. I remember where I was exactly and how huge of a blow that loss was.

Cool story bro activate: I was the date of a groom's only sister at a wedding that day. After the ceremony I snuck away to a bar to watch the game and knew I was going to be very late to the reception. With like 4 minutes to play and we were up like 8 or 9 I left assuming we won. I got to the reception late and took an earful from the father of the groom for having missed pictures and speeches. None of this bothered me since UM football > random wedding. However when asked where I was, I said I was watching Michigan beat a very good Colorado team, and then I was told we lost and I didn't see the play live... Ingrained in my skull forever.

Haven't posted much, but this reminded me of being at the Capital One Bowl when I was in 8th grade.
That stadium was 90% Florida fans, and I remember someone walking up to me and saying Tebow was going to kick our ass by 40 points.
Seeing Lloyd on the player's shoulders and the dead silence of the Florida fans was one of the greatest moments ever.
Also being in the student section down in Atlanta and watching beat Syracuse on my 19th birthday was pretty damn awesome too.

Fellow 2012 graduate - I cried tears of joy at UTL and the OSU game for sure. I definitely cried when Brock Mealer touched the banner. I cried when we beat Kansas. I cried at the game in Minnesota when we lost to Duluth in OT. I cried when Bo died. As a kid, I probably cried after every loss.

Walter Smith was the heartbeat of the team back in the early 90's, but in the august of what was to be his senior year, he tore his ACL; he was still voted team captain, and was always a presence on the sideline; Mo snuck him in for one play against Minnesota in November, however, and it is my favorite two-yard gain of all time... shed some happiness tears in the stands on this one (thanks to Wolverine Historian for digging this one up) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XakgFGqSFPU&feature=player_detailpage#t=1312s

Michigan/Kansas in the Sweet Sixteen. My Grandma's funeral was that day and we missed the whole first half and when my whole family and I finally got Red Robin (in our funeral clothes), that's when Trey Burke started to take over. And I vividly remember watching Trey make that shot from 30 and having no immediate reaction, then looking down and just crying. Real emotional day.

I have a few:
- Coach Carr's last game was hard for me. I know there's a lot of people around here that don't really care for the guy, but being born in 91, Lloyd was the only coach I ever really knew up to that point. Beating Tebow and Urban was great, but watching that game knowing it was Lloyd's last was tough.
- Our last second win over PSU in 2005. That season was so disappointing, but that was a huge bright spot to be able to beat a top 10 team that year.
- 2000 Orange Bowl win over Bama. David Terrell is still my favorite Michigan player ever. Plus I was 9. I'm allowed to cry at the age, right?
- The first UTL was pretty awesome. Tears of joy right there. Pure joy.
