At what level of obsession are you at with Michigan Football?

Submitted by icefins26 on

Awhile ago, someone posted a thread on the MGoBlog community about their obsession with MGoBlog. It's obvious we are all die-hard fans of the maize and blue but to what level? To what level has everyone altered their so-called "normal lives" around Michigan Football?

Discuss.

I played golf in an official Michigan sideline coach's shirt and hat, plus Michigan socks and Michigan silk boxers, and I asked a guy exactly where to get the Michigan golf shoes he was sporting.

For me, it adds a huge amount of pleasure to be able to spend Saturday afternoons at the Big House with my sons - all of us are Michigan alums and very into football.  I can't think of a better way to spend a day. Being in Ann Arbor and being part of the energy that is pervasive on football Saturdays is an amazing high.  I love to win and hate to lose, and I am anything but a casual fan.

But in the end, it is still a game.

Interesting that we are getting negged - I live an hour outside of Columbus and have lots of friends who went to OSU.  Yeah, we bust each other's chops about "the rivalry" but many of them have come with me to Ann Arbor over the years for the big game in November and I go with them to the big game at the Horseshoe. Regardless of what team wins, you congratulate the other guy and go get a beer. Does it hurt to lose? Absolutely. But when you lose your perspective, like so many of the asswipes in Columbus who never went to OSU, you have an issue.  Read Brian's great story about his trip an OSU game from a couple of years ago.

I refuse to do anything on Saturday's in the fall besides Michigan football related activities.  Also, I usually end up buying clothes or shoes that are maize and blue.

Completely OT, but if I might recommend a good baking book for your wife: Ratio by Michael Ruhlman. Really fantastic book that's equally useful for novices as it is for professionals (and food science dorks).

And my wife hates the fall, too. She and my mother go spend my money or make quilts while I watch the game with my Dad and a couple friends.

Well, my wife doesn't hate football.  She's actually a South Carolina grad so the main reason she hates fall is 1.)  I'm obsessed and am non-existent on Saturdays and 2.)  South Carolina is rarely on TV but she does get a healthy dose of ESSS EEEE CEEE football on CBS, so I don't feel bad for her.

but our wedding is the week before UCONN and whenever she tells me how many days until our wedding, I tell her how many days till we kick it off against UCONN. This does not make her smile.  (Also, don't worry about me getting to watch the game.  I planned the honeymoon so we will get back on friday night)

Read my words.

I married a wonderful and beautiful woman at the age of 24.  I have been married 20 years and have three perfect daughters.  All three of those kids were born in the off season (first just lucky other two planned).  We ALWAYS take the family vacation over Spring break and summers.  My anniversary is in the off season.  Plan these things now or pay the price later.

I have seen three kinds of sports spouse.

1. I hate football spouse:  This is my personal favorite and my wife.  Usually in the upper 10% of attractive because she would never be caught slumming it from a beer can in a parking lot.  Has zero intrest in the game so you never have to explain the rules or when to cheer.  If negotiated properly will leave you alone your entire college football Saturday OR if you become a top tier husband (lead in a manner that someone would actually want to follow) will actually put out food when it is your turn to host your friends and leave the house to do pilates and yoga.

2. I love football spouse:  Yoke with at your own risk.  Although seems like a grerat idea at the time female nesting priorites will one day take precedence over the game.  Although she might actually cheer when she is suppose to cheer and not say things like, "Hit him!  Hit him!  Why don't they hit him?" the Cameron Diaz "Something About Mary" woman is a hollywood myth that will never understand the 3-3-5 or can explain the spur and bandit.  I love football spouse packs on 3LBs every year of marriage from tailgating and eventually will ask you to coach Saturday soccer.

3. I love another team spouse:  Everything you will come to resent about I love football spouse only now she is wearing a Tressel Vest during The Game or a clover on her cheek every 2nd or 3rd week of September.

This weekend I rattled off the "43 days until... " and the ms. said "is it that soon already???"

August is already gone.  I'm in full countdown mode.  But I will say, what she doesn't know is that an appt. to the spa will soon be made for the afternoon of Sept. 4-- that's what we like to call a win-win situation right there...

... Notre Dame football.  But at least she gets the obsession which is better than a wife who wants me to go to the mall on fall saturdays.

Plus ND-UM usually falls on our anniversary weekend so we can usually make a road trip to AA for a nice anniversary present.

I'm pretty much at the obnoxious level.  I scour the internet all day looking for articles.  I spend way too much time on MGoBlue and MGoBlog (if that is possible).  If I had to pick between UM and my wife...let's just say, the wife can keep the house.

If Rule 1 is not to talk about Mgopoints, Rule 2 must be to talk about Mgopoints.

Seriously, the most overplayed and completely ignored theme on this board is the "don't talk about points" thingy. They are discussed as if they are the raison d'etre of this place.

Mine has grown ever since I decided in 2nd grade that I liked there colors better than MSU. That was before I realized or knew anything about either school. Wow did I make a good choice.  Since then I have gone against most of my family in rooting for Michigan. Sadly I did not have the grades to get into Michigan, but that has not had any effect on my fandom of the school and the sports teams. Thankfully I went to the Michigan of Division II (in my mind anyway, hah!) in GVSU, so I can root for UofM without betraying my school. College Football is my favorite sport to watch and the Wolverines have always either ruined or made my Saturdays.

But I can't understand anything on this blog anymore unless it is accompanied by an incredibly illegible chart depicting something like the number of yards Kevin Koger gained on 3rd down while scratching his nuts and the frequency of the migration of cardinals through Yancy's Butt, Ohio every spring--and how it's all going to equate to Michigan going 9-3 this year and beating Arkansas in the Popeil's Pocket Fisherman Cranberry Bowl.
