This is what the helmet stickers should look like

Submitted by Blue and Joe on

There has been a lot of talk about helmet stickers in the last couple of days. I like the idea, but I'm very wary of the execution.

The stickers from Jim's era were kinda ugly and very big. In the classic photo of Jim and Bo you can count less than 20 stickers on the side of his helmet and it's more than half full.

  1. They are way too big.
  2. They distract from the glorious winged design.

Stickers are not what make the Michigan football helmet so iconic. That's OSU's thing. We should go with something more subtle.

My proposal is the thin block M. (click to enlarge)

I think it's a much cleaner look, and you can fit a lot more stickers on the helmet. Just my two cents.

Love your idea. As long as there are helmet stickers, I'll be happy.

I do like the original helmet stickers, too.

I do like the design by the OP and agree, something smaller that doesn't take away from the larger focal point that is the winged helmet.  I would even be in favor of one of the newer logos like this one:

Adjusting for size to make it a smaller helmet sticker that's done right, but it would blend the new and the old while bringing back helmet stickers.

How about yellow jackhammers! :-)

On a more serious note ... I'd love to see a mock-up of small, plain maize footballs.  No bigger than 1/2".  Put about 30 to represent a standout player and see what that looks like.

I'd bring back the old football design that we used under Bo/Mo.  Just make the footballs smaller.

The Block M is nice and all, but it doesn't look right on our helmets.

Well done! I don't want stickers, but I could live with small M's. You obviously did that in photoshop, can you make the M's blue but with a matte finish? I kinda wondered what they would look like if they were just like "shadow" M's that you could barely see.

I definitely love this idea if helmet stickers will be a thing. Someone call a meeting with the Jims, or at least make sure this picture gets put on each of their respective desks.

Different stickers for games against different teams:

A flaming couch sticker for a good play against MSU

A poop in a cooler sticker for OSU

Red faced Brian Kelly sticker for ND

Baby Seal stickers for baby seal games

I guess I better not make a suggestion for Penn State...

I just can't wait to get to a point when this is trivial. Does anyone give a crap what looks like what if we're winning? I'd like stickers to return because they are special to CFB. Like bands, it's something that seems cheesy if done at the NFL level but perfectly suited to the pride that comes with CFB/HS. So, I'd like them back but they could be stickers of.....*you name it*.....if we're winning.

I won't downvote this, but having Ms on the helmet doesn't look right at all.  It strikes me as cheesy.

I loved the old football design.  I agree that it should be smaller, though.  It's probably easier to manufacture them small now than it was 30 years ago.

It's been said before, but the purpose of helmet stickers has nothing to do with the aesthetics or looks of the uniform.  They're a reward to motivate the players.  Everything I've read, and from my own playing days in high school, the players absolutely love helmet stickers.  So for me, if the Harbaugh wants to bring them back and the players want them, that's good enough for me.  Who cares if the people in the stands think it's ugly or isn't pretty.

Having said that, a thought occurred to me to make whatever the design of the helmet stickers be blue.  Yes, the same color as the blue part of the helmet.  Up close, the players will be able to see them, and appreciate them, but from a distance and on TV, the fans wouldn't notice.  Just a thought.
