what happened?

Submitted by maizenbluedevil on

I was at a wedding today.

My plan was to avoid the internet / civilizattion and dowload a torrent of today's game.

That didn't happen. I asked someone at the weding to look up the score on their phone, due to curiosity / lack of patience.

So, can someone sum up what happened and wht went wrong?  Obvious "this sucks" aside, why did we lose the game?  I'm looking for a narrative and a "what this means for the future."  I'm an RR supporter, but, if we can't get it done in the B10....well....

Can someone sum it up for me?

Thanks.

I love you guys.

Also I'm drunk lol.  :D :P

1st half was very similar to last week. We moved the ball well, had a turnover and went into the half down 14. Denard got hurt in the 3rd. We ended up being down 21. Tate came in and they made a couple good shots at a comeback (pulling within 7 with 6 min to go) but unfortunately couldn't get a key stop to get a last attempt down one score. Too many turnovers (4) and penalties that killed drives to win it. Molk and Martin both basically went out injured in the first half. Mouton got injured in the 4th. Pretty good effort all things considered.

Did anybody else feel like the two OOB kickoffs were the worst things that happened and might have been all that separated Michigan from an amazing comeback win?  Tate was obviously getting it done on offense until he made a bad decision that I'm chalking up to desperation, and the defense was holding Iowa pretty well throughout the last 10 minutes of the game - as long as the starting field position was reasonable (I'd like to think this had something to do with the fact that Iowa got further away from the student section as their field position got better).

I normally just sigh and shake my head rather than complaining loudly about kicking problems [when those problems are FG-related], but the opponent can't do anything to force you to kick off OOB.  Twice.  WTF.

I thought those 2 OOB kickoffs were huge today.  They killed our momentum and didn't give our defense much room for error on those 2 drives.  Our special teams has been a liability all season long.  It says a lot when one of your best special teams plays in a game is a kickoff that goes for a touchback.

Extremely ugly and defense-less game by Michigan, until the 4th quarter where Mich pulled within 7 , when the kicker idiotically kicked the ball out of bounds, giving Iowa excellent FP in which to run the clock and set up the FG to go up by two possessions and quell the comeback

We just didn't have an answer for a physical team.  They controlled the line of scrimmage despite some big runs by us.  Oh, and our special teams suck...really suck.

We got many more yards than them, but turned the ball over four times. Molk, Robinson, and Martin are all a little banged up, but it doesn't seem to be serious. Demens was considerably more reliable at MLB than Ezeh, and he made several key plays. The secondary is still full of freshmen.

We're just really not that good. After going 5-0 we all had a false sense of greatness.

We are as good as most of us thought we'd be preseason though, which is a 7-5ish team.

1) The defense played decently well considering opposing field position and general lack of talent/depth

2) Special teams always seem to haunt us somehow, this time in the form of kickoffs (and going for that FG was pointless I was hoping for a fake or something)

3) Denard played tentative, especially after his INT, and our offense cannot score enough points without him playing well

Demens started over Ezeh. We stopped Iowa, 3 and out, on their first drive. We went 75 yards on 13 plays and took the lead 7-0. Next Iowa drive, 3 and out. On our 2nd drive, Lewan got a 15 yarder for unsportsmanlike conduct, killing that drive. Ezeh came in to give Demens a breather. They pancaked him and busted a ~15 yard run right up the middle. They had a 9 play, 84 yard drive for a TD, aided by the pancake and another 15 yard face mask penalty. On our next drive, Molk comes out with an injury. (OH NO! It's 2009 ALL OVER AGAIN!!!) Khoury comes in, so RichRod goes completely vanilla on offense, running out of the i-formation. I didn't question him, as the shotgun snaps from Khoury were shaky. But eventually Khoury gets his sea legs and the offense starts moving again. Sometime around the 3rd quarter, I start wondering why I haven't heard Martin's name called at all, given that he is a BEAST! I spend the rest of the game looking for him on defense and don't see him. He records zero tackles on the game. I think he missed a lot of time, but can't be sure until UFR. In the 3rd quarter, Denard gets hurt (OH NO! It's 2009 ALL OVER AGAIN!!!) Only this time, Tate comes in and leads some impressive drives. Yes, he throws two picks, but otherwise looks like the best backup QB in America. Special teams weren't spectacular (OSU gave up a TD on a KR to start the game. That's bad special teams) but Hagerup looked good. Iowa went bend-but-don't break on us allowing a lot of yards, but turnovers at critical junctures doomed us. Lewan did a great job on Claiborne FWIW. We needed one last stop to give ourselves a chance to get it to OT, but couldn't get it done. Iowa kicked the FG and that was that. Fortunately, we get a bye week to heal up.

"I start wondering why I haven't heard Martin's name called at all"

I kept looking for him too.  He was standing on the sidelines the whole 2nd half, at least.   Did he play at all?

"Special teams weren't spectacular"

That's rather generous considering the two kickoffs OOB.

Too many big mistakes that cost us the game despite putting up crazy yards. As well as some key players being banged up.

Last week we could have won... This week we should have won.

I'm actually more optimistic than I would have ever imagined after coming off of two losses. The rest of the schedule sets up nicely (starting with the much needed bye next week).

to go up 7-0, and I was like, cool.  Then we stunk for a while and found ourselves down 21-7, and I was like, damn.  Then Denard got hurt, and I was like, damn.  Then Tate came in and brought us back from the dead and we were down 7, and I was like, cool.  Then the defense couldn't hold and Iowa went up 10, and I was like damn.  Then Forcier threw an interception, and I was like, damn.  Through the whole game the special teams sucked, and I was like, damn.

That pretty much sums it up.
