What to do in Madison?

Submitted by Jimmy Ballgame on
I am making my first trek to Madison this weekend, and I am looking for some advice from those that are familiar with Madison and the Wisconsin game day experience. What are the must see places and must do things in Madison? Which bars/restaurants are best? What is the pregame atmosphere like for 11 am games?

I was about 1 second away from posting the exact same question: So I'm going with some friends to Madison for the game this weekend (seemed like a much better idea when we planned the trip in August) and was just wondering if anyone on the blog could make recommendations for places to eat, bars, or anything else that I should see/do while in Wisconsin. Are there landmarks similar to our Blimpie Burger, Zingerman's, etc.? Thanks for the help. Look forward to hearing the answers.

Secondeded. I went to both the '05 and the '07 games, and the UW fans were about as brutal as the games. I've been to several away games (never OSU though), and UW fans have been by far the worst. After living in WI for a couple years, I can attest that there isn't much else to do outside of drinking, so yeah, be prepared for drunk meatheads. Needless to say, I didn't feel like sticking around after those games, so I guess I can't reccomend anywhere to eat or anything. Bottom line, drunk, obnoxious fans who won't hesitate to yell and/or spit at you for having the audacity to wear Maize & Blue.

I will always remember 2006, when we were playing Wiscy in Ann Arbor - I got into about 3-4 separate heated arguments with Wisconsin fans outside of Rick's. The first couple were BEFORE 11 PM (they were already hammered and annoying). And the other 1-2 (sorry, can't remember - I was pretty drunk.... Ricks...) were after 2 AM. Their fans are the most underrated for "asshole fans of the Big 10".

State Street Brats will definitely get a visit. Non-bar-wise, I'd also recommend checking out the union and getting some ice cream there. I've also got a soft spot for a bar near there (not on state street, but just down the block from Brats) called the Red Shed. Worth checking out - excellent long islands served in mason jars like they use at Dominick's.

Also, The Dane and Brats are probably the two most well-known places. There's a German bar somewhere around that I can't remember the name of that I've been to that was good, also been to Brothers, Red Shed, some martini bar, some bar a couple blocks off of State that was known to be full of underagers (EDIT: this was Kollege Klub, or "the KK"), and some other bars I vaguely remember including one where a friend and I met four women there for a night on the town and ended up in their limo with them. Madison is fun.

The German bar is probably the Essenhaus, which, because this is Madison, connected to another affiliated German bar- the Come Back In. Both are excellent if you want your beer by the litre and served in a glass boot. For a great meal, check out the Old Fashioned, which is on the capitol square. If a giant burger topped with bacon, onions, cheddar and a fried egg with a side of fried cheese curds sounds right to you, you cannot do better than the Old Fashioned.

on Monroe, right across from the stadium. Huge outdoor patio. Be there at 8am gameday for kegs & eggs. Inebriated is going to be the only way to watch this game. 2 years ago the Wisconsin band marched through on their way to the stadium. Awesome time. http://www.stadiumbar.com/

It's right near the Great Dane, by the capitol, bout half a mile from the main campus area. Big beers (yards) and POLKA! I know, but you have to give it a chance. Seriously.

Try and get to the Sunroon Cafe for breakfast. It's on State St. The blueberry pancakes are awesome and the Florentine omlet is very good as well. As for bars, when I went I made the mistake of trying to go to specific ones only to find out that for the most part, they are all the same. My suggestion is just walk around and go into one. There is a bar on pretty much every street, and you can get an idea of what the crowd will be like by looking at the people in line. If it's not your scene, walk half a block to the next one. Have fun, Madison is a great place.

i went to undergrad at Michigan and now am in grad school at UW. I have a ton of friends coming up for the game, and I also know many fellow Michigan grads now in Madison. If you have student section tickets (which a ton of us do), MEET AT GATE 5 outside the stadium at 10:30AM. The way student tickets (vouchers) work is you get a real ticket corresponding to a specific seat with those who you go in with. This means that, hopefully, we can organize a large Michigan contingent to walk in together and be in the middle of the Wisconsin student section, which would be pretty cool. SO: GATE 5, 1030AM. let's get loud. p.s. for a Friday night or Sat night dinner, The Old Fashioned right off the Capitol has THE best burgers in town -- just be prepared to wait a little bit for a table. Go BLUE!

You'll have a great time in Madison. Since the game starts at 11am CT, most people will start showing up between 7 and 8. We usually park for free in the neighborhoods and walk to the stadium. There are a number of good bars across from the Stadium. Contrary to what a few others have said, my wife and I both think that Madison is one of the best places to visit. Both the fans and the atmosphere is great. We almost always meet great new people old and young before the game. Of course there will be a few drunk students who can get offensive, but you should expect that for any road game. Enjoy - let's bring home a win! Go Blue!

Go to the Nitty Gritty, Dotty Dumplings for great burgers. State Street Brats is a good spot. The Kollege Klub is a frat/athlete dance bar. MadHatters is okay. Wondos is okay. I'm from Wisconsin and will be going out for the game as well. I'd just recommend that you go to State Street and bar hop from there. There are bars close to stadium too when you're going that direction. Stadium Bar is actually the place I'd recommend you get your last refreshment at. Enjoy the game and Go Blue.

As my handle indicates, I'm a Michigan alum in grad school at UW in my 6th year (that was depressing to type). A lot of this has been said, but let me give my take. The best bars are downtown. I don't care for much on State Street (Brats is a huge frat boy hangout whenever I'm there). State Street is a lot of fun to walk down/get a bite to eat, sort of like Main Street with no cars. Downtown is where the really good bars are at: Old Fashioned is the best, but extremely crowded. They make great food, and have every beer brewed in the state available for purchase. The Great Dane is a close second (I actually like it more). It's still busy, but much bigger. Plus they brew their own beer and have great food. The best thing about downtown bars is that you'll be avoiding the undergrads. Madtown people are really nice, active, and hospitable. The students, are not. If you want drown sorrows in beer or have a load of fun with a group of friends, go to the Essen Haus/Come Back In. Boots are hard to get, but the beer is flowing and the atmosphere is great. Madison has great restaurants if you are looking for something nice. Willy Street is the best for variety (it's the hippie -> hipster part of town). Magnus is the best food in town, but $$$$. If you get a chance and the weather is nice, go to the Memorial Union and get some ice cream. They serve good beer there too, but you need a student ID or union membership most of the time. It's worth trying if you get there Friday afternoon since they rarely card. You can step out to the terrace and enjoy the beautiful lake. For game day, be ready for some heckling by students. I've been to most Big Ten stadiums, and UW students get jacked up for Michigan. The old people are really nice, especially close to the stadium since Barry Alverez has started a campaign to "Roll Out the Red Carpet". My in-laws came for the MSU game and got two "F-U"s on the way, but many more "Welcomes". Be ready for piped in music at the game. A lot of god-awful piped in music. The student section won't show up until half time, and probably won't live up to your expectations since it is not a night game. Jump Around is fun to watch, though. If you are in the student section, have thick skin. It's fun to play along with them. I love Madison, it's a better town than Ann Arbor. Make sure to enjoy it by staying away from campus bars. Campus food/bars are generic for a big 10 school. If you have family, go to the Vilas Zoo - largest free zoo in the US, and Olbrich Gardens is nice even in the cold.

I read through some comments and should mention: Dotty's Dumplings has the best food/burgers in the campus area and a good beer selection. Second best cheese curds in town (Old Fashioned is best). Make sure to try this fatty delicacy while in town - just be careful of where you get it. Big 10 near the stadium has awful cheese curds. Dane, Old Fashioned, Dotty's, and a few others are amazingly good.

and a bonus its right next to Ian's pizza. Both are about 2 blocks from the Kohl Center. If you are the wake up early type and aren't looking to get hammered (who would that be?) stop by Ancorra coffee, best coffee in town, right off the capital square. Just an FYI- forcast is for rain on Saturday, but it should be in the mid-50s

Madison and AA are actually pretty similar in many respects. Most of the good places have been said, especially State Street Brats, but the devoted Ann Arborite should feel right at home in Wisky
