What David Brandon Should Do Now

Submitted by sports fan on
David Brandon should file the University response in 30 days (preferrably 20), not 90 days. An he should ask the NCAA to move up it's timetable accordingly. Why? It is in the University's best interest. Gets this behind us. Less attorney and consultant costs. Shows the University stands up when it needs to. Re-establish some integrity in all U of M athletics. It is in David Brandon's best interest. Shows he will be a forceful leader. Shows U of M to be in good hands. Shows he can and will deal with issues head on. Shows he is in control of U of M athletics. It is in Rich Rodriguez's best interests. The sooner the better. If the script set out below is followed (approximated), he will know exactly where he stands, and again, the sooner the better. A chance to get this all out of the way before the season starts. Why would a filing be possible within 30 days? As far as I can tell (from way far away) there isn't really anything that is not known. Apparently all but one of the individuals involved has been very forthcoming. There is no mystery. We don't need to follow money trails or other complex investigations. There is no reason to drag this out. The type of violations are known, the extent of violation is known, the typical penalties, either self-imposed or NCAA imposed, are known, the extenuating circumstance, if any, are know. What should be done? At least 5 groups should be hard at work. 1.One group should be cataloging all violations, complete with explanations, misunderstandings, reasons. NO EXCUSES, however. I would be shocked if this has not already been done in some form. 2.One group should be researching all varieties of sanctions for the offenses of which we are guilty, both self-imposed and NCAA imposed, so we can assess our own appropriate penalties. 3.Another group should be assembling all the documentation the NCAA has required. 4. Another group should be putting together all the policy and procedure changes that will be needed to insure neither these or any other violations can occur in the future. 5. A fifth group should be convened. This group will determine the self imposed sanctions. Someone or some group should be assembling the report to the NCAA even as the other groups are completing their work. I would be surprised if this isn't either in process or already completed. But let's not drag it out. Just do it.

This shouldn't be rushed. You're given 90 days so you have that time to prepare the most complete report possible. I'd rather it be a long slow process with no mistakes then a quick process that ends with poor results.

I wish the process could be completed within 30 days, but unfortunately it doesn't work that way. August will be fine, as long as it isn't a week before the UConn game.

How about we all not worry about this, since there is nothing we can do to affect it, and because it's obvious we've got an Athletic Director who knows what to do, and because it's also obvious Rich Rod is on the verge of a breakout season that will make this all irrelevant?

But following the FIU precedent... 1. Terminate the man who lied to the NCAA--he may have been trying to protect the University, but the message needs to be sent. 2. Eliminate one coach position for a year(re-assign outside coaching) 3. Cut 2 hours of practice time spread over the next two years for every hour they went over. Cancel 3 or 4 practices altogether. 4. One less coach can be out recruiting at a time 5. No cost of living adjustments for Rodriguez and staff for two years 6. Follow the action plans I'm sure they have been developing since the story broke. 7. Accept being written up by the NCAA and the 2 years probation the NCAA will add and put this behind us. 8. Lets get that hoops practice facility built already!

Identifying the malcontents within the Athletic Department who are actively working to sabotage Rich Rodriguez and get rid of them. Rozenberg didn't get wind of the discrepancy with the CARA reports by accident. This divide within is poison that won't necessarily go away once this investigation ends unless is gets removed.

I think David Brandon should just call the NCAA dude and say, hey, we're sorry for what we did and we promise not to do it again.

The USC thing is very different. USC isn't public, so FOIA doesn't really apply and the main target, Reggie Bush, was long gone during the investigation, so he didn't have to cooperate. If memory serves, he actually talked to the NCAA as a result of the lawsuits by would-be agents (am I right here?).

the NCAA COI doesn't meet again until August. They are not going to move up that meeting because it simply "fits Michigan's agenda" better. I agree it would be good for us, but VERY unlikely to happen.
