David Brandon should file the University response in 30 days (preferrably 20), not 90 days. An he should ask the NCAA to move up it's timetable accordingly.
It is in the University's best interest. Gets this behind us. Less attorney and consultant costs. Shows the University stands up when it needs to. Re-establish some integrity in all U of M athletics.
It is in David Brandon's best interest. Shows he will be a forceful leader. Shows U of M to be in good hands. Shows he can and will deal with issues head on. Shows he is in control of U of M athletics.
It is in Rich Rodriguez's best interests. The sooner the better. If the script set out below is followed (approximated), he will know exactly where he stands, and again, the sooner the better. A chance to get this all out of the way before the season starts.
Why would a filing be possible within 30 days?
As far as I can tell (from way far away) there isn't really anything that is not known. Apparently all but one of the individuals involved has been very forthcoming. There is no mystery. We don't need to follow money trails or other complex investigations. There is no reason to drag this out. The type of violations are known, the extent of violation is known, the typical penalties, either self-imposed or NCAA imposed, are known, the extenuating circumstance, if any, are know.
What should be done?
At least 5 groups should be hard at work.
1.One group should be cataloging all violations, complete with explanations, misunderstandings, reasons. NO EXCUSES, however. I would be shocked if this has not already been done in some form.
2.One group should be researching all varieties of sanctions for the offenses of which we are guilty, both self-imposed and NCAA imposed, so we can assess our own appropriate penalties.
3.Another group should be assembling all the documentation the NCAA has required.
4. Another group should be putting together all the policy and procedure changes that will be needed to insure neither these or any other violations can occur in the future.
5. A fifth group should be convened. This group will determine the self imposed sanctions.
Someone or some group should be assembling the report to the NCAA even as the other groups are completing their work.
I would be surprised if this isn't either in process or already completed. But let's not drag it out. Just do it.
