What the BCS deserves this season
The BCS richly deserves a title game that nobody wants to watch because nobody thinks it is remotely close to matching up the two best teams. Here is a scenario that probably won't happen, but I really wish it would:
Alabama loses to Auburn
Texas loses to A&M
Alabama beats Florida for the SEC Championship
TCU, Cincy, and BSU all end up undefeated.
The way it seems to work, this scenario would give us TCU vs Cincinnati for the National Championship, while Boise State is on the outside again, trying to figure out how to sue the NCAA and win.
If this happened, the NCAA would lose a lot of money and come under a lot of pressure from sponsors and networks not to ever let this happen again. And maybe, just maybe, the NCAA would seriously discuss a playoff this time.
One can only hope.

The real question is does a one loss 'Bama/Texas/UF team finish below an undefeated TCU?

If that loss had come earlier in the season, I'd say they probably leap frog the horned frogs (ha!), however with this few games left in the year, I dont think even the BCS is dumb enough to place a one loss Bama/Texas/UF ahead of TCU.

UT/FLA/ALA probably finish behind TCU in that scenario because of how well they have played in the MWC, a conference that has earn alot of pub because of the beating Utah put on Alabama last year. However those one loss teams probably finish ahead of an undefeated UC and Boise St.

But if Alabama loses to Auburn and then beats Florida for the SEC championship, you have to think they'd get the nod over the other winless teams.

You have to be winless to get into the NC game.....Damn, we just missed it last year.

...and 1/18 each of six (EDIT: 1/12 of four, top and bottom are dropped) computer ratings. The voters will get whichever teams they want into the BCS title game.

I would have said in plain and simple terms it deserves to die but to each their own I guess

And yet... people will still watch. You're talking about teams from the 5th and 33rd largest media markets in the country here.

I'm almost certain USC would find a way to get back into the national championship discussion.

They've lost 3 games-Washington, Oregon, Stanford. They are so out. Now, Pac 10 champ? Maybe, but probably not.
Not to mention that the Big East is a BCS conference. It would be utterly ridiculous to keep Cinci out if most or all of this stuff pans out.
November 26th, 2009 at 1:36 AM ^
I'm pretty sure it's actually impossible for them to win the Pac 10. Whoever wins the Oregon Civil War game is going to the Rose Bowl
November 26th, 2009 at 8:16 AM ^
This is true; the only teams left, I believe, are Oregon, Stanford, and Oregon State, all Oregon has to do to get the title is win out (then Ohio State might finally win a bowl game)

You need to recalibrate your sarcasm meter...
November 26th, 2009 at 8:10 AM ^
Well, when you look at it that way...you're right. My bad. Plus ones all around.

Suppose Florida gets beat by FSU, in addition to the above scenario. That would most definitely make a TCU vs Cincinnati title game a reality.
Another scenario: Bama beats Auburn and juuust barely beats Florida (who beats FSU) in the SEC title game, but Texas loses badly to A&M and the rest of the unbeatens remain that way. Then what? Would you put in TCU/Cincy over Florida? I wonder what Urban Meyer would have to say about this scenario... somehow it seems eerily familiar.

There already is a playoff in college football, unfortunately it's the SEC Championship game.

I don't care if it's the National Champ. game or not, any BCS bowl with Cincy, TCU, or Boise is going to be unwatchable. Unfortunately this isn't your Dad's Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange bowls anymore.

Although at first glance I would tend to agree with you, lets look at this from the perspective of Basketball.
If you had a "BCS" style system for Basketball don't you think the same arguments would be had for "non-traditional" powerhouses like Memphis? I know they haven't won a championship, but in 2008 and 2009 they definitely showed they could hold their own against the more traditional teams.
I know that it's weird looking at schools like TCU, Cinci or Boise State in the same light as Texas/Florida/Alabama. But, I think if you look at the example of Basketball you will see that it may not be as lopsided as you originally think.

What would really be great for the BCS, is to have a TCU vs. Cincinnati title game, that ends 6-3 in 9 overtimes. Then maybe they would consider a playoff.
