What are you thankful for on Thanksgiving week?

Submitted by Noleverine on

On the week of Thanksgiving, it is important to look back and consider what we are thankful for, both as human beings and Michigan football fans.

I am thankful for Brady Hoke, our tremendous head coach. I am thankful for Mattison, our NFL DC who turned things around so much more quickly than anyone could have ever imagined. I am grateful for Borges, who despite some disagreements we have had this season, seems to have quite a pair on him when calling plays.

I am thankful for Mike Martin, Ryan Van Bergen, Troy Woolfolk, and the rest of the seniors for sticking with it through the most tumultuous career any players have ever had at Michigan. I am thankful for Jordan Kovacs and his inspiring story. I am grateful for Denard, Fitz, and the rest of the team, for representing the program in a way that would make Bo proud, and for sacrificing as much of their time as they do so that we may enjoy our Saturday afternoons.

I am thankful for 9-2 and a shot at a ten-win season. I am grateful for a possible chance to play in a BCS bowl for the first time since '06. I am thankful for the direction this program is heading, and the quality young men it will continue to shape. But most of all, I am thankful for a chance to smack Ohio State in the mouth, stand over them, and let them know that “WE’RE BACK!”

I am thankful that I can now rest assured that this is finally, officially not 2010 in any shape, since this team has done something that last year's team never could/would have.

Yay.

That my husband and kids were up for giving up our traditional Thanksgiving (including my husband's annual turkey bowl with his grade school friends) to go to Ann Arbor for the game; that my husband agreed to stay at the hotel with our daughter, who didn't want to sit through a football game, so my son and I could go; and that we have a pretty good chance of finally taking care of business.

My answer when people ask me: I am thankful I'm not a turkey.
I am thankful for being a healthy male, who has been blessed with a family who cares about me. I am thankful for the opportunity to start my career in January with a top knotch company, less than 20 days after I graduate. I am thankful for my freedoms that we sometimes take advantage as Americans. I am thankful to have been able to attend the University of Michigan. I am thankful for my friends who have always been there for me.

Michigan wise: I am thankful for Coach Hoke and Mattison. I am thankful for Denard and everything he brings to this team. I am thankful for the defensive playmakers we have on this team, Jordan Kovacs, Mike Martin, and my favorite Jake Ryan. I am also thankful for Coach Belein and the current team as well as the future of Mitch McGary! I am thankful I'm not a spartan or a buckeye!

For good old fashioned football that has made all of us go in the backyard and throw that pig skin around as if we were actually in the Big House playing in front of the Michigan faithful.

If we're talking Michigan-related: just about everything right now. Dang does it feel good to watch a team go out and dominate. Hopefully basketball starts gelling a bit in Maui so I can enjoy them as well.

If we're talking thankful in general: Insulin. Strange to think that the diagnosis I got a few months ago would have been a death sentence less than 90 years ago.

I'm thankful for the beautiful wife I do not deserve. For the two slimy little aliens swimming around in her belly. For the beautiful house and car and bulldog this poor kid from Northern Michigan never thought he'd see. For pepperoni hot pockets. And the little reese's peanut butter cups. For my wealthy sister in law who helps to supply my Michigan addiction. For a good-paying job that affords me time to read mgoblog. For the fantastic group of young men who Rich and Brady have recruited and molded. For a coaching staff who I believe have helped those young men towards self-actualization like no other staff in the world could. For Trey Burke. And Zack Novak. And Tim Hardaway. And for the elite coaching staff who recruited them to the school that I love. For Firefly on blue-ray, and Big Bang Theory, and the million silly things that make my wife smile. For hot showers and cold pizza and watery tap beer. And armored polar bears. I really want an armored polar bear, and then my life will be complete.

I'm thankful for (no particular order) the good Lord Jesus, America, Brady Hoke, turkey, my penis, boobies, the Beavis and Butt-Head resurrection, Coach K, seat belts, Beethoven, Denard, Brain Cook, all my peeps and homies, and lots of other stuff I can't think of right now.

EDIT: Oh, and Thomas Jefferson (the poster above reminded me of that!!)

Most of all, I'm thankful that I am healthy, with a wonderful girlfriend and family that cares for me. I'm thankful for a good job and a good life in general that makes me happy. I'm also thankful that I am a good person in general who helps those who need it when I can. I am also thankful that I can recieve the BTN in Albany, New York.

Specific to the program, I am thankful for our new coaches. I am also thankful for "those who stayed" through the most challenging period of Michigan football in the modern era. I am thankful for the return to a Michigan defense that resembles one from the glory years, and also for the idea that our gorgeous OC seems to be playing more to the strength of our weapons. I am thankful for looking forward to Michigan football on crisp afternoons, rather than watching with trepidation and wondering how our mighty Wolverines fell so far. I am thankful we hold ourselves to a higher standard - that we are not Ohio State or Michigan State or even, it appears, Penn State.

And I am thankful to be able to look forward to what is to come with excitement! It's going to be a fun ride.

I'm thankful for my parents. Two of my grandparents passed this year and from my parents reaction I finally understood the magnitude that parents have on one's life. I'm also thankful to be graduating from this great university in about a months time. GO BLUE!

Life, health, loving family and friends, each of the nine wins so far and the optimism that ten is well within our reach next weekend. I have to say though, the second win almost cost my ticker the first two things on my list.

My mom died of brain cancer this past summer. I live in Korea but was able to make it home and be by her side for her last week. It gave her happiness and gave me peace. I'm thankful for that week, and I'm thankful for my mom, who every Thanksgiving dinner would make us go around the table and say what we were happy for. As a kid, I didn't like it. Now as an adult, I continue the tradition with my family.

That my oldest son is finally getting to experience a great season from the student seats before he has to move back to the real world section next year. And that I only have to write one more tuition check for him!

I am thankful that my wfie's family, who will be at the house Saturday for the second turkey dinner of the weekend, does not mind that I won't be there in the opening hours because I will be at Michigan Stadium hopefully watching Buckeye tears.

Michigan related: Defense, and a coaching staff that gets it. Otherwise, being active duty Navy, definitely thankful for being home over this holiday, will be able to watch THE game, and thankful for my shipmates still on duty somewhere outhere, Sun never sets on the US Navy!
