And how much?
well that's just, like, your opinion, man
Buckeye tears. Still plentiful in Cbus.
Thats a tough way to lose. A lot.
Of the bile.
Make it a triple
Dalmore,something to dull the pain
That's what you get when you can't keep it for more than ten seconds without dumping it or icing it while UMD keeps it for a minute straight. Just ridiculous.
Felt like they didn't want it. They weren't skating hard to get after the puck, the last goal showed that with an easy pass to a guy who beat his man.
It was like a 2 minute shift for Langlais and Merrill and at least one of the forwards (I think Winnett got caught out).
The poor play may have just been fatigue, but what killed us was icing the puck 2-3 times in OT when it was totally unnecessary. Got away with a couple in regulation too where one extra step or a not-crazy pass would have cleared the zone.
There must have been at least 3 or 4 pointless icings where our skater just needed to take one or two more strides. I'm not questioning their heart, but it certainly wasn't the smartest game U-M ever played.
That was a bad shift, but I'd first like to tell Hockey East to kindly fuck off and request the NCAA to never assign them anywhere near an important game again.
I'd rather have had WCHA refs whose parents had been killed by Ted Kacynzski.
dont know how far ill get.....
190 proof grain alcohol. Until im numb and dumb. Go blue and goodnight
A great season, a hard fought game. A toast to Michigan hockey! Whiskey. Old Forester. It's not expensive but it's pretty good.
So proud to be Blue.
Proud of this team
This Minnesotan was pulling for UMD, but there's no shame in the result tonight. One team would win, which meant one had to lose. Michigan played a fine game of hockey; it ended up not being quite enough. That's how life goes sometimes.
Congratulations to both sides for getting so far in such a crazy system as the NCAA hockey tournament, and additional congratulations to UMD for being that little bit better.
I hate college hockey. I'll never watch it again until next season.
if it didn't hurt.
Wood Chuck Cider.
Geez, Minn-Duluth just wanted it more in OT.
Where was the heart from our guys?
Wood chuck cider? Really? You can do better than that.
Whiskey, because it tastes like hardship.
fuck the refs. You can't win when you play over half a period on the pk
Nothing because I have to pull a relay for life shift, but if I could scotch until I can't see.
Supposed to go to that. Can't bring myself to get off of my couch right now. If I went I was planning on sneaking in beer. But I'm a second semester senior and now seem to lack respect for others.
I had the greatest victory celebration ever planned, I am so fucking pissed. Would have been the most epic thing in the history of mgoblog for sure. Michigan better win a NC in one of the 3 major sports in the next two years. BTW great season.
HEY EVERYONE, I FOUND OUR JINX!!!
I actually went through the open thread looking for the guy who jinxed it, and his was the one I found.
Jesus guys, I feel bad enough. Do you have to stomp on my soul right now?
it might be your nuts, so you've got that going for you.
(In all seriousness, I don't think a one of us went into this expecting a loss.)
I did. Because I wanted Michigan to win. And I never get what I want. Now, I leave you with my self pity and head back to my beer.
it would be the first time
But I didn't think it was an automatic win. Win in the big upset, then get upset? I saw that it could happen. I wasn't thinking we'd automatically lose, either (No HUR I called it!). I figured it would go down to a lucky bounce and one goal win, either way. And if I was leaning, I just thought the hockey team was due for that bounce to go their way.
Negged for complaining about us stomping your soul flatter than a pancake.
I'm going to drink everything in the world to forget about that. damn good season, destroyed by a load of shit
But what about the dolphins! You are going to have to piss so badly in the morning...
The gal's wine supply is all that is in the house but I am pounding that shit down until my pee turns pink.
Otherwise known as Blue Moon.
That must mean RCMB is more happy than when they won it themselves.
Strangely, I don't care, especially with the way their hockey program is comparable to a giant, smoking crater now that they hired the CCHA commissioner to coach their hockey program.
Plus we still can raise the CCHA championship banner in Yost...;-)
It's because it's 3.2% Blue Moon, and not full strength.
Pendelton whiskey. Writing an apology note to my wife in advance.
blackout mode this evening
It was going to be Johnny walker blue label in celebration but now what ever will dull the pain, cheap beer perhaps. Damn IT!!!!
BUT WHAT THE FUCK REFS
Seriously, Hockey East refs should be banned from ever being in the same fucking arena as a Michigan. Two consecutive years of screwing over Michigan in the tournament with a terrible early whistle. UMD outplayed us, but we scored 3 times and were credited for only 2 for the second fucking year in a row.
Agreed. Game ended 3-2 with Michigan crowned as champs in regulation.
Michigan got screwed, but it was definitely NOT an early whistle. That puck was across the goal line before the whistle blew. Score the most goals (in regulation) and lose. NCAA hockey refs suuuuuuuuuuuuuck! EDIT: Hockey East refs. (But CCHA refs are nothing to write home about either.)
I'm having a little tonic with my vodka (blue label, of course).
They had a great season. I haven't followed them closely but making the National Chanpionship is a huge accomplishment and they should be so proud of themselves even though this hurts. Have a safe night and Go Blue.
Busch, Jack, anything I can get my cheap college kid hands on
God fucking damnit.
Oberon, at least 6 of them.
edit: 6 more. I was already 3 deep.
one more disallowed goal due a quick whistle, and I honestly hope Red Berenson leaps out onto the ice and crams the ref's whistle down his esophagus.
I bought a bottle of champagne at the start of the playoffs for an unrelated event. The event got canceled, so I've saved it for tonight. I'd rather be toasting to a victory and a national title, but I'll toast to a great season and a group of guys I'm extremely proud of. Go Blue.
They just looked dead in OT, refs didnt do us no favors. Oh, and Fuck Melrose and Thorn, a chimp on meth could have called a better game
im still just...confused. i didnt think we would lose
Zero championships in sports I like watching since the year before I went to Michigan. Sorry folks, it's all my fault.
become a men's gymnastics fan. Still, I feel your pain.
This sucks. But my drink is New Holland Double Down Barley Whiskey, so it's okay. tomorrow it will suck more.
It's called "early whistle." It's made of unfairness, bias, and causes blindness.
Terrible terrible refs tonight. First a home game for the NC...AND the refs in your back pocket??? Come on...
my sixth oberon. About to hit the kettle one.
Can't ice that much in OT. Horrible shift change. Why? Why does God hate us so much?
Red needs to be sent out in style.... we must win a National Championship for that great man. SOON.
Are there any mods around who can check in on Brian?
But I do have a gallon of red. Use it mostly for cooking, but it's palatable. Time to get f'ed up.
Shots of pinnacle vodka and tears. Untill I black out.
I haven't seen that much flopping since Vlade Divac played Manu Ginobili 1-on-1. And the worst part was the refs fell for it. I thought I was watching European soccer for awhile. UMD could not stay on their skates. The refs took us out of the game. I've watched a fair amount of hockey over the years, and I can honestly say I've never seen a team get whistled for 9 penalties that didn't involve any fighting calls. I don't understand the rule on the waived off first goal. I clearly heard the whistle AFTER the puck was in the net. I guess they ruled they wanted to blow the whistle, so it's intent that counts, not the actual whistle. I guess. F the refs and the whole state of Minnesota.
Intent is what matters on that call, and it is what killed us last year as well. It doesn't help that the same conference has done this twice to us. This has also happened to the Wings on numerous occasions.
Doesn't that mean they can basically never award a goal in that situation? Unless the ref just doesn't realize that the puck is sitting in the net the whole time, he's going to "form the intent" to blow the whistle when it is under the goalie/defender. Unless the goalie gets bulldozed, I think they should make the call by the whistle, otherwise any ref who thinks about blowing means the goal is waived off.
I have never seen a case where intent has been trumped by a review. But someone else might be able to point it out.
Is hockey the only sport where "I intended to do something, but even though I didn't, it still counts"? What's the point of replay even then?
It would be like a football ref disallowing a TD pass because he meant to call "in the grasp" but just forgot to blow his whistle until after the endzone dance.
That rule has AIDS.
I'm not saying the ref fucked up, just that that's the most fucked up rule in sports.
Anything. More Specifically, 10 Molsons. God dammit
On the bright note, at least we had plenty to keep us occupied during the football offseason... and we can do simple math....
Refs didn't decide this game. I think they could have, and should have, not called a couple of the close ones on us and called a few of the close ones on them, but at the end of the day, they only scored on one of them.
The wave off, while I hate it, did not decide that game. It was early, and we still got the first goal. A garbage call, yes, but not a deciding one by any means when its early in the first knotted at 0-0.
Hate to say it, but we earned this loss. UMD outplayed us most of the night, and we got lucky a few times. On the other side, we just couldn't get anything running, and we didn't cash in on our chances. In OT, we commited mind-blowing icing calls and then let them burn us for the winning goal. I hate to lose, but we overachevied to get to this game, and we just didn't play well enough to beat a team that wanted their first title in their own state. We came close, but we just didn't get the job done.
It'll hurt for another 12 hours or so, but the way I'm used to losing big hockey games, I can deal with losing one fairly. If we'd have lost this one on a bad call, I'd have driven out east and strangled the rf who screwed it up.
UM-D definitely played a great game. Hats off to them.
I wish we'd been allowed to play a great game though.
Damn you Mr. Robot, why do you have to be so rational? I guess that's why you're Mr. Robot huh?
But if you think we lost this game fairly, I would have to disagree. Intensely.
This season was incredible. Tiny Hunwick stole UND's spot in this final, and we somehow won the CCHA and beat three WCHA teams without ever looking like a dominant powerhouse at any point this season - except for the Big Chill.
Yes the better team won tonight, and I hate to admit that. But I'm still proud of this team - they overachieved, and in a big way.
you're probably right. We had too many stretches of poor play, including much of the second period. Even with those bad stretches a win would have been awesome and perfectly reasonable in the random fun-bounce world of hockey, but sadly, UMD played better and won.
We'll always have North Dakota. And the ridiculously great goaltending of Hunwick.
This is a very good post in a time of strong emotions. +1
Some of the comments here had me wondering if I was watching the same game. Michigan played well, UMD played better. Them's the breaks.
I've decided to drink from the jug. I feel like I need to pour it into a smaller bottle and get a brown paper bag.
Just breakout the beer bong, down the red, and run through the streets.
I'm gonna go find and bulldog and go Michael Vick on its ass!
jk. but the thought did cross my mind....
Stay the fuck out of my backyard.
The fact that it crossed your mind, is sickening.
I have to write a paper that was due on Wednesday
Enough until I can't feel feelings.
I was drinking my homebrew throughout the game. Now I think it's time to break out the Johnny Walker Black.
They are gentle and supportive and awesome, evidently. Nebraska doesn't even have a mens hockey program that I'm aware of, and they still haven't officially joined the Big Ten, and here's one, giving us a post-loss back rub.
If I weren't married, I'd buy you a freakin ring.
Also, if Nebraska starts up a first rate hockey program, they've got a great conference to play in now. The more the merrier!
Its something they did to try and come together as a team. Same idea as a playoff beard. New Hampshire's team grew mustaches for the tournament. There are a hundred different things that are less lame than bleaching your hair, but I can't know them too much for it.
There are zero things that are more lame. Those dudes looked like a bunch of dirty, Civil War-era prostitutes.
The worst part is it probably just became a team tradition for all time ever.
Not much else to rally around in Minnesota.
the goal was to look like as big of tools as possible. Mission accomplished!
It's never worked out that great before...
I always thought they were more a spring people...
I mean, the Russians thought so...
id take losses to msu and osu this year in exchange for an OT goal tonight. its a national championship for the team i love
we just don't seem to have it like we've had historically. the last two games are proof of that. hopefully, some of these young guys can step up next year and beyond.
So, what's the outlook on next years team?
Haven't read the thread. Finding whatever I can and drinking til I pass out.
Only have to worry about the ref problem for two more years, then the Big Ten will be the NCAA Hockey's golden boy and we'll get more benefits of the doubt. Do not underestimate the power of the Big Ten *ominous music*
I sip Napa's forgotten varietal as I watch the sun slip behind Mayacamas and Michigan's hockey season. I toast the fact that, even in the depth of my grief, I have the wiener races at Golden Gate Fields to look forward to.
i just can't get enough bosox-yankee highlights from today during the ncaa hockey title game. and now even more. awesome.
Just bought a handle of Fleishmann's and a 2 liter of Vernors. I'll let you guess which bottle will go down quicker.
Also assorted micros if I feel like switching it up. Probably Founder's Dirty Bastard.
...I thought that it was one of the best hockey games I have watched since some of the Wings overtime playoff games from the late 90s/early 00s. Just as emotional too, that made me sad.
I lived in the U.P. for some of my childhood and saw UMD games all the time, so good on them.
Recipe for success:
1 32oz Mason jar filled w/ ice
Vodka to the top of the "Mason"
1 cap full Reallime
Fill w/carbonated water
Repeat as necessary.
Simpson quote on my mind:
Sometimes I think you WANT to fail!
This is directed at Michigan's play in overtime and the refs.
Can ANYTHING go right for me today?
I am drowning my sorrows in Johnnie Walker Black Label. The Michigan Difference?
PS: Yes I'm snob, no I cannot afford Blue.
korbel i was planning on spraying everywhere kettle one and chick fil a lemonade and 312
The worst part of it all was when they all had their helmets off in the celebration dogpile. What kind of hockey team bleaches their hair like that? I'll probably have nightmares about being naked at the bottom of said dogpile.
I can't believe we lost. Drinking so much. I just cna't believe it. I thought it was a guaranteed win. I lose.
And now I'm watching the Emperor's New Groove with my roommate.
It got worse.
Canadian Mist until I can't feel feelings
And more than likely most of it.
Great season Michigan. But Fuck some of those shitty calls, it is the National Championship game let that shit go.
Just got into an argument with another Michigan fan about how big a Michigan fan I am. He accuses me of being a bandwagon hockey fan, I say that I know more about Michigan than you'll ever know, he asks me who the 2004 NIT mvp was, I guessed and replyed Daniel Horton within 5 seconds, and he accuses me of googling it, like I knew he would.
Some people. Fucking douchers.
Send him Here. This is precisely why I wrote it.
who was the 1984 NIT mvp?
...but I'd have to go Tim McCormick.
Intra-fanbase post loss arguments are a friggin black hole. Just tell him if he wants to be the bigger fan, then fine. He can be. Just go be the bigger fan somewhere else.
Your reasonabless shows you are not a big enough Michigan fan!!11!!!!!11!! /s
If you had, imagine the jinx complex you would have had with THAT kinda loss. Now you're in the clear.
Your significant other, on the other hand, has lost her mojo. (Hockey-wise).
I'm a minor, so I guess I'll be hitting the juice boxes. If i down enough, maybe it'll have the same effect. Or maybe I'll just really have to piss. Whatever.
Now I'm drinking chardonay. It's all we got in the house.
hope the pain i have had to go through from the basketball game against duke to this is for the better. Meaning something good is comming up... SOON
My own tears. That's what I will be drinking. Then I will cry them out and drink them all over again. Rinse and repeat.
Actually, went from Oberon to Wolverine Beer when it was 2-1. Helped for a little while.
Shawn Hunwick will never buy a drink at any bar in which I am drinking. Hope the rest of his birthdays are better than this one. Dude has stones.
So true about Hunwick. If I ever meet him he will drink til he exceeds my credit limit.
We need to find a way to track him around the country and have the Alumni Association branches buy him drinks wherever he is.
I wouldn't mind some whiskey to chase it.
... I went straight intravenous.
during our near-Championship run has now come back and is hitting me in the face like a sledgehammer.
I need a kitten.
I just realized after I started drinking that I already brushed my teeth tonight.
Can you not brush again after you get trashed?
After he vomits.
I just fucking agree.
For what its worth, Sllapshot and cheap tequila (I started chasing with beer instead of lime, my roomate is using potato chips) is close to the only thing that borderline salvages this night
Only because I did this while drinking, I just friended Shawn Hunwuick on facebook. Kid needs to know he's loved? No?
blames Hunwick. Dude is friggin superman.
I saw him when he came in last year for the ND game. From that point I absolutely loved the kid. He plays with intensity. I loved watching him get into scuffs with UMD players tonight. For such a small kid, he's got balls. And he's not afriad to whip 'em out.
For F**K sake, without him we wouldn't have even been playing today. God love that tiny little goalie.
For what it's worth, I am blaming Barry Melrose. I just want another reason to hate his stupid freaking hair.
Where he got us there, so don't complain, but he didn't have his best game. He wasn't the problem at all. Were ANY of the goals bad goals tonight? Maybe on our defense on one or two of them, but not on him.
I'm slightly buzzed but started a group for him. Join and show support.
Edit: changed link to a page instead of a group. no need for me to moderate this.
I couldn't wait for this game to come, I wanted this weekend to go fast. I was so ready for us to win, now this weekend completely sucks and tomorrow's sunday which always has the tomorrow's monday feeling and I also have to do a project that I haven't even started yet. It seems like every time I don't except us to win we do and I whenever I expect it we don't. Fuck this i'd love for someone to bring me some alcohol right now.
If not, Zeiler's is open until like 3 AM on Saturdays.
If my parents hadn't just got home I probably would have gone down there.
edit: probably would have had someone go there for me. seriously. this sucks ass.
a metric butload of cheese covered bread? Heavy food will have a similar effect.
now that you mention it I am quite hungry. I'll try it.
I'm 22 and three weeks from being on my own and living off my own income and I still steal my parents liquor after they go to bed during school breaks. Don't be above trying that.
did we run sprints before the OT? no legs. Since this is a bitch post, too: Winnett was dragging hard on the last shift, pretty much standing straight up while skating and then got beat. I'm sure it had to do with all the icing, but damn.
I really thought we would win this game wasn't prepared for this. what am I drinking? STELLAAAAAAAAAA!
Some Jim Beam and Coke and an umbrella of furry.
But an umbrella of furry is a new one on me.
Sorry for double post
terrible, but delicious combo...
Drink of choice: Nyquil (I've had the flu for a few days now)
Honestly though, while the quick whistle pissed me off I knew it was coming before the puck even went in the net, and it wasn't as bad as the Miami call where it was obvious to anyone with eyes that the puck was loose and not under the goalie. I lost sight of the puck on this one and we had a somewhat similar angle as the ref, so I was waiting for the whistle. And UMD outplayed us for about 16 minutes of the second, a fair bit of the 3rd, and was in general causing much more havoc in our end than we were in theirs all night, and while a couple of the penalties on our guys were pure BS many of them were caused by UMD simply being faster to the puck and getting after it. I can't say we deserved to lose as our guys played hard, but I do have to say UMD is a deserving champ.
Even though this sucks. My wife went to Butler so we are 0-for-2 on national championship games this week. So far this year I've watched the Bears lose at home to the Packers in the NFC Championship, and now two national championship game losses. I half expect the Hawks to get housed tomorrow while the Stars win in regulation to knock the Hawks out of the playoffs, followed by a too-early exit for the Bulls, and half the Sox lineup to hit the DL by July. Blerg.
Is wine is wine is wine.....
I'm drinking a little of everything. Right now I'm on Kahluha and coffee. I'll switch to vodka or gin in a bit.
Jungle juice, some beer and moon shine. Keep it classy my people.
Welcome to the Greatest Blog in the Land. Don't take it personally when some of the curmudgeons around here are mean...you'll learn to love 'em. I promise.
So, this is me venting/commiserating. We lost, and it was awful. I was wearing a Michigan necktie, and poas
fuck it- too drunk and too pissed. I'll try tomorrow. FML. trying to read this with one eye. sigh. tough to swallow, this.
