What are the first few days of practice like for a new coaching staff?

Submitted by taistreetsmyhero on

Does anyone know how new coaching staffs generally approach the first few days that they have access to their whole team? Do they immediately try to implement their own drills, etc.? How long does it take for coaches to get an inkling of who are the top performers? Any other insights people (especially current MgoCoaches) may have?

Insight about this staff, but I read an article some years back about Urban Meyers first day at Florida.  He called a team meeting at the gym all players had to report. I think it was midnight time frame. He had his coaches locked the gym doors. He had the team do wind sprints until people asked to leave. If you left you would get transfer papers.

I played HS football in Michigan and at the time there was a no cut rule, but my head coach would weed out the pretenders by making the team run with the cross country team.

I suppose that there will be some variation of that trimming the fat process involved.

Would the players have playbooks in hand already, or does that come after first practice when the coaches have done some drills and explained philosophies?

Since these guys are all playing college ball at the P5 level, they've played for a long time and have been to many camps and ran through more drills than most. They won't be overwhelmed by much. The only thing that may be different is the attitude they'll need to bring to the table. Terrell Revis talked about the first time he practiced with Tom Brady. He couldn't believe the intensity. My guess is the players will be shocked by JH's attitude toward practice. They won't be in over their heads, but they will need to adjust quickly. I bet most will like it because it's easy when you believe in the one pushing you. Much like Revis with Brady. Brady has the rings so it was easy for him to be inspired by Brady.

to see which ones exhibit real leadership. First, showing Harbaugh that they can take everything he can throw at them. Do it with enthusiasm. Run through every sprint, keep adding weights and reps, getting there early and staying on the field late.

Then, leading their teammates. First, by example, then by vocal encouragement. Real key for QBs, but really all position groups. How do you push your group to excel?

This is what we bought with Harbaugh and I can't friggin' wait for the results.

I have heard from a couple guys they really like it. They have been working for over a month and some say they feel noticably stronger using different techniques.

This may be true BUT it seems like whenever there is a new strength guy like Barwis everyone thinks they are stronger and sometimes it is hard to see long term result quite frankly.

Anyway everyone seems positive. We have it good : )
