West Virginia still obsessed with our coach

Submitted by Jinxed on

So I was browsing google trends this morning, and out of curiosity, decided to see the trend for "Rich Rodriguez" over the last month and found something surprising.

http://www.google.com/trends?q=rich+rodriguez&ctab=0&geo=us&geor=all&da…

the sheer number of search queries for Rich Rodriguez coming out of West Virginia over the last year is simply staggering. Morgantown does more searches on the subject than Ann Arbor, and West Virginia searches overall almost double Michigan's..

Another interesting snippet is that Columbus, OH and several other Ohio cities break the top 10 while if you search sweatervest's name.. Ann Arbor doesn't make the top 10 list..

Yet another interesting point is that East Lansing doesn't make the list. We don't make their list either..

Another funny one is when you search for the "university of Michigan" trend..

They're clearly obsessed with us in East Lansing and Notre Dame.. we don't make their top 10...

So my brother in law is a huge West Virginia fan (the non-alumnus West Virginia kind). My sister (who went to Pitt ironically) tells me he and his buddies like to watch our games and root for us to loose. Then they sit around yelling "So how do they like him now!" and laughing.

IMO, they would care so much if they didn't want him back.

in 40 Year Old Virgin when the guy is obsessing over his ex-girlfriend and all of his friends think she is teasing and torturing him, and then Seth Rogan's character confronts her and says "leave my friend alone" and the ex-girlfriend says "He's a freakin' stalker we broke up like 2 years ago and he won't leave me alone..." and Seth Rogan, surprised by this says "I did not know that..." and we realize the creepy stalker is actually the former boyfriend not the ex-girlfriend. Of course Rich Rodriguez is the ex-girlfriend and WVU fans are the creepy ex-boyfriend.

WVU Fan: We had this coach for seven years and it was the greatest greatest thing in my life. Until he went up to this school in Michigan, I think. And, you know, instead of, like, saying, "Okay, what am I doing that caused this behavior?" I dumped him. Stupid decision. I spent the last two years of my life regretting it.
Rosenbergr: Well, why don't you get him back right now?
WVU Fan: Oh, cause he's coaching this other team. Stupid, horrible decision. But, hey, that's his journey, you know. I gotta respect that. He wants to be some immature little bitch and leave everybody in West Virginia behind, that's... that's love, man.
Rosenbergr: It sounds horrible.
WVU Fan: Of course it's horrible. It's suffering and it's pain and it's... You know, you lose weight and then you put back on weight, and then you, you know, you call them a bunch of times and you try and email, and then they move or they change their email, but that's just love.

How many comments will this thread need for a Morgantown google search of "Rich Rodriguez" to bring up this thread of us obsessing over Morgantown's obsession with RR?

I live about 10 minutes south of Morgantown and I hear it every day how much they love to root against him now. One of the most popular t-shirts sold here has the phrase, "I root for WVU and anybody that plays against Michigan." I once went to my Doctor for a check up wearing one of my (many) Michigan shirts. He said I had a health problem. When I inquired as to what my aliment was, he said it was my Michigan shirt. He offered to pay me to take it off. I told him he could pound sand up his a** and if he wanted to become a better Dr then go to Michigan and get something that actually looks good on his wall.

It happened less than a month ago, right before Christmas. I'm a big Michigan fan and have been since 1976. I am not going to stop wearing anything Michigan just because Rich Rod left WVU for Michigan. That includes trips to Morgantown. I proudly wear my block "M" hat and my block "M" fleece (that I got from MDen!). It has caused some death stares my way but I figure it is still a free country. If the people in West Virginia can not get past the fact that he left, then that is their problem. Not mine. I was a Michigan fan well before he got there and I will be a fan well after he leaves or retires.

All I can say is that I didn't know there were people out there who are as obnoxious as I am in their fandom. I would've told the doctor the same exact thing. God bless you. I cannot stand someone talking shit about U of M, and when they do so on a non-factual basis (such as a recent Sparty alum I was dating stating that U of M and MSU had the same admissions criteria- this led me to immediately open up the ol' internet and prove her wrong via U.S. News & World Report. We don't date anymore) I have to correct them.

Pride never takes a day off. Which is why I proudly wear Michigan gear the day after a loss. It's painful, but it's principle.

At least WVA fans have a connection here.

We seem to be uber obsessed with Kiffin and USC over here, based on the threads started and the holier than thou post on the main page. And, we have no personal connection to either.

In a way, we're throwing stones from a glass house in this thread.

I'm not sure that's fair. There is nothing else going on in college football right now. This is big news in the college football world. What else do you want us to talk about? More about factions? More about how long RR has? We have talked about those things a lot.

Yeah.. Umm.. This is a college football fans forum..

Go over to the trends website and Michigan searches for USC and Kiffin arent even a blip on the radar..

Next time you decide to be a total debbie downer, at least come with a valid point

like I've said before...

It's been how long after the fact that RR has been at UM? I still get cussed on a regular basis by WV inbreeds because RR "sold his soul". I just think they're all made because Gomer Pyle (Stewart) is still around...

I was visiting family in West Virginia this summer. We usually just don't talk about RR, so I didn't really think about the fact I was wearing my Michigan cap when we went to the Tri-County Fair. I've never had so many people try to start fights with me in my life. Every drunk within a 90 mile radius was there.

The hat stayed on.
