West Michigan Tornado Warning

Submitted by The Fugitive on

My fellow West Michiganders,

How's it going? Everyone OK? Power Outages?

Apparently there is a rain shaft tornado which basically means it can't be seen but is in fact a tornado.

Gotta get Dorothy out and chase this sucker down!

I'm in the basement, just rain at my house in GR as far as I can tell.

Folks are farther north and east so we are listening to radio reports because that's where the storm is now.

In the basement here in Alger Heights.  Nothing but rain and a little wind here, but not overly far from where some scary stuff happened in Wyoming (was watching Wood TV when someone described seeing the tornado cross 28th St. at Clyde Park).

Battle Creek area kinda. Live in the boonies. Not even raining now. Light showers all day. That's about it.

Those north of me, take cover, take care, be safe.

Women and children first (only kinda joking).

I just got off the phone with my mom (3 mile and the Beltline) and she said it was as bad as they've seen it in years at least.  They are all downstairs.

EDIT: They're all good now though.

This tornado was all wrapped up in rain but dual pole radar showed low correlation coefficients, which is an indication that debris was lofted by this rain-wrapped twister!

This will put an early end to the Dream Cruise. The rain should be hitting Woodward within the hour, causing the obnoxious pricks to pack up their "do not touch my mediocre car that really isn't a classic" signs and head back to Gaylord.

it's amazing the damage toll wasn't worse.  That was an Oklahoma-type storm, and the twister went rIght through the heart of a (relatively) big city's downtown.

The Kalamazoo tornado "only" rated a F3.  I'm pretty sure that it has been 40+ years now since the last F4 or worse tornado in Michigan.  That would have been March 20, 1976 --- an F4 that hit West Bloomfield.  Went through the 15 Mile & Orchard Lake intersection.

good to know this. I'm in VA but my sister's family is near beltline and 4th in GR. she said they're ok, but it's kinda freaky when they name your neighborhood and say they usually see this type of radar in Oklahoma. anyone have an idea of where this is heading? my parents are in Flint too.

What's left of that system is headed towards us in Metro Detroit, although it looks like it is dissipating somewhat on NWS radar. We should have some rain in the next 30 minutes or so here in Romulus, but one thing that did happen here is that it got quite breezy in the last hour or so.

I was out in Stevensville yesterday and got caught in a hellacious rain around noon. Delayed my trip back to Wayne County at least an hour - didn't feel comfortable driving at all in that.

Hope everyone out on that side of the great state of Michigan is OK.

that was one helluva downpour. I had nearly 3" of rain at home in about 1 1/2 hours, bringing my total there to over 10" since last Friday night. Sump pump is holding its own so far, though. Best of all, though, the rainstorm contained only a little bit of lightning and wind at that point before intensifying as it headed NE and towards GR. Family at a wedding reception in GR area told me last night how bad it was; a nephew living near Greenville couldn't make it to the reception because trees were down both directions from his home blocking the road and bringing down power lines.

I was in The Winchester on the east side of GR when the sirens went off.  They made us go to their basement but kept serving drinks.  Now that's what I call great service.
