Yeah, he's signed. He just didn't sign a full-on ELC to protect him from expansion draft eligibility should it happen in 2018. The rule there is that if a player is in his third "pro" season that summer, he has to be protected. By finishing the season on an "amateur" tryout contract with the AHL team, he can play the rest of the AHL slate without being considered "pro" this season at all, thus meaning Columbus doesn't have to use a "protection" spot on him in an expansion draft.

It's all semantic contract wrangling. He's done at UofM.

There is not sorta about it. He signed and will no longer be a member of the Michigan men's ice hockey team.

Yes, I fixed the title. For some reason, without initially realizing that the expansion draft protection was the reason for the ATO, I wondered if he would maintain his eligibility. Now that it's clear he's not coming back, I changed it.

No surprise here and really no reason to be upset. I think he needs work to make the NHL full time, but at this point that work needs to happen at a higher level. Glad he stayed and glad he contributed. He turned down a chance at a Memorial Cup run in London to be a Wolverine for a full second season; he will always be a Michigan man in my book.

I'm not necessarily talking about his skating, though I know what you mean.  More that there's no panic with the puck.  He effortlessly moves through traffic.  He's always jumping in the rush.  Just signs that he's moving faster than the game - mentally.  If this were a video game, he should bump up the difficulty.

He's just smooth all around. His pick handling ability was great last year as a 17 year old. Of course he could use a little improvement here and there but he's going to be a solid defenseman.

Glad we got two years out of Werenski. I expected him to be one and done, but to get two is and was great, especially considering all of the rumors in the offseason that he was going to flee. He helped Michigan get back to the tournament and I think that we can all be grateful for that. The timing of this is probably right for Michigan too considering the scholarship logjam, though he was already expected to be attrition.

Not surprising. Top-10 picks don't last very long in college. Thanks for the memories, Zach.

GWG in the B1G Tournament this year.

Luke Martin might be Werenski 2.0

up until the point when the contract is offered, then I'm outta here.

Red's lucky that Brendan Morrison stuck around as long as he did.

He and Connor impress me as guys who can contribute right away in the NHL.  My loathing of OSU carries over to the Blue Jackets though. May Larkin and Luke G. skate by him on the way to scoring goals for the Wings.

Am I kind of alone in that I think he's nowhere near ready?  Way too inconsistent in his own end for me to think he should be near the NHL yet.  There are nights when he looks super calm and in control and other nights he panics and is out of position frequently.

Elite offensive defenseman already though.
