for this to happen. More of a stunt than anything. Suprised DB didn't thik of it first.

We're about to lose the attendance record
Great AD, but innovation isn't his strong suit.
This strikes me as a gimmick that would only fly in the South. Tennessee is the heart of NASCAR country. Michigan, not so much. Also, the only major racing venue in Michigan is MIS, and it actually seats fewer people than Michigan Stadium.
and what makes us unique. Clueless about both. But, he is excellent at rasing money and did make a good football coach hire.
Tennessee can't sell out Neyland anymore. How are they selling 150K tickets for a game in the middle of nowhere?
Well it's only like 1.5 hours from Knoxville, is in the middle of a huge UT stronghold, and it's not just UT. It's VT as well which is also huge in SW Virginia and travels very well. I live very close to Bristol actually. Have driven my car on the speedway track. I would go except that I have no interest in helping bastardized records be formed.
Yeah, but it's also two more hours away from the population centers. It's a hike to Blacksburg from coastal Virginia and even further to Bristol. I can't imagine selling 150K tickets at $80 per ticket to that game. Bristol is a long way from the population centers that hold those fan bases and you can't really fly into there. It's also not a place you vacation.
I'm guessing the tickets will be more in the $40 range with lots of money and effort going into promoting it as well.
from my experience ticket prices for these "event" type games are significantly elevated
I don't see this game having a big secondary market especially if both teams are not in the top 15.
Bristol is 1.5 hours from Knoxville and about the same from Blacksburg. Each year the two Bristol races sell 100K plus easily. It is the regions Super Bowl. Trust me, they will sell all those tickets. It is a great idea and look for it to become a semi-regular event.
Where are you at? We moved from Detroit when I was five and settled in the area. I camped at VT my senior year (90) and ended up playing ball at Emory & Henry. I live in Tampa now, however, we purchased 18 acres between Abingdon and Damascus right off the Creeper Trail. Are you close to there? Personally I think the game would great and would definitely draw over 120K.
They won't tell anyone there's a football game. They'll just advertise that it's going to be a NASCAR race.
Lose the attendance record because a game is played in a place that's not even a sports arena? Fine, whatever.
Secondly, this is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. You won't even be able to see any of the players!
You'd be surprised. It's only a half mile oval with a steep banked track raising the seated areas. Sightlines might be better than the Silverdome was.
Guys, we never had the attendance record; Notre Dame played USC in front of 123,000 people in 1929 at Soldier Field (link: http://www.chicagobears.com/tradition/soldier-field-history/historical-timeline.html) There were only 90k people at the Cowboy Classic (link: http://www.rolltide.com/sports/m-footbl/recaps/090212aad.html), and Michigan Stadium doesn't hold 120,000 people...what am I missing here?
I believe we hold the record for an actual football stadium or something. Back then Soldier Field was used for much more than just football.
Very interesting. . . but without being too obvious here, isn't EVERY stadium used for something other than football at times? Michigan Stadium sure as heck is- weddings, graduations, ceremony honoring Bo Schembechler, spring (football, yes) game. .. IMO, that's an incredibly specious argument that the fact that the most people, ever, in one place to watch college football at one time "doesn't count." Frankly, I think any non-Michigan fan would roll their eyes if you tried to make that distinction; I know I don't see it as valid.
I'm saying the primary use of Michigan Stadium is football. Soldier Field back then was used for all sorts of things. They condensed it before the Chicago Bears moved in in the 70s.
Gimmicky nhl hockey game attendance record games in your list of Michigan stadium uses.
It's an NCAA record, at least according to Wiki. I guess the ND-USC game was not an NCAA event.
That's it- that's why. The NCAA hadn't been formed yet. So yes, we have the NCAA record, but not the college football record.
NCAA was formed in about 1905. The reason Notre Dame-USC doesn't have the record is because there is no verifiable way to confirm the 123,000, whereas Michigan has had the NCAA to confirm the records.
No way the sightlines are better than the Silverdome. I think you are underestimating how far away the field will be. Here is a photo from a Redskins/Eagles game played there in 1961. The sightlines from the endzones will be god awful.
Does the Bristol Speedway even have a Jumbotron?
I believe the game experience will be downright awful due to being miles away from the field...and any general admission ground level would be same unless one is 6' 10" or above.
I believe the parking situation will be wonderful as well as the days of pre- and post- game parties!!
Son of a bitch. I officially hate both teams now. Maybe if they crater bad enough on the next few years, no one will show up.
It's sad it has come to this. But there is only one thing left. Win the whole, fuckin' thing.
Indy (capacity 257,325)
...damn right.
Is that just those seats? We can add more on the ground right? No need to waste space in the center
no problem getting 300,000 people to come watch a Michigan/Indiana night game.
We'll still have records 2-∞
2-∞ and beyond?
this is the worst idea ever. 9/10ths of the fans won't notice the difference between halftime and game action.
That's what I was thinking. What a horrible place to watch a game for most of the fans. Ford Field for basketball wasn't good, but in that case only half the fans had a crummy view.
Michigan will have a game on the moon this century. Anyone with a telescope and a ticket will be able to watch.
DB will only let you use telescopes purchased thru the AD.
I think this has been floated around for a long time, but I believe that the track owner - at some point in the recent past - offered each team something like $15-$20 million EACH to play this game there. It might have even gone as far as a fairly organized plan to remove the garages and basically level the infield temporarily in order to accommodate the field.
They have been trying to make this happen for YEARS.
The seats would be terrible for football, but watching Denard run around the track every minute would be fun.
Fucking students fault
My God. Just show up for games on time and STFU. Actually, don't STFU, cheer --- loud!
I mean, why not just hold the game on the national mall and claim everyone in DC is attending the game?
This is officially dumb.
If Larry Ellison throws his weight behind this, they could have the game on San Francisco Bay - a la America's Cup!
The world's first college football game on water.
Seriously, they can hoot and holler about "We got dat attendance record ya'll!" but will anyone be able to tell you what happened in the game? Nyet
Also, if both teams continue to be 6-6 type outfits, will anyone care?
"We're here live in front 150,000 fans and 20,000 TV viewers...."
Some one will make that happen.
Given the shear number of beer coolers that litter the stands at such events, this whole thing could break Ohio's "cooler pooper" record at the same time.
likely to cede without a protracted fight.
I don't understand how some of you are calling this a bastardized record, when we brag about The Big Chill setting the record for a hockey game despite rhe fact that I'm pretty sure The Big House isn't a hockey venue. we should respect the record for what it is (unless of course there are like 30,000 empty seats, in which case that would be kind of pathetic)
It's not that it's a venue for a different sport, it's that it's a totally implausible venue to watch the game at all. The only reason they have so many seats at Bristol is that the grandstands are a mile long. That works when you're watching 200 mph cars but is ludicrous for football.
They may have 150k in the stands, but they aren't really "attending the game"
Couldn't one argue that seeing the football at Bristol = seeing the hockey puck at the big house?
Not even close to the same magnitude.
Look how small the cars look. Now imagine trying to find a football down there.
Pictures always, but always, make things look further away than they are, especially in a stadium.
True, and the photo got squished a bit when it went into the thread.
Even then, the numbers posted below help put the distances in perspective. But maybe the front row seats being so elevated above the field will help sight lines a bit? I don't know, I just don't forsee it working super well.
Bristol is a bowl. It looks like a football stadium only bigger. Some fans will certainly be a long way from the action but the difference between the worst seat at Bristol and the worst seat at Michigan Stadium is much smaller than the difference between the worst seat at Joe Louis Arena and Michigan Stadium.
The only reason they have so many seats at Bristol is that the grandstands are a mile long.
You're probably doing a little exaggeration on purpose, but Bristol's a 1/2 mile oval, and of course the straights are not a full quarter-mile each. Using Google Earth it's about 360 yards from the far edge of one semi-circle turn (on the track) to the other.
Can you see pretty well from one end-zone seat to the other end zone at the Big House? I mean, not awesome, but people seem to fill those seats up regardless. Then you should be able to see alright at the (much more grandly sloped) Bristol. Most people would be seated on the sides anyway. Don't get the idea that Bristol is anything like a typical racetrack. It's a racetrack inside a large stadium, not one with grandstands scattered around the edges. As others have said, hockey : Big House :: football : Bristol. Very logical comparison.
And people will come. These are two of the yee-hawinest fanbases in the country, you think they'll pass up the chance to see a spectacle like that? Michigan's record could be safe not because of the venue, but because there's a better-than-fair chance that those two teams will be horrible by then. Tennessee has been spinning its wheels for years and VT is gradually crumbling at the seams (seen their offense lately?) By 2016 it's not inconceivable these could be two pissed-off fanbases coming off non-bowl seasons.
I'm not a NSCAR fan so I didn't realize Bristol was that "small". Mea culpa.
Yeah, not the same. The Big Chill is Michigan's hockey team playing at another Michigan sport venue. It's still a college game played on a college campus just in the stadium instead of the ice rink. No different than the lacrosse team playing at the Big House.
This, OTOH, is just ridiculous. I'm not trying the claim the record won't "count" or anything, just that it's a stupid idea. The Big Chill is an event that has happened multiple times, and has been copied by NHL teams every year. They do it because there are that many people that want to go watch an outdoor hockey game, not just to break a record. I can't imagine VT or UT fans really want to watch their teams like this.
The game takes place in a wall-less field dubed "Open Earth Stadium." Stephen Ross purchases all the admissions for a penny a each and "donates" them to the global population population.
Boom!
Offical attendance over 7 billion, the game makes 70 million plus at the "gate," and the band still isn't invited as a cost-savings measure.
You raise a good point. I'd been thinking GA but I'm sure they'll figure out some way to sock the richer European countries with liscensing fees.
A few other points:
We can't play Michigan State because a Spartan riot would have global ramifications.
All living recruits from all classes will be on unofficial visits (so we better win).
If we lose it will be the students' fault.
Intrigued by your ideas. Do you have a newsletter?
Used to be the E3W with Brian...sigh...oh yes...the glory days.
Ah, technically they'll be on official visits since Ross paid for their attendance. Which may be tricky in the legal department.
Great either violations come out of this or they look at all the money and try to annex us to the SEC. I blame the students.
Easy solution: use censuses and some UN data to find out how many high school age kids are in the world and pay for that out of the AD's pocket. Then at the end of the year turn in to the NCAA any school that thought it was paying for someone's fifth official visit.
I like the concept, and if you subscribe to the idea that we are being watched by the alien beings that created us, then we can have the intergalactic record as well!
Michigan and ND play their next game in the Grand Canyon.
M vs OSU on a giant blimp parked above Manhattan. Entire city in attendance.
They better hope both teams are any good by then or there's no way they'll sell out.
Not to nit pick, but I think the title is a little misleading. We're still 3 years from losing the record....title makes it seem like its gonna happen this weekend.
That's gonna be 150-160k worth of people watching shitty football.
Good. I also hope someone builds a bigger stadium than ours.
Uh, why?
Good, I hope the world gets exploded.
Hell with it. We need to go play here now.
First time seeing that stadium. That's insane.
As someone of Czech heritage I would love to visit my ancestral homeland and watch some Michigan football at the same time.
Since I know Dave Brandon is reading this comment; make it happen.
They'll have to tear down the video board in the center
I've never been to a motor speedway (I'd like to actually, despite all the hate car racing gets) but I've seen pictures and have seen races from there on TV. Man, Bristol really is a short track and this picture really emphasizes how small a track it really is. I'm trying to picture 40 cars driving at the same time on that and I'm struggling.
Edit: I think I look a bit dumb with the above. I think my perception of that track was way off. It's definitely a small track but I was off especially with how small the cars would actually be/seem in that picture,
Yeah....occasionally this happens:
What is this? A football game for ants?
Zoolander never fails. Ever.
It will be a nice footnote to their 3-9 seasons.
Who wouldn't want to drive way out of their way to sit over 100 yards from the field to watch the vols lose squinting through binoculars?
The view is going to be horrendous. From front row to front row, it's roughly 600ft wide at its smallest. With a field that is 160ft wide, the closest you'd be to the sideline would be 220ft, assuming they center the field and you're sitting in the front row.
"End zone" seating would obviously be worse. Bristol is 1150ft wide at its widest. 360ft long field. Front row seats would be 395 ft from the back of the endzone. It's like watching a Tiger's game from the outfield but instead of batters hitting the ball towards you, they'll be swinging the opposite way.
Wow - so that would mean that the front row would be exactly 100 yards from the center of the field - the part that is right in front of you. So for the best seats in the house, the closest the play ever is to you is still nearly the length of a football field away.
And just for some more perspective, the top row at the Big House is roughly 215 ft from the nearest sideline. Top row at Bristol would be 500 ft away from the closest sideline.
More this is looking like a stupid idea won't b able to see anything
If they want people to actually see the game, they can put up a wall of massive TV screens all around the oval and set another record.
Also, best obstructed views EVAR.
I doubt they will get 120000 fans to go to the game. Really depends on the ticket prices
Michigan State was always rumored to be going hard after a game like this at MIS about 5-10 years ago, if memory serves. Seemed to come up just about every year.
Honestly, this record doesn't mean much. Let 'em do it.
I'm surprised they didn't get it done at least with another team. Oregon is known for their ugly/crazy uniform circus they have yearly, and sparty is known for gimmick games. It's become their identity now. And yet, people still don't care.
insert any southern joke you want here. I've never met so many......unaware to be nice fans of a team the Va Tech fans here in VA. they will travel to apart of a gimmick. Tennessee speaks for itself, they suck and fill seats still.
People will come for the gimmick, just to say they were there. They would never go back a second time.
It might beat the record, but that will be a god-awful place to watch a football game. With how far away the field will be from the stands, no one will be able to see anything. Especially if you're sitting in the "endzone" seats.
Still, if they want to do, let them have at it. The record was bound to be broken eventually. I could see by 2020 that Texas, not wanting to be outdone, schedules a game with Bama to be played at Tiananmen Square, with a world record crowd of 500,000 spectators.
This thread is bringing out some great posts. I don't know if I enjoyed this or the wheel route joke more.
If you have to go off campus to set some type of record, you are admitting that you are losing the attendance battle for largest stadium capacity in college football. The truth simply remains, by objective standards that more people have watched Michigan football on television, in person and historcially since the onset of college football. These facts can all be verified by the College Football Warehouse, and while promotions are good for college football, trying to "Keep up with the Joneses'" is not necessarily a good thing. ^Take Neyland Stadium, for instance. TN is traditionally one of the top ten programs in the country; tenth to be exact. But the look of their stadium in their race to displace Michigan as the largest stadium in the U.S., makes it look like a collection of lean-tos. This is evidenced immediately upon viewing. The vision of Yost and his incredible mind to even verbalize in the 30s that "one day there will be a collection of highways running throughout this state and country that will allow people to come to what now is knowm for acre upon acre of cornfields to watch college football probably seems imaginable even to you," addressing the reporter questioning him about the size and pre-design for future expansion, is just one of the many things separating Michigan from the norm. It is not that we are better, moreso, I think, that we were blessed with people who imagined things far greater than what they were now seeing. ^ I will be completely honest with many of you on this site. As I sat in Vietnam, fortunate enough to have taken high school typing because I was a hound, I never imagined my job, then known as simply as clerk-typist, would someday be replaced with the job title systems automated clerk. And then later with that damn invention of Al Gore's - yeah right - we were the first, in the federal government, because it was designed by the DOD to daily use the www. About a year later, after introduced to every one in the world, I would go home and my son, then a junior high student would teach me things I would never have thought of simply because he was raised in the computer generation that 90% of you belong to. Relevancy is everything, and when you show me a man that will allow 115,000 to be able to watch, not just attend a football game, and did so in the 20s of the last century, while allowing for upwards of 15,000 more my curiosity and respect might be piqued. Inasmuch as there is no other being, further needn't be said.
When you finally figure out a paragraph break this blog is going to have one hell of a party
When the WR's run routes, will they only make left turns?
shut it down
Another shining example of the need for the return of the pos bang. Well done.
Yes, but the RB's will also run wheel routes.
In all honesty this seems like a lame game to watch.
Wish I could see the future like you. You know the game is in 2016 right? Go check out Tennessee's recruiting class and tell me we're not on the way back.
If Michigan had thought of this you guys would be saying its the greatest idea ever.
And also there were about 103,000 in Neyland this weekend. Some of you uninformed posters just say things to say them whether they're true or not.
I think Butch Jones is a good coach, but way too early to predict how good Tennessee will be in 3 years. Butch Jones took over a bigger mess than Brady Hoke did, and we are still feeling the effects 3 years later even with top 5 recruiting classes the last 2 years. Butch Jones has Tennessee pointed in the right direction, but I have my doubts Tennessee will be a top 10 team 3 years from now.
And a bigger problem for Tennessee is that Florida, Georgia, and Alabama haven't dropped off at all. It may take time to get back at a level to compete with those programs.
As for the game at Bristol, I think it is a unique idea that may make for a cool one time experience. Most Michigan fans can relate to this after having a similar event with an outdoor hockey game played in Michigan Stadium. But I think the overall football experience is going to be worse than most fans realize. The sight lines are going to be terrible. Just one man's opinion. Are there even Jumbotrons at Bristol?
we never really had the record if crowd estimates from the early 20th centurty are accurate where several games, mostly involving the armed forces or Notre Dame or both, drew 120,000+ crowds.
Bristol is going to be awful as a football stadium.
Big deal . . . we'll still have the largest crowd in an actual football stadium. (But what is the deal with Tennessee and their obsession with surpassing us?)
I'll be hugely surprised if this is anything more than a rumor. It's been going around for at least twenty years. It always comes down to the fact that neither team is willing to give up a home game. If I had a dime for each time I heard this would happen I'd be able to retire wealthy. Don't believe it until contracts are signed. It comes up again every two years or so as absolute fact and never ever happens !!!!
1/4 mil 2020 chickens vs u of m. Michigan motor speedway. Folding chairs everywhere and hordes of people peeing standing up.
Wouldn't really bother me. It means more to say we have the biggest stadium. Everyone hears about that every Saturday. Largest football crowd ever is something you only hear about if you're a 4th grader and bought the Guinness Book of World Records through your monthly book order.
behind the piles of money they only care about(some being distributed back to players).
http://www.pittalks.com/2013/03/12/the-forgotten-game-bristol-motor-speedway/
Billy Ray Barnes who played in that 1961 NFL preseason game said, “The crowd was good, but it felt like a practice. The stands were so far away from the field it was hard to get into it. We couldn’t even hear the fans cheering until we were leaving the game.”
Shows how ridiculous the idea is. It looks like you could fit about four more football fields in around the football field. The nearest seats would be basically an entire football field away from the action!
they're having a race. The normal morbid desire to see a crash will be heightened by the possibility of seeing a spinning, out of control Jeff Gordon take out half of Tennessee's team in the infield.
Might make them a better team.
Tennessee is determined to get us back for the Woodson Heisman, even if it kills them. Or blinds their fans.
We'd have the *record still.
* - highest attendance for a game people actually cared about
Part of me is like awh, man. Then i console myself with the fact it's not in a football stadium. Put an asterisk on it.
Now it your time. Now is the time you say F**k it and blow the damn world away. It's time to truely conquer space. 350,000+ person stadium placed in orbit around the earth. Sure, things like "Gravity" might matter, but damnit man, you have engineers paying YOU!
So the new attendance record for a college football game, will be at a race track. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
That still doesn't change the fact that we do and always will have the largest football stadium.
The sight lines are just going to be terrible. I don't think people realize how small a football field is compared to the infield of the track.
Neyland Stadium @Neyland_Stadium
Neyland Stadium compared to Bristol Motor Speedway. pic.twitter.com/i7HfZGKPZs
is reduce the seat size at the Big House in half, allow only really skinny people in (waist less than a 22) we could have easily 175,000. Plus the additional revenue generated in seat licenses and ticket sales would greatly help our financially strapped institution.
We are Michigan fergodsakes!!!!
