Weis attacks Carroll's morals

From EDBS's twitter: Charlie Weis dumps the bilge water early on the way out to sea: http://sbnation.com/e/951664

From the Link:

Q: Is it frustrating to you Pete Carroll, for example, portrayed in one way…
CW: Let me ask you this question: You guys know about things that go on in different places. Was I living with a grad student in Malibu, or was I living with my wife in my house? You could bet that if I were living with a grad student here in South Bend, it would be national news. He’s doing it in Malibu and it’s not national news. What’s the difference? I don’t understand. Why is it okay for one guy to do things like that, but for me, I’m scrutinized when I swear. I’m sorry for swearing; absolve my sins.

Seriously, Charlie: WTF? how did this turn into a "pete carroll sleeps with a grad student question? This man is unbelievable.

I volunteer

to sleep with a grad student.

For science. And love.

And it can be national news for all I care.

EDIT: I'm such a hopeless romantic.

Weiss had grad assistants

Weiss had grad assistants that offered him a piece of their pie. How elated he was to find out he had his choice of blueberry, pumpkin and apple.

1a. Charlie, it's not news

1a. Charlie, it's not news in Los Angeles because Pete Carroll isn't the only guy in town making $4 million a year. Why pay attention to Carroll when the city is full of movie stars?

1b. Likewise, you're the only game in South Bend, Chaz. There's a lot less to talk about there, if you haven't noticed.

2. Carroll's free to date all the grad students he wants, there's nothing unethical about it (I'm assuming, given the situation that Weis describes, that he's separated from his wife to begin with). All Weis is doing is dragging this girl into the spotlight.

3. From my quick Googling, it looks like Carroll makes a concerted effort to keep his private life private. There's very little out there on his wife and almost nothing on the girlfriend, as far as I can see.

What a weird fellow that Weis

What a weird fellow that Weis guy turned out to be. For someone who wrote a book about "no excuses," he certainly like to play the sympathy card. Charlie, if you are at a Catholic university (from which you graduated), guess what, there will be higher standards. Sorry you didn't get that grad student you wanted.

No, no, she'd simply have to ride the whale.

There are pills to deal with the consequent sea sickness. And a lights-out policy takes care of the visually-induced nausea.

Charlie Charlie Charlie

He needs to move on and focus on another offensive coordinator gig!! That's about all he's good for these days, we all know he doesn't understand anything on the defensive side of the ball. Thanks for all the laughs Charlie, beginning with your overall record at Notre Dame and those 13 losses against unranked oppenents (including U of M this past September).

Good luck, and like you said in an interview this past week "hope Notre Dame does well, and I hope the next coach does better than I did" -Charlie Weis

They will, not that hard to beat your record with those great recruits you continue to bring in. What is sad Charlie, is that you came in with great players and you continued to recruit good players but you couldn't be successful. WOW!!

As it should be

There shouldn't be anything out there on it. PC for all we know is separated from his wife and has not driven an SUV into a fire hydrant and tree on his neighbor's property, which is what precipitated Tiger's onslaught of negative publicity. PC can live where and with whom he chooses if he isn't hurting anyone.

Swearing?

Who has ever criticized Weis for swearing? Is this another one of those harmful things the media keeps putting out to ruin his family's life? I can't wait until this scumbag is out of the limelight and I never have to see another quote from him again. He may have a problem with Carroll's private life, but I'm pretty sure gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins, too (though I base my religious knowledge solely on Brad Pitt movies).

People who live in glass houses shouldn't get so fat that they can't fit through the door, Charlie.

The above link

leads to an excerpt from, and a link to, the interview, at http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=rivals-342192. The version of this interview at "Irish Illustrated.com" (http://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1025063) linked by "Irish" in an earlier post (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/coach-weis) is nearly identical, but strangely missing the one paragraph quoted above. (I wonder why the discrepency -- the "Irish Times" version doesn't reveal the posting time and so I can't establish which version has priority. But maybe an attempt was being made after the fact to retroactively erase this jab at Carrol? At any rate, at least two similar, but not identical, versions of the same interview are floating around the intertubes.) This explains to me why "Irish" made no mention of the above in the editorial comments in his own post.

Chuckie, No!

No, I actually thought the

No, I actually thought the linked article was fake but following the link in that article takes you to the "same" interview but it included that addition, and probably some others I didn't reread the whole thing.

Prister has updated the article, was it a mistake on his part that he didn't intend to publish, it seems odd he would have 2 different articles on the same topic running on the same website, not to mention that he was the only reporter of the 5 to publish it.

Whatever the reason it is pretty funny. Weis spoke on why he selected those 5 reporters basically saying they were individuals who he thought were what I would describe as "for the university" and not just looking to make their careers on a hot story (Rosenbergish). And that could very well be exactly what happened, it was probably an honest mistake at least I hope so.

At the same time that quote was meant to be an example of just how stupid the media pressure is on the HC at ND. His intent wasn't to accuse Carroll of anything, it was his attempt at an example of the difference in media scrutiny he and the entire ND football team is under. How a quote taken out of context, is magnified a hundred fold, becomes a national story, and results in baseless comments and opinions like some of those in this thread.

Man I hope the next coach is ready for this, lol

I thought

"Irish Illustrated" might be an official student paper sort of thing. What kind of reporters were the 5, or Prister, for that matter -- fansite, major paper?

The way I read the comments, I sort of thought Weis was flaming Carrol, as well as making the point, forgive me for putting it this way, about how difficult his life is/was. (For comparison, Carrol was getting a boatload of heat this year, too -- and not for how he was setting a low ethical tone for the U, but for how his w-l performance was just UNNACCEPTABLE lol.)

I should think any new coach at ND would be prepared for PR at this level. (I think RR trusted too much in the goodness of mankind.) If the new coach is Kelly, we'll see how the transition from UC to NDU goes.

btw, what exactly were the hurtful stories that Weis is fuming over? All I remember are the frontbutt-load of fat jokes, which are hurtful, but silly, really. Is this what he is on about when he talks about the harm to his family, etc.?

Irish Illustrated is the ND

Irish Illustrated is the ND rivals affiliate, Prister is one of the head guys for them I believe, I am not a subscriber myself.

I haven't had any problem with your comments tbh, you're actually a nice change of pace in comparison to some of the newer posters (and some of the older ones too). Carroll is getting heat but it isn't even close, just a bunch of bandwagon fans and a couple comments on sportscenter. ND has been THE headline on espn for 4 weeks on just the coaching situation alone. Then you add draft decisions, bowl decisions, the weekly Weis sucks story and thats just what is coming from the "world wide leader in sports" lol, yep they're leading.

Honestly I ignore most of the crap that was being said, this board was limited to mostly fat jokes. but I am sure its still out there if your interested. The only real story that I know of was of someone who sent a USC hat to Weis and included a letter which had some very derogatory comments about his special-needs daughter.

btw

If the point that Wies hoped to make was "How a quote taken out of context, is magnified a hundred fold, becomes a national story, and results in baseless comments and opinions like some of those in this thread," then he probably thinks his point is handsomely illustrated. Rule for dealing with press: never tell the press how opportunistic, predatory or perverse the press is. The result will be a sort of meta-physical Kafkaesque space-time-distorting recursive feedback-loop black hole.

Who do you think has had it worse -- Weis or RR?

Seeing these to get into a pissing match

would make me very happy. Weis may have done UM, and a lot of other programs, a HUGE favor by dragging PC into the muck with him.

He really is the gift that keeps on giving!

Ha

Charlie probably should have kept his mouth shut on this one. Although apparently it was supposed to be off the record, and only one of the 4 or 5 reporters in the room chose to publish it.

But whatever, if this causes some local newspaper to look into it, or if some woman comes forward, I'll love it.

I wonder if Mikey Rosenberg will comment on this

In article on SI a week or two ago, Rosenberg rhapsodized about how much more he liked Weis now that he was a loser, finding him more humble, classy, etc, etc, etc. Now Weis is flinging poo as he's going down in a desperate attempt to drag his nemeses down into the pit with him.

The Trifecta.

One stupid, intemperate comment from Charley Weis. Weis automatically looks bad for having made it.

Mikey Rosenberg looks bad for having pronounced favorably on Weis.

And Pete Carroll, who issued a quick, categorical denial of the Weis allegation, is going to look very bad if it turns out to be true. Does anybody suppose that there are, uh, any paparazzi, any gossip-reporters in, uh, Malibu?

Actually, that's the correct answer...

That is, "I have no comment to the press, and to Charlie Weis, I say it is none of your goddamned business."

But Carroll said, "It's untrue...." Let the chase begin, on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis has apologized and insists that heated comments he made about USC coach Pete Carroll were taken out of context and he meant no offense.

Weis, speaking to the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, said he was speaking to several reporters on a "totally subjective" basis as an aside to a formal interview and that the comments were meant to reference Internet rumors in general and how they impact coaches' lives and their families.

"In no way was I trying to take a shot at Pete," Weis said in a phone message to the Los Angeles Times. "What we were talking about was how the rumor mill can affect people's lives.

"When I was asked a specific question like that, I responded like, 'This is the same crap that I'm talking about.' You start saying things like this and one thing, this guy does this and I do that, and all of a sudden the Internet takes it all over the place.

"So, in no way was I trying to take a shot at Pete. I feel if I offended Pete, I will run Pete down and apologize. In no way do I have any idea what's going on in anyone's life other than the fact that rumors on the Internet can affect coaches' lives in a very, very negative fashion."

Prister declined to comment to the Times.

True.

But running is the 2nd worst thing Charlie's good at.

1. Coaching.
2. Running.
3. Accountability.
4. Out-swimming the Yushin Maru II.

I've said often in recent

I've said often in recent days that I've never met anyone for whom there was a bigger gulf between perception and reality, and I think that is true of our departing coach. I hope we can find somebody who loves this University as much as he did, does, and who cared as much about his student athletes as he does.

He made many contributions to the University, important things which serve us in good stead going forward. He demonstrated that he can bring the very best student athletes to this campus and attract them to come here to play football for Notre Dame, and he demonstrated that once they're here, they can have the full success we expect from student athletes.

You know, Charlie did win a National Championship; he won a National Championship when his football program finished first in graduation success rate this year, and that is an important contribution and one which we value very highly.

It's probably a measure of our relationship and how he's approaching this; I had a call from him this morning; he wanted to know how I was doing. He will go on to have great success. He'll add some Super Bowl rings, no doubt, to the ones he already has as a successful coordinator in the NFL, and we will miss him.

Before this goes on too long...

Kinda just wanted to use the Yushin Maru line.

In hindsight, accountability should have been 1 and HEAD coaching should have been 3 (sandwiching running, which you've conceded he is bad at).

My bad. No more quotes. For the love of god... no more quotes.

When there's breakdowns on

When there's breakdowns on either side of the ball, let's specifically, because you addressed defense, let's talk about defense.
You have to look at least multiple elements of breakdowns. Okay. One, always start with coaching. I always start with that, because that's what I do. Starting from the head coach to the coordinators, to the position coach. I think the number one responsibility that we have to do is teach our players what to do. And then there has to be a correlation, a transfer of information from the classroom to the practice field, to the game field. And when that doesn't happen enough times, okay, there's a breakdown there's a breakdown and a communication between the players and the coaches. So before I place any blame on a player ever, it always starts with the teaching element of coaching, which is what coaching really is.

As you look at the entire course of the season, it led you to the conclusion that you couldn't have enough confidence that a jump up was imminent, that you could know with sufficient certainty that next year's results would be significantly different. And so I think that was probably the tipping point.

Married.

3 kids, 1 grandchild. And, possibly, 1 grad student.

I don't know, if there might be any University/faculty/ethical code prohibitions involved if Carroll were involved with a grad student.

Oops -- I meant to reply to Irish:

Anyway, the Weis remarks noted above have now (Sunday evening) been purged from the version of the interview linked in the source above. I now wonder if this paragraph was in the version you [Irish] consulted and linked in your post when you first read it? Tim Prister is listed as the editor in both versions [now reconciled]. I wonder if Weis' comment on Carrol was supposed to be off the record, or if it is being edited out after the fact?

So, I'm confused,

I've read the espn.com story with Weis's "apology", in which he says his remarks were taken out of context, but CW does not say the statement about Carroll was hypothetical, was CW just repeating an internet rumor I appear to have missed?

Indefensible

Irish,

Weis' comment was inexcusable. He took the most high-profile job at a school with a major network television contract, incredibly rich boosters, and a prestige near the top of college sports. He arguably touted himself as a genius play-caller, yet claims surprise his comment was so widely reported, regardless of his audience. I don't believe him. He has to remember Jimmy the Greek's off-the-cuff, "off record" remark becoming national front page news. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples.

And to try to "out" another coach's affair? That can destroy a marriage and a family. I can't remember a more indefensible comment from a college football--no, major college sports--coach. I had gained some respect for Weis when he blamed himself for the poor performance of ND during his tenure. Now I consider him of the worst character.

Yes I do

Espn.com reported that Weis said the following, alluding to Carroll's affair:

"Was I living with a grad student in Malibu, or was I living with my wife in my house? You could bet that if I were living with a grad student here in South Bend, it would be national news.

"He's doing it in Malibu and it's not national news."

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4719509

The comment was directed at Carroll. That's no hypothetical, and he's stated the rumor of Carroll's affair as fact. Weis had to have known of the possibility that one of the five reporters to which he made the quote would report it. And since he was complaining about the scrutiny he receives, he had to have known that if the quote were reported, the rumor would become a national story. Because of Weis' comment, a disparaging rumor that could affect a marriage and family is now a national story. To use the rumor to defend his morals is reprehensible.

Hypothetical or not, Weis made a mistake. You don't have to come on here and try to defend it. Even if it was taken out of context or blown out of proportion, it's not something he should have said. And trust us when we say that we, as Michigan fans, know what it looks like when something gets blown out of proportion.
