Who's most overrated? Underrated? Weirdest rise/drop?

For me, I'd take WVU or Georgia as most overrated, Northwestern most underrated (from a resume standpoint), and I don't have an opinion on weirdest move. I will say that I'm not sure why MSU deserves to be ahead of us, same for at least Boise, probably others.

Had we played (and won) this weekend, I think we'd be ranked again; too many teams in the 20s dropped out for us to be left behind. Bad timing for a bye week.

Ohio's on field product has been good enough to be ranked. I don't think we should punish the whole conference over Tressel lying.

But yeah, three teams isn't exactly inspiring, although I expect Michigan and Michigan State to be ranked for most of the season. Five ranked teams isn't terrible.

They'll do well to go 2-2 in that stretch, and an 8-4ish Big Ten team probably won't be ranked, especially right after losses. Purdue, maybe? I only see two likely losses on their schedule (us and Ohio), and they've got to be favored to "win" their division at this point.

I'm looking forward to Florida vs. LSU.  Both are teams with something to prove.  It could be a great football game.

SC-GA is showing as the ESPN game.  Would that be the game Herbstreit helps call?  Or is it possible he'd leave the Gameday set and jet up to Columbus to join Mussberger?

Honest questions ... I really don't know how this tends to work.

At this point it's Alabama, then everyone else.

Seriously ... the number two through nine teams could be put in any order and most would say, "Meh ... whatever."

That said, I really like what I saw out of WVA's offense.  Yeah, the defense is suspect.  But Geno Smith looked good ... really good.

Admittedly, some of that was he had little pressure in the backfield.  I would love to see WVA play a tough D school, just to see what moxie that WVA offense really has.

Very good point.  Maybe throw Texas Tech and TCU in that mix.

Big 12 in terms of national rankings for total defense ... and when WVA plays them:

#1 - Texas Tech ... WVA plays Oct 13th

#7 - TCU ... WVA plays Nov 3rd

#12 - Oklahoma ... WVA plays Nov 17th

#18 - Iowa State ... WVA plays Nov 23rd

#46 - Kansas State ... WVA plays Oct 20th

#56 - Oklahoma State ... WVA plays Nov 10th

#64 - Texas ... WVA plays Oct 6th

#90 - Kansas ... WVA plays Dec 1st

#108 - West Virginia

#124 - Baylor ... WVA played Sept 29th

Admittedly not the most scientific list since TT and TCU might have earned their high total defense rankings playing creampuffs.  Still, it's telling that at this stage of the season the 70-63 game was between the #108 defense and the #124 defense.

So yes ... some interesting games coming up for WVA.

Northwestern will drop out of the polls as soon as they play someone relevant, which might not be until they play Nebraska on October 20th.  The next 2 weeks, they travel to Penn State and Minnesota.

They have a bye week before playing us in November, but I want to pound them after Fitzgerald's "Michigan didn't do anything, we beat ourselves," comment from last year.

It was just a couple sentences but when he said Michigan didn't do anything and it was all THEIR own fault that we shut them out 28-0 in the second half, I wasn't happy.  Screw him.  I hope we beat them by 50 when they come to the big house.

I was down on the blue turf last year while visiting Boise.  It's bright in person, too.  Still, cool to be down on the field.

You're right ... BSU is a nice underdog story.  It's hard to not like their desire to do away games with well-known teams as a way to increase their exposure.  They certainly had their success in the past with that.

I'm guessing this year there's a bit of residual fondness for BSU ... and frankly, this year anything beyond the top 5 is pretty meaningless anyway.

As an alum of a Big Ten institution, there is something oddly humbling about the Coaches' Poll having three Big East teams and only two Big Ten teams, one of them being Northwestern.

The SEC has six teams in  both polls, and the  Big XII has six in the AP and five in the Coaches' Poll, and the Pac-12 similarly has five in the AP Poll and four in the Coaches' Poll. Clearly, whereas in an earlier thread, I sat there breaking down their average offensive stats and showed they were mostly comparable, I would then see the polls and realize that box scores and poll votes have exactly zero correlation.

Disappointing rankings but not unheard of. The big ten has ranked between 2 and 7 teams (including Nebraska) in the AP top 25 since the 1996. We had 2 teams in the top 25 three times in 2001 (Purdue, Michigan, Illinois), three times in 2007 (Ohio State, Michigan), and once in 2009 (Penn State, Ohio State).

Between 2006 and present, we have fluctuated between 3 and 4 teams ranked in the top 25. Prior to that the range was marginally more volatile ranging between 3 and 7 teams ranked in the top 25.

It should be noted that just because we had 7 teams ranked, did not equate to winning NC's. No winner or participant came from the B1G in the 1999 season as well as the 2003 season. Seems to me that Michigan won a NC while there were 3 ranked teams and Ohio won during a season which saw B1G with as little as 2 ranked teams.

Rankings are stupid. Go Blue!

There were going to be weekly write-ups like last year, but Jeff wanted to crowdsource writing duty. I emailed him about doing some of the writing, and haven't heard back (I emailed him on 9/2, so it's been a while). Honestly I would just go ahead and write, but I don't have access to updated standings and he told me in a thread that others had volunteered as well, so I don't want to step on any toes.
