Washington, Alabama, Michigan/OSU, and Clemson all have the inside track to a playoff spot and control their own destiny. That's very important. If Houston wins out they could sneak in if there is a one or two loss conference champion. Things look bleak for the Big 12. I'm not so sure an undefeated Baylor would get in over a one loss Alabama or SEC champion.

We should move up to #3 unless Clemson jumps us.  If we hadn't just beaten Wisconsin (to match their win over Louisville) then I'd guess they'd jump us, but with FSU losing, beating Louisville doesn't look as impressive.

True. But Wisconsin also beat LSU.  That's two big wins, over Big Ten and SEC opponents. Louisville beat Charlotte, Syracuse, Marshall, and FSU (at home). That's not a great schedule, but it was used to justify their rankings jump for #19 to #3 before the clemson game.  Wisconsin beat LSU (neutral site, but barely), Akron, GA state, and MSU (on the road) to get their #8 ranking.  Granted, MSU lost to Iowa and Wisky, but LSU is 2-1 in the SEC so far, so Wisky's schedule is better in my epinion.

If you've watched any of Oklahoma's other games it's way less impressive. That's a "quality win" on reputation only. Same as it is for Houston. I'm not saying OSU isn't good (they are); I'm saying that the "they haven't played anyone" label absolutely applies to them.

Oklahoma isn't great, but I wouldn't say they're a nobody either. And again, it was a total beatdown in Norman. HOWEVA, I do agree that in most people's eyes a win over Oklahoma still means more than a win over a Wisconsin that has shown themselves to be much more impressive than Oklahoma.

OSU's SOS is now worse than ours, but they have taken care of business. They won on the road at Oklahoma, and have not really been even threatened in a game yet. According to some advanced stats, you could make a case for them to be #1.

I think the strike against Michigan right now is we have not played a road game yet.

It's not absurd in the least, given what goes into polling: If Clemson jumps us, it will be because they were in a prime-time GameDay glamor matchup against a powerful offensive team led by an electric Heisman frontrunner in which Clemson had to stage a dramatic come-from-behind win, all against the background of coming up just short in last year's NC game against Alabama.

Meanwhile we were in a low-scoring daytime slugfest against a Wisconsin team that doesn't have any electric playmakers on offense and just plays strong defense. 14-7 doesn't raise eyebrows among pollsters accustomed to Playstation scores.

I'm not saying that any of this makes ultimate logical sense, but much of polling doesn't to begin with. Is a team that's beaten Northwestern, North Carolina Central, Georgia Southern, Illinois, and CMU really the 25th best team in the country, and better than Georgia, TCU, Texas, Maryland, Auburn, and VTech?

Many of the media's so-called "power rankings" had them ahead of Michigan already, so the winner of LOU-Clemson was going to be #3, if not #2, this week.

Finishing the season in the Top 4 of the Playoff rankings is all that really matters.

It's hard to justify keeping Bama at #1 unless you use the "well, it's Bama" argument. OSU has looked better in all phases than Alabama, but I doubt the pollsters adjust accordingly. If we could generate some fireworks on offense we too would be vying for a #1 ranking...

1)OSU

2)Alabama

3)Clemson

4)Michigan

5)Washington
