124 Division I football teams in the nation. Meaning there are probably anywhere from 50-62 games on any given weekend. Even if voters ONLY paid attention to Top-25 teams that can still be 13-25 games they have to watch, 36-75 hours of game film.

I don't think it's possible for voters to actually watch all the games AND still get the rankings out by Sunday.

Even if you extended the day the rankings are released, a lot of these voters have jobs (writers, commentators, coaches and etc.). I doubt they're going to have time to watch 75 hours of football every week. So unless they want to switch to a system that doesn't rely on human voters, then this is the best the rankings are going to get.

It makes perfect sense.  Nobody watched MSU's game.  All they saw was the score and a W.      The Michigan game and interceptions are plastered all over the sports news, so everybody knows how that went, even if they didn't have an opportunity to watch it.  The latest move in the polls is based on the latest game, and Michigan lost in ugly fashion.

how much of a homer do you have to be to not understand michigan dropping out?  We were embarrassed once on national tv, and saw our "superstar player" embarrass himself the second time on national tv.  We narrowly beat a military academy, and smoked the worst team in the FBS.  What exactly is worthy of a top 25 ranking here?

 

We have the potential to be one, but it would unfair to other teams to rank us over them when we haven't shown anything yet.

That's pretty much it. Two-loss teams shouldn't be in the top-25 of any given year, period, just 4 weeks in the season.

For all of MSU's struggles yesterday, they still won. They're not going to drop until they lose again, or somebody behind them makes a big statement win to justify moving ahead of MSU. 

Besides, polls right now still don't mean very much. It all (theoretically) sorts itself out as the sample size becomes larger.

I understand what you're saying, completely. The part that is frustrating to me is NOT that we dropped out (so, others, please knock off the homer crap), but rather that MSU moved UP with a crap win where they needed 16 points in the fourth quarter. I understand that the voters didn't watch the MSU game, but am I the only one that sees that as a problem? If people like us can do it, why is it too much to expect them to do it when it's their job? The part that really irritates me reading the responses to my original post, though, is the suggestion that we deserved to move down as much as MSU did after their loss to ND. I just can't make that logical connection. We lost a game that we could have definitely won (I would argue dominated in almost every aspect), on the road, to the team that waxed them the week before on their home field. I get that MSU dropped a bunch after loss to ND, but MSU was also at home, the higher ranked team, favored in that game and got whipped. We were on the road, the lower ranked team, not favored and the game came down to the last possession.

Am I crazy for feeling better about our B1G chances after last night's game?  Aside from the turnovers, we looked great.  Our defense was stout as hell.  It took awhile, but Fitz finally got going and I thought our OL looked pretty good overall.  You take away the bonehead turnovers and we looked like a legitimate B1G contender.

 

On another note, I'm seeing rumors on other sites that Garnder might be out for the season with a broken collarbone from the bleacher run-in.  Can anyone confirm?

Makes sense.  UM has to beat some of these teams before people will take them seriously.  And honestly, it wasn't an MNC year anyway; the rankings are pretty irrelevant to most teams in that context.

As long as we beat MSU and OSU, I will be happy. Winning the Big Ten would be a nice bonus. At this point we are 2-2, with our only losses to top ten teams. This season can still be a huge success. Hopefully this upcomming bye week is utilized to the fullest extent. Our defense actually looked quite stout last night, so as long as we implement a more secure offensive gameplan I'm actually not feeling too bad at this point.

If we can win the next 8 games, then we deserve that top 25 ranking.  The Big 10 is getting beat up in the media because of a perceived lack of quality this year.  So if 1 team is ranked in the top 10 at the end of year, then I would consider it a good thing.  UM can run the table from here on out, but we can't have another performance like last night

Oregon deserves their #2 ranking. Yes they have been known this year and past years to make some bad turnovers but I'll tell you one thing, their offense has the ability to score at will. That team has unreal speed in both receiving and in their secondary! Did you watch the game vs Arizona? The safeties on that team flat out scream down field. They made Arizona look pathetic but in my view Arizona wasn't very good to start with.

Watching the Oregon game I was surprised. I expected Arizona to score on them like everybody has, and was looking for a little bit of a shootout. Then Arizona can't score, but they hold Oregon to 13 first half points. The final score wasn't really an indication of how the game went. I think it's entirely possible for a team to shut down Oregon for a whole game, now that a first year RR 3-3-5 defense did it to them for an entire half @ Oregon. Surprised to see KState jump Stanford, since Stanford beat a better opponent. Also surprised to see Rutgers get ranked over Northwestern, or Boise ranked at all after the BYU game. Like I was saying yesterday I'd be surprised if Oklahoma, West Virginia, and South Carolina are even ranked by the end of the season. All look like they could be 4+ loss teams in December.
