Webb/Ray Spring Mock Draft on WTKA

Submitted by BlueKoj on

Marcus had 1st pick (see comment). Then Sam took next two, then 1 for 1 and so on. Ray's DL strength to Webb's OL strength. I think Sam's is better. Picks in each team's order. Some strangeness due to one filling a position group and the other waiting.

I'll be praying for overtime in this game. The spring game needs to be full of highlights. This is all we will have for the next few months. I'll go back and watch at least once a day.

I would draft DL in early rounds here because there isn't much depth.  I wouldn't want to get stuck with the reserves on the DL.  I'd also draft RB's and LB's later since we have depth and not a lot of differentiation there.

So in my mind the early draft isn't saying DL will be a strength, so much as it could signal lack of depth.  Unless this is like changes in players weight during the offseason, where all news is good news.

I wasn't basing my comment simply on draft position, but I don't think we lack depth on the DL. At NT, Pipkins is 3rd string. Other DT/DE guys include Wormley, Henry, Godin and Taco who all have lots of PT and throw in Hurst, Poggi and MO who all have showed promise. That's not a bad amount of depth and (thankfully) doesn't include any frosh.

I was going to ask that it be listed by draft order, but then i just copied and pasted to excel, rearranged, and re-pasted here if that helps anyone. Or, I'm not sure how this is going to work, so I'm sorry if I break the internet:

Peppers is supposedly a safety now.

In the draft, Sam got both starting safeties and Ray both starting corners.  Both got half the assumed starting DL.  They split the 4some of LB - Ross, Gedeon, Bolden, Morgan.   If you believe the LTT hype Sam did better on the OL.  Who the hell knows on the QBs.  The purported top 2 RBs (until Drake gets back) are split.  Ray won the TE battle with Butt being the one established star.  The WRs look evenly split.

So in the end it comes down to the QBs.  Doesnt it always? ;)

Sam locked up the safties and picked D Hill so he could them move JP to corner (since Marcus locked up Lewis/Countess). It necessarily devolves from reality due to spring game and what the other guy did. Sam also took Winovich as LB which I don't think should have been allowed since he is clearly at TE. That screwed Marcus.

Quick thoughts on ordering:

  • Butt is lower than I'd take
  • Had Lewis, Butt, Henry, Peppers as my top 4 so generally agree there.
  • Love seeing Cole so high
  • Well both Coles that high
  • Kalis way higher than I assumed
  • Ross as the first LB is a surprise if only with how marginalized Mattison had him last year
  • Would have wished our DEs were picked higher but looks like a relative project area in 2015
  • First RB at #30 is not encouraging
  • Wormley and Henry were my 2 breakout picks last year on the DL - 1 for 2.  But love seeing Wormley again getting love.  With consistent effort he can be a playmaker this year.

Borton/Balas defense looks pretty damn tough. It seems most are focused on the O-side. Wormley, Pipkins and Mone give you three 300 pounders on the line with Morgan and Ross as LBs and Peppers, Countess and Stribling on the back end. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

This draft seems to confirm what we saw in that practice report the other day -- Morris is in front right now, with Malzone close behind, and Speight clearly #3 at this point.

Let's hope all these data points mean the lights have finally come on for Shane.
