We Will Know About Jake Rudock Soon - Obstacles Remain

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Per every Michigan tweeter, Jake Rudock is visiting soon and we will know, in relatively short order, whether he will be Michigan's next QB.

A few key tweets:

#Michigan has not offered Rudock yet but he is expected to accept if offered on his visit to Ann Arbor this weekend. http://t.co/zTqfioKfOF

Sources tell me that Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz will release transfer QB Jake Rudock to #Michigan. http://t.co/zTqfioKfOF via @247Sports

Ex #Iowa QB Jake Rudock is heading to #Michigan for a visit in the next 36 hrs, per source. Hopes to hear from B1G in next wk or so on elig.

Of note on Rudock stuff: B1G's revised intraconference transfer policy doesn't have a special exception for immediately eligible grad xfers

So what are the obstacles that remain?  Reading through the thread is sounds like Ferentz has released him, so the B1G intraconference hurdle is cleared.  I assume Feldman's "elig" tweet was also related to that, is that correct.

If true, are the only hurdels offer and acceptance?

From my read on the situation, Ferentz could have blocked Rudock, but his granting release doesn't guarantee Rudock eligiblity under B1G rules.

It seems like intra-conference B1G grad transfers have to be granted a waiver to play immediately regardless of what the previous coach allows.

Kudos to Ferentz for doing this, though it's probably the right decision for him strategically.  Let's say he thinks that Rudock would likely go to Michigan and that he'd improve Michigan's roster.  On balance, it's almost definitely good for Iowa for Rudock to go to Michigan, since we don't play Iowa, we do play a bunch of teams in Iowa's division, and it's the overall Big Ten record that counts for the standings.

I'm sure you can go to Boise State, win some games, and have fun. But no matter what, you're bound to be considered a soft-tossing system quarterback. If Rudock wants to play in the NFL, he'll have a much bigger stage and better preparation in Ann Arbor.

Why does this guy not have an offer yet?  Why is it that a QB who is proven to not suck horribly wants to come here and we aren't moving heaven and Earth to take him?  This is worth about two wins to our expectations for 2015.  Anything remotely resembling a roadblock should be getting hit with a sledgehammer.

I'm surprised that Ferentz doesn't feel a little bit "Snake Oiled" because of Higdon and put up a little bit of a fight on the release.

I believe his daughter attended Michigan.

This is good for us. If Rudock is the starter, it will help the other QB's on the offense become further acclimated with the college game. Who knows what will happen, but Rudock should put Michigan into position to win 9 games minimum IMO.

Hope we can land him. Rudock likely won't set the world on fire, but he's got a lot of in game experience and put up decent numbers in a similarly run offense. Him coming in will give the younger guys more time to get better acclimated to the playbook and the overall college game.

He can be a very effective game manager, which is all we can ask for at this point in time. Plus, the whole him going to med school thing must mean he's a really smart guy with a good head in his shoulders. Hopefully he'd provide some leadership that the team so sorely needs.

I know zero about this kid and a lot of people seem to think he will start if he comes. Can someone give me the cliff notes on him? If he is good enough to start at UM with very little practice time, why is he leaving Iowa?

High TD:INT ratio and high completion percentage. Safe and efficient. Wants to play for/get coached by Harbaugh for better shot at NFL. Also play in offense that doesn't frown upon throwing the ball past the line of scrimmage

Our current guys have I believe 0 TDs and 5 INTs combined. That's the upside.

Rudock is not a world beater nor someone to take a team on his back.  He is a solid and uninspiring QB.  Which is a major upgrade over what we have now which is right now - nothing but hope.

Whatever QB we have next year I expect this to be a run based offense behind a finally functional OL.  The QB will not be throwing 40 yard bombs - he will  be a game manager typed tasked to not friggin turn the ball over constantly and keep the defense honest.  Rudock can do that.  He won't throw a pretty 28 yard out pattern.  It is what it is.

IF he can be a highly productive but "game manager" type of QB.  I think Michigan can do really well this next season with a QB who manages games and doesn't turn the ball over very much.  This assumes our defense is even better, our special teams are a lot better (no brainer), and our running game is improved by quite a bit with the Drevno/Wheatley impact.  If nothing else, he's an insurance policy in case Morris/Speight/Malzone aren't ready.

I wouldnt expect a big jump from the D.  We lost 2 NFl players in Clark and Ryan.  Along with Henry and Lewis that is 2 of our top 4 players.  You add Peppers.  You hope the DEs are functional but you lost depth there - Poggi is apparently playing offense.   If we can get a wash out of the defense I will be pleased.

ST should be better by default.  Hard to be worse.

You lose Ryan, but gain Morgan. Which in complete honesty is basically a wash with the way Morgan really came on and the position that Ryan played last year. You get the most dynamic player off of last years team, who got hurt, back. And you gain a 5th year senior with a bunch of experience in Lyons. Not to mention a bunch of recruits in and better coaching.

Plus everyone is a year older and more experienced. So the only real thing the defense is lacking in is defensive end. More interior players like Willie Henry are great pass rushers, so that helps a ton. I fully expect the defense to take a step up.

for the QB position.  That's a good thing.  If Harbaugh starts someone else, maybe during the season, it will be because he has confidence that the upside of the replacement has become more likely to happen with less downside than is feared as of now.
