landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
We just lost to Penn State... I don't even know anymore... Snowflakes
It was embarrasing. But it was a meaningless regular season game. Better to have a wake up call now when less is on the line than like last year in the tournament
And if we can't beat Penn State, losing 3 of our last four and an early out in the B1G Tourney is not the makings of a 2 seed.
I care about making a deep tournament run much more than a big ten championship, which has become basically a meaningless title since the big ten tournament.
And yeah, a long tournament run cures all ills. But after losing to Penn State, I'm not sure anything less than a Final Four heals all wounds. Elite 8 and might be breaking even. I'm not sure Sweet 16, which should be a given with this team really makes up for tonight.
And regular season title > B1G Tournment title. Regular season determines a champ; the tourney is just a money grab.
Just seem the team gave up tonight. Not a good sign as we approach the tourney! It still possible to win out but this team will have to play with a lot more effort! I could see both MSU and iU beating us at home fairly easily if we don't play harder! Games like this make me wish spring football was here! But I'm still hoping that the team can recover after such a horrific loss!
attitude and heart, this team is NOT getting to the Sweet 16. They clearly don't have the leadership and experience to get very far. Talent yes. But, that isn't nearly enough.
Should've been the wake up call on top of the three other road wake up calls in February. A 3-4 record in the month of February is brutal.
Snowflakes? This is going to be a goddamn blizzard.
This is as bad as Kansas's loss to TCU
Bunch of pussies with no heart or commitment to defense. Useless on defense.
Sums up how I feel. I don't know how much more I can yell at the TV to block out and play some damn D! Every team outhustles us.....every one. What the hell? It is McGary and THJ playing with emotion and that is it. A whole game of "Aw shucks" defense.
Remember that these are kids, most of them can't even drink. It is inevitable that there will be some growing pains. How about we put together a highlight reel of all the stupid mistakes mgobloggers made in their twenties and then we broadcast it on television.
You can be sad that we lost - it hurts, I know - but think about how you would feel if someone was saying those things about your kid.
i cant imagine what the team is thinking right now - just gotta MIB mind erase this one.
also, i think the team is calling themselves the same stuff this guy is saying, probably worse. they arent kids - they are grown men who know how to take the heat when they lose to the worst team in the conference. no need to coddle them.
What i would question would be beilein defenses in his coaching career - has this guy put up elite type defenses? I am questioning the man's defensive coaching ceiling without any basis here but he may not have a solid defensive mind.
Stauskas was the worst offender. 12 points on 9 shots does not make up for his deficiencies on the other end of the floor. What happened to the swag?
I want to say it's time for him to come off the bench instead of start, but who do we put in his place...?
I think Belein needs to be seriously questioned. He has completely lost this team, and the effort on defense is beyond embarassing.
The only reason we're all so righteously pissed right now is because Beilein took us from the netherworld all the way up to the point where we were expecting to be a 1-seed
What say you, Phil in Scio Township?
I'm not saying that his job should be questioned. I'm saying there are legitimate questions to ask about how he is preparing the team and why they are getting worse as the season goes on.
That's fair. But to say he has "completely lost this team" when they are 23-5 is going overboard.
I dunno. 3-4 in the month of February. A complete whooping at the hands of Sparty, poor coaching decisions down the stretch that led to an OT loss to Wisconsin, barely and uninspiringly hanging on at home against the worst team in the B1G and now, when at least a share of the Big Ten title was in our control, we just gave PSU their first conference win of the season when we were up by 15 with 10 minutes left.
There's an immense amount of talent on this team, enough to win a national championship I dare say. Understandbly, any team is going to struggle in this conference, however, the way we tumbled so suddenly and in such apathetic fashion is inexcusable. To say Beilein has lost this team (to a very mild extent) is not as far fetched as it seems. A team doesn't just go from #1 on Feb 3rd to by the end of the month having 4 more losses, including one against the worst team in the conference, unless mental mistakes are occuring by all members of the team, coaches and players alike.
Now, do I think Beilein lost this team? No. From what I heard from sources directly connected to the program, they've been lost since day one; At each other's throats and not getting along by the time the freshmen first rolled in. That lack of comraderie and morale is finally affecting them as their pure talent can no longer coast them through games this late in the season. They need to wake up and decide if they want to be champs. We'll know on Sunday what they decided to do.
I had thought the off-the-court chemistry was pretty good
Or was I just eating up the mgoblue and mlive feel-good stories?
... in the person of Trey Burke.
people were trying to compare them to the Fab 5 which is ridiculous. Its the most talent we have had in 15 years, but that is not saying a whole lot.
you're gonna piss the God's off. Hush
I has them
When I made this exact thread after UM lost to PSU, I got removed as a mod
Lulz PSU lulz
Sweet 16 and that's all folks. Too young, and an overreliance on Burke.
Sweet 16 would be amazing with the way we have played this entire month. Seriously, our last dominant game was Jan 30th vs Northwestern. Even when we beat Illinois this past week, we played one good half only.
Any 15 seed that can commit to outhustling them and outworking them has a real good shot of winning. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they lost in the first round. Also wouldn't surprise me to see them in the Final Four. Such a wishy washy and confusing team...
That was terrible. Only snowflake was Beilien actually calling out Stauskas' on his pathetic defense
am i you? Nice post ^
Absolutely no rotations on defense. Morgan is the only one who even looks to have a clue on defense. Pathetically bad. Stauskas needs to sit whether that's in favor of Caris(who brings good defense) or McGary who would give us two bigs and more intensity, I do not know. But either way he needs to come off the bench.
I think I agree. Stauskas is becoming a liability. His 20% 3-pt. these days shooting isn't worthy of keeping him on the floor.
meh, all things considered, i'd much rather lose this game than lose in 3 weeks.
you make it sound as though the two are mutually exclusive
But they're really not dependent on each other either. Teams have bad games. Duke had a game like this against BC that they pulled out because BC couldn't make a bucket at the end. This stuff happens, so let's not get all chicken little just yet.
Bad game? They haven't played well in weeks. This team refuses to hustle defensively, and it's gonna kill them in the BT tournament and the NCAA tournament.
Well, it's a good thing that's how it works. Since we lost now, it's guaranteed that we won't lose in three weeks. I don't know why every team doesn't follow this awesome strategy.
Maybe losing this game and looking like crap during the past few weeks is a good indicator that we will lose in three weeks.
How does this comment still have 2 points? This is idiotic and typical of an ESPN.COM comment. Is your IQ lower than tonight's score?
Come on Herm, let's all play nice
How did Herm get sent to Bolivia? This better be epic.
Herm remembers when Bolivia was called "Upper Peru," and probably prefers to still refer to it thusly.
I think it was because he (and by "he" I mean RDT) used some overly profane language and Profitgoblue decided it was over the line. There was probably a warning or something.
tongue in cheek political and PGB wasn't in the mood. Upper Peru'd for a month.
Are not mutually exclusive
that was piss poor.
Maybe one snowflake - Beilein getting into Stauskas about his shitty defense.
Every team has had an upset like this during this season. We are no longer any different.
not to the worst team in the B1G
No one has a loss like this, since it's Penn State's only win in the Big Ten.
Penn St. is around #200 in RPI. They are downright terrible
I'll say it: John Beilein is not a great coach in a close game with under a minute left.
And it's compounded by the fact that these guys looked unprepared, disinterested, and totally outcoached for all but the first two minutes of the second half.
You're not going to get a call on the road in this conference. You're especially not going to get a call on the road when the home team is surging to upset a top-5 team. That's a given. It's how you react to it that counts. And Coach had this team totally undermatched to meet the challenge.
Disappointing. I thought we were past this kind of garbage.
I'm begining to think John Beilein is a good coach and not a great coach, period. This team has regressed, and it's not just this game. Where's the learning? Where's the mental preparation for this part of the season? I know: freshman. But they're not all freshmen. Great coaches build on the season. that hasn't really happened here. Can anyone here say that the past month, even in games won, you've seen this team make great strides with problems they had at the beginning of the season?
They might not all be freshman but they only run a 9 man rotation out there and 5 are freshman. One of the non-freshman was and still is hobbled by a really bad ankle sprain. He is not going to be 100% for a while; ankle sprains linger and the ligaments and tendons are always more prone to spraining. The team is still very young and inexperienced. And have they really regressed? We barely beat Pitt and NC State. In both those wins, we also had the benefit of a poor call in our favor to help stave off the comebacks. Even early on in the season, we had poor starts or poor halves of a game. It seems and seemed that so much of our ability to win games depended on our 3 point shooting, which we are losing as Stauskas is going through a slump. Maybe this is just a slump with some poor play, slopping possessions, a shooting slump, and the wear and tear of the Big Ten season, and we are losing our ability to overcome these setbacks.
Although I did not get to watch the game tonight, it has seemed our defense has regressed or maybe teams have identified our weaknesses and how to attack them, particularly the freshman. Maybe we cannot keep masking that 4 of our top 7 players are freshman who are not in as good of shape as all non-freshman. We will see in the next couple of games.
I'll say it: John Beilein is not a great coach in a close game with under a minute left.
I'm not sure about this. Remember the UCLA game when we clinched it on a beautiful backdoor pass to DeShawn Sims?
We have had trouble in end-of-half situations the last two years, though. I don't know what the deal is about that. Beilein's better than just asking his PG to play hero ball every possession. It's hard to understand.
I mean, it's Basketball 101 stuff out there. Any middle school basketball coach knows to foul sooner than 13 seconds into a possession with under a minute left on the clock. Any middle school basketball coach knows not to let a Wisconsin player walk to midcourt and launch a three with under five seconds left when a quick foul probably ends the damn game.
It's like kryptonite for this guy. Inside a minute, he completely loses the plot on things that should be totally basic. And this isn't a new development, either.
The Wisconsin thing isn't fair. Beilein wanted us to foul there and LeVert didn't/couldn't.
Sure it's fair. Not putting anyone on the inbounder was about as stupid as you can get.
Remember the 2010-2011 team winning down the stretch in Breslin with the Stu dagger?
Some of it might be on Burke. He is a fantastic player and normally a pretty great distributor, but it seems like at the end of a game he wants to do too much by himself and doesn't look enough for his teammates.
In that Stu shot against MSU, Morris penetrated but then kicked it back out to Stu for the open three. I feel like Burke, in the same situation, maybe would have tried to take a contested shot there.
not a great coach in a class game. I guess we beat Duke in 2008 despite Beilein's coaching, with a roster with 1/10 of the talent as we do now.
some of you on here have ZERO perspective and patience. It is obvious this fan base is not used to being a top ranked with all of the meltdowns on this board.
I am still waiting for this team to play with some desire and emotion. Some defense would be nice as well.
and I'm getting drunk. Fuck my exam.
This has to be on Beilein. Get your players ready to play. Get them to play defense. Get them to show some fucking emotion. We now know that the defense being bad was not because of Jordan Morgan's absense. Unbelievable. Fucking fuck.
fuck this team. they deserved that. I dont care if theyre college kids and theyre trying. Im sure theyre not happy about it either, but I couldnt give a flying fuck. I liked Beilein. That whole team can eat shit now
You want kittens? Here, have damn kittens!
No sir,F YOU.
Have fun in Bolivia!
We can never seem the win a game when something big is for the taking. Earlier this year it was the #1 ranking, then 1st place in the Big Ten, and now a chance to take the title, and play like absolute shit. Young guys get way too ahead of themselves. Oh and all those joke charge calls didn't help either.
The coaches seem unable to motivate the team, and the players just don't give a shit.
team SUCKS on the road and will be lucky to make it to the round of 32!!!
Except that tournament games aren't played on the road.
was the last tournament game at Crisler (that's what I thought).....
I said this "teams SUCKS on the road (which is true) and will be lucky to make the round of 32.
I didn't say "this team SUCKS and that is why we will be lucky to make it to the round of 32".
It's OK though, we are all pissed off about this debacle and are letting off some steam.
I am going to be depressed for awhile now.
I am starting to question Beilein's coaching approach for big games and road games. UM does not show up and become one dimensional through Burke. And don't tell me about how young this team is; they just got beat by the worst team in the conference. The fact that PSU took over the game after being down 15 is inexcusable. It seems to me that UM was content to sit around the rest of the game instead of continuing to attack.
I hope that Beilein realizes his team isn't good enough to go into cruise control at any time during a game and adjusts his strategy accordingly.
Our problem wasn't on offense. We actually continued to score at a respectable pace. Our problem was some catastrophically bad defense, especially on the perimeter.
(saying it here instead of out loud)
Agreed. I just had the worst night of this horrid month and it got compounded by this pathetic show of, well, everything...I'm taking down my own damn wallpaper for a bit to help cool down. Maybe a picture of kittens or something...
...but did anyone read it?
The Penn State football game in '09 cost me a couple of nights on the couch.
You are trying to watch a game when you could be cleaning the bathroom, giving her a foot rub, or generally planning ways to make her happy. Who the hell cares if you are?
We are have not lost at home or on neutral sites this year. All NCAA tourney games are neutral sites
Hold onto the not losing on a neutral court but that whole undefeated at home is going to end Saturday and when we play Indiana. No way in HELL this team wins against those two, we may not win again until the tournament.
Tim Hardaway Jr. wants to appologize a few weeks ago? The whole damn team better appologizing to themselves for that piss poor performance. I can't believe what I just saw. This team doesn't deserve a #1 seed. We just lost to a team that is garbage. We're worse. What have we done to prove we're a great team? Hell, even a good team? NOTHING. I hope we drop out of the top 15, maybe that'll get these boys heads on straight. Absolutely disgusting. This team takes nights off. It is obvious. Absolutely vile, stinking, trash performance.
Are you still a thing?
I guess you conveniently forgot that the fab five used to take nights off like this, remember Northwestern 1993?
get a grip people
Keep looking at the sky.
I am not making any excuses and I am definitely not thinking the sky is falling.
Best case scenario now is a 2 seed in the same quadrant as 1 seed Gonzaga. No more Big Ten title aspirations.
This team has regressed more than any team in the country. No one that has watched them during the last three weeks would put them at fourth. They are beyond terrible on defense.
Relegate Stauskas to the bench, his defense is atrocious and it outweighs what he does on the offensive end.
He has dead legs, wasn't a plus defender before and his once-automatic 3-pt shot has regressed--short on a lot of them. A physical specimen like GRIII can log a lot of minutes as a freshman, but Nik has been on the court too much...don't understand why Matty Vogrich couldn't have gotten some minutes.
This team can score flashy. Too bad they can't defend or rebound. I can't defend Belein anymore. They don't have to be MSU or OSU great, they just have to be not lazy. They sag off on the ball. They hedge every pick (often poorly) and they are terrible at rotating to shooters. They never pressure or try to cause turnovers. They don't box out. Against the worst team in the fucking conference they play laxadaisical with the ball. Since MSU the effort and improvement has been non-existent. What a joke.
You nailed every point on this one. These guys are soft and, yes, I know they are freshmen. However, as we UM fans know....freshman absolutely can play with fire, emotion and passion. Man....I would love to see a little Rose and Webber in our boys (minus the $ handshakes, of course).
A day after the door to a #1-seed and a B1G title were flung wide open again, we blow a 15 point second half lead to Penn State to effectively shut the door on either of those happening! Damn it!
What is this....I don't even...
Fuck everything. Just threw a chair.
Team lost interest when it got up by 13. Tough homer calls were tough, but to be expected on the worst team's senior night. I feel coach should've done something. I don't know what, but that slide from up by double digits to down was pretty quick and seemingly without much effort by PSU.
This is one night we definitely missed Stu and Zack. Veteran teams understand to bring it every game and take care of these games on the schedule. Young teams play hard in spurts and think they can take stretches off. We played hard for the first 10 minutes of the second half and thought the game was over.
There were multiple times tonight where PSU lost the ball, or had a rebound fall short, under our basket and we had a guy right in position to dive on the floor and pick it up. Repeatedly, they beat us to the ball. I'm sure that will get some guys chewed out in the film room. That's effort.
College basketball is great when you're beating more talented teams b/c you have guys like Zack and Stu. The other side of that coin is a team like this, which is more talented than most (though not as talented as a lot of people seem to think they are). Young teams f--- up. The Fab 5 went 11-7 in the Big Ten...This is just the way things go sometimes. These guys still need to learn a lot of things - a lot of them weren't born when the Fab 5 got to Michigan!
Yeah well we're kinda fucked there now aren't we? We're going to lose Burke and Hardaway to the draft and no way in hell does next year's team have the potential this one had.
I think there's a good chance Hardaway comes back. He needs to work on a lot of things...Also, Michigan has some very good players coming in, and we shouldn't underestimate the improvement McGary, Robinson, etc. can make over a year.
And that Big Ten would have killed this Big Ten.
The Fab Five joined a team that had four returning starters. They eventually beat them all out, but those guys were still around if needed. We would have lost in the Sweet 16 without Riley having a huge game against OK State and then Voskuil came up big in the Final Four against Cincy.
A freshman is maybe the fourth best player on this team.
We can go around and around on this forever. Bottom line: the Fab Five were exceptional and even so, they had bad games. I don't think that can be disputed.
This team is not so good that it is immune to a bad loss. We had done a good job until tonight of avoiding that bad loss, but it finally came.
That Big Ten was much better than this one, but none of this year's freshman are as good as Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, or Juwan Howard (or maybe even Jimmy King)...It says a lot about where we are in college basketball when we think a sophomore is an older guy. Trey Burke can't buy himself a beer, can he?
So...spring football starts soon.
And spring break is next week (if you're in college).
If you are indifferent to both of those I am so sorry, I have nothing to help you.
I am so sick of the consistent lack of energy on this team. Come out playing like shit, get a 14 point lead, and get flat out worked down the stretch. It's not just who we lost to, it's how common this lack of effort takes place. I'm taking the next3 games off. See you all for the big ten tourney. I hope we win, but I can't handle getting this pissed twice per week every week.
This is usually the point in the hoops season where I say, "Whoops, at least we're awesome in hockey." I can't even say that this year.
Pointless as no one will read these comments and just post their own depressing thoughts, buuuuttt...
The inability of anyone other than Burke to handle the ball is becoming an issue. The pressure defense killed us; even Burke struggled to get around the double team up top.
Defense was atrocious all fuggin' game..what's new, right? We rely on help too much which I think throws all or our rotations off; it's not that they don't rotate, it's that the on ball defense is so horrid a second person is needed to stop a penetration and from there kick out and dishes are made and succeed because at that point any rotation is already behind a step or two. I could be wrong on all of this but I've been trying to figure this bad defense out. Their slow, also, which, applies to the aforementioned.
Couldn't agree more. The ability of other teams to seemingly steal at will is starting to really become an issue. We definitely need more competent ball handlers(a reason for the Trey Spike rotations perhaps). I think everyone has seen on tape that Michigan just cannot handle pressure and they're all starting to apply it. This is the second year in a row that the offense has BADLY regressed, if it's a trend next year I think some questions need to start getting asked. What sucks is we just got our hopes back up after the Illinois game and the Indiana loss which makes this worse. Did something in this team just fundamentally break when Wisconsin hit that miracle three, I'm starting to think so. Maybe there's just a sense that the world is against them and they're tired of fighting it, which might be why they gave up in this game.
On the whole I am done watching the team this year, as a four game losing streak and early round exit feel pre-ordained now and quite frankly I hate rooting for teams that visibly quit. For those of you with the intestinal fortitude to keep watching, bless you and you are better people than I.
The effort is a thing of concern, I agree. I don't think they quit, though. You MAY be on to something about the "them against the world" notion. Fighting that and giving in may not necessarily equate to quitting. I would strongly suggest not giving up on these guys. Sure, take Sunday off, keep the emotions away from watching the Sparty game. Take next week off against Purdue, too. I'd say come back for the Indiana game but at the least come back to these guys when the play in Chicago in two weeks. Will they continue to struggle? Maybe. Maybe not. If the effort still isn't there/back after taking a week or two off, I'd agree that it wouldn't be worth a fan's time and emotion to watch. Don't give up, though.
Snowflakes are supposed to be unique and pretty but these snowflakes are all filled with anger and hate. My mom lied to me.
Fuck everything. Just threw a chair.
There is no chemistry out there. The coaches have made us a one-man team. "Give it to Burke". It's Burke and then the rest of them, not a unified group. I feel like the other guys on the team are looking forward next season when Burke's gone.
Not a fan of these guys at all right now. Let's hope somebody figures it out before all is lost.
so whens the spring game?
Not soon enough.
Lack if defense loses championships
This game was awful. But I can't say this year is as disappointing as all those Amaker teams that couldn't even make the tourney.
Here are the final shooting percentages...
From the standpoint of effective FG%, it was extremely competitive. Indeed, we bested Penn State for offensive rebounds (14 to their 9) and total rebounds (37 to their 27). The two things that jump out in the stats are this - Penn State had more steals and we committed more turnovers. We also sent them to the line quite a bit - 27 FT attempts to our 20.
Thanks. Was just going to take a look at this info. myself. TO's hurt. And Burke had 6; very unorthodox (though one was charge and one was off a steal he made and wasn't able to get a "good" handle on the ball). 50% 3 pt. shooting from them is our lackluster defense. Sending them to the line was partially due to said lackluster defense; a few bad calls scattered in there but not as many as many here think.
#1 seed in the NIT?
The team that wanted to win more won. That is a problem. Penn St. isn't playing for anything but pride. Maybe if Michigan played for pride they wouldn't be in this embarrassing mess. No defense, no hustle, no rebounding. Apparently, now not taking care of the basketball. Glenn Robinson can do nothing but dunk the ball. He can't shoot. He doesn't want to shoot. He can't defend. Stauskas shouldn't even play his defense is that bad. Considering the stakes and what happened last night with Indiana, this is one of the biggest disappointments I have had with Michigan basketball in a long time. How can a young team regress this much. The Michigan team that went out and beat the shit out of Minnesota on the road 5 weeks ago was much better than the current outfit. If Michigan played Penn St. in early January, we would have won by 20. I am disgusted with how a team gets worse over the course of a season.
No defense, refs stunk, no chemistry or discipline!
Michigan's getting progressivly worse!
On a side note, I realize our defense was awful, but Penn State shot 10-20 from 3 point range. WTF.
When their wide open looks, as the douche-bag broadcaster said, they should make 90% of those types of looks. They made 50%, which not 90%, but enough to embarass the defense, deservedly so.
The ghost of Sandusky rose up with around 10:00 minutes left in the game and struck us in the ass
And I thought the loud slapping noises were Trey getting hacked.
Why were we hedging hard on ball screens when they killed us last game doing that? Did the coaches not watch tape of the last game? Ugh...
The undervaluing of Zack Novak has never been more apparent. I'll take last years team over this one at this point.
I started watching in the second half....we had a 14 point lead....
that my snowflake post was deleted, but seriously, don't just copy my title...
As for the loss, I'm going to get so much shit for it.
These threads are a convenient way to collect all the banhammer fodder in one place

Very disappointing but I'll stand by them and keep believing.
Four garunteed games left. Have to try to make the most of them.
He was one of my favorites, and I think he helped bring us back to prominence. And now it feels that despite those feelings I may have underappreciated him.
Was he really the guy that held the defense together?
I walk away front the tv for a few moments and bam. Chalk that up as the first BAD loss of the year (even if it was to a BIG team on the road). The upset but strikes again...uh.
This is all my fault. I thought a win was a foregone conclusion...even when I read the preview and read how they were the WORST team in the league...without a win...I still chose not to watch the game (via tv, streaming, or elsewise), nor did I listen to the game. I have chosen poorly it seems.
You can blame me.
I wish I hadn't watched that game.
Was full of shit.
It's very possible we lose out. That's, scary.
I layed down with my daughter thinking we had won and woke up to this shit. I didn't see the end to know what happened but we are in deep shit right now...
I don't want to hear about youth, this team looks apathetic and as bad as the defense has been I am wondering what these guys practice...
Should have worn sleeves...
Everyone get your buttholes ready for sunday because it's not going to be pretty. I can't fucking wait.
at least duck dynasty is new tonight
Happy Happy Happy!
gonna say it's Appalachian State bad, but it's bad. We blew a 15 point lead to a team that had lost its last 18 B1G games. This hurts my head.
Despair and drink
Drink and despair.
Y R U ONLY GOOD AT SOMETIMES BASKETBALL?
where's the countdown clock for football season?
IU has four losses to unranked teams this year. None of them were this bad, but still. Silver lining?
Those are respectable teams they lost too. Lots of solid unranked teams out there.
I'm in shock. Disbelief.
84 points to a team that hadn't won a conference game all season. Sickening.
I really thought this team could be special. I knew we were young and our D was questionable, but I still thought we could go places.
Maybe this team gets their shit together for March but I just don't see it happening anymore. Not after tonight.
Yes we do. 4 seed at best.
Well gee whiz guys.
There is NOOOO excuse. They just gave up 85 points and lost to 0-14 Penn fuckin' State. I'm done wasting 2+ hours of my day and having my blood boil while wasting it.
play with their head, CHAMPS take a three at the appropriate time. CHAMPS ....next year ????
Burke nor Hardaway are NBA ready sorry.
Beilien is a great recruiter. I've said all the positive things I can say about him right now.
Beilein played horrible defense the entire game. And don't get me started on his poor decisions and turnovers.
Out coached, again. Spike ?
having a chance to win the Big Ten Championship to fighting for the 4th and 5 seeds in the Big Ten Tournament.
We were handed a gift last night and gave it right back to the worst team in the Big Ten who was on the basketball version of 'Gopher Watch'
There are no snowflakes with this loss. It hurts and it should for a long, long time.
We just got walked over like we were a high school JV team LOL. I wonder what is going to happen next week when Michigan State comes into Ann Arbor? Hopefully they dont bring us behind the tool shed again because that would suck. I don't know why this team plays with no urgency and plays horrible defense. The team lacks communication, and we do too much ball watching when trey burke is in trouble. Standing around waiting for burke to pass the ball is not an offense and when he gets you the ball we throw up bricks on wide open shots which is mind-boggling. It sucks to lose to the a 0-14 big ten team, but hopefully we wake up? At this rate, we will be bounced from the NCAA Tournament opening round like last season.
Hey now, at least we still have the hockey team and they're gearing up for their 20something-th straight NCAA tournament appearance!
Look at the bright side...at least we won't have the chance to be that #1 seed that inexplicably loses to a #16 seed...
To lose in the 1st round! Silver lining
Reverse Rich Rod.
I really don't understand why so many people think Beilin is a good coach. Once again we show how rigid our team is. No press coverage and not prepared FOR press coverage. We take our foot off the pedal when we go up by 15. We STILL don't know how to defend against the 3.
So this has nothing to do with the fact that this is a young team probably looking ahead to a big matchup on Sunday?
How many times are we going to hear this kind of crap? Lot's of teams are young, and besides, we aren't THAT young. We have quite a bit of experience in our starting lineup, and two top 100 freshman. We've played shiity defense the entire season, and we've beat one good team in Big Ten play. This team was massively overrated from the start, and we're finally seeing it.
I'm not excusing anything, but we are that young.
No senior gets minutes.
Two juniors get minutes.
1.2 sophomores get minutes.
The rest is freshmen. We have something like the 330th oldest team in Division 1.
Well it sure sounds like you're excusing things.
Defense, wut dat mean?
Maybe the fact that Bartlestein was selected as the only Captain is an indicator of the lack of leadership...
I expect more of the same Sunday and when IU comes to town.
The refs had very little to do with this. That game is all on Michigan...
The refs definitely did not screw us tonight. Not even close. Nice try.
I thought the officiating was pretty one-sided. However, when it gets to a point where you're bitching about the officials against PSU, you've got other problems.
but really this team has too much talent to be losing a game like this... Credits to John Bielien, but all signs now point to him in the case of problems. No adjustments is absolutely absurd.
Ok, that was painful. However, everything is ok. This was supposed to happen. This year has been crazy in college basketball. Teams losing left and right. It happens. This game was Trey Burke's karmic retribution for committing to Penn State and then decomitting to us. He had six turnovers and didn't play his best game. Also, I fucking hate penn state but if I can step back for a minute, I see a team that was 0-14 in the big ten and on senior night, brought their a game. Good for those seniors. 0-14 and then this upset win, that's a feel good story. So, as much as that game infuriated me to the point of fridge punching, it's ok. We will be ok. Beat MSU!
You must be drunk man with this statement. I would be to after what just happened.
Stay calm and this was suppose to happen??? Ahhh...no it wasn't. Sure Beilein would say the same...penn state had one big ten win now.
Well pardon him for trying to be positive after a huge letdown.
I'm at work so I just found out. Wow...just wow. It's like this team just doesn't care right now. I have feeling Sunday is going to be really shitty.
This is a very good basketball team that also looks like it can get beat by anyone fielding five lucky golden retrievers
Save your twitter apologies Hardaway!!!!! We ain't buying it. You lost to the shittiest team in the Big Ten.
No defense, no rebounding, no heart/extra effort!!!
I love u of m but this should not of happened.
I think you missed a "have" in there...
Thanks. I phone and to pissed to type.
Let's all head over to Seth's and ring his neck. And I want my $19.95 back from Kenpom! He doesn't know shit.
Edit: wring. And I'm kidding (sort of)
Just finished watching the recording because i got out of work late.I chalk that up to a lot of lucky shit. Did they miss more than 1 shot in the last 10 minutes?
Look...it's bad, but it's not "move us down 3 seed lines" bad. We'll be at worst a 3 seed. They're playing like crap on the road cause they can't handle the pressure. The tournaments are on (somewhat) neutral court. We should be ok.
I disagree. I think they pretty conclusively proved that they should be moved down at least three lines, you just can't lose to a terrible team like that and not get punished. Add in the trend which makes this team very likely to lose the next three games and bow out early in the Big Ten tournament and I'd say 5 or 6 seed to end the year is a realistic expectation.
Dude, tonight was a neutral court. More or less. The Bryce Center is NOT, I repeat, NOT an intimidating place to play. This was effectively not a road game, at least not in the atmosphere sense. Did you see their student section? There were maybe 50 kids there.
If this team can't handle the pressure of that court, they sure as shit can't handle one in the tournament, when they'll be playing solid teams every night. Not the hapless, desperate, nothing-to-lose mentality one we just saw win tonight.
The No. 5 seed will play against No. 12 Penn State in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.
I'm telling you, home court means EVERYTHING in the Big Ten. In case you forgot, IU lost to Minny last night.. so it's not like Michigan is the only team underperforming right now.
Still can't tell how Michigan is going to do on neutral court.
But yeah, It's a little disturbing at times, idn't it?
Penn State is garbage, usually.
But tonight, they shot 50% from 3, for 30 points. Tonight was also a rare game in which we committed 10 fouls in 12 minutes <-- these two stats are all you need for an upset. 27 trips to the foul line gives you an opportunity to score up to 49 points. 49 + 30 = 79.
79 points simply off of getting to the foul line and making 3s.
And there's no such thing as 3 point defense. It's random. So stop running your mouths about defense. It just so happens that every team gets hot at the 3 line against us.
Three point defense is only random if you play it. I don't think KenPom or Brian or anyone with functioning eyeballs would say that if you leave scholarship athletes open or don't close out or don't raise your arms in the air that that increase a teams likelihood of making threes.
It is easy to get hot against teams that don't guard you.
Just keep telling yourself that all these poor shooting teams are getting lucky against us.
Stauskus is one of the worst road players I have ever seen. I dont care that he shot the ball well tonight, his turnovers were making me rip my hair out. Everytime he is even close to pressuered, he just throws it away. 5 TOs to 1 Assist tonight, absolutely terrible. He is just so flustered on the road, so nervous. I dont want to hear any excuses about being a freshman either.
Can you believe we thought this team was comparable to the Fab 5? ONE thing that sets the Fab 5 apart: they played each game like it was their last. That one factor is the difference between two consecutive championship game appearences, and a loss to the only winless team in conference play. I hate to say it, but Beilein has taken this team as far as he can...he doesn't know what to do know. I think lining up a replacement or getting some better assistant coaches is in order. Beat State.
my first thought tonight as we blew a chance at the title by not showing up against a vastly inferior opponent on the road, was the @northwestern game the fab five blew to ensure that they never won anything.
i love the fab 5. but they took nights off too.
I would take a Sweet 16 trip in a second. But I don't think they win 4 more games this year.
But we are Michigan for better or worst. Frustrating young team. Go Blue!
IU, Florida, PSU, Miami (yes, that Miami)
We out rebounded them 38 to 26. The problem was we the turnovers were 15 - 9 against us and Burke had 6!
The big difference was three pointers. We both shot 20 - we made 5 and they made 10.
Time to regroup...Crisler better be rocking on Sunday. Go Blue!
Unfortunately, I see Chrisler being pretty subdued. I think this loss has really shaken peoples faith and enthusiasm in the team. If they start out poorly against MSU(and they will) I think the crowd(which is naturally subdued anyway, let's be honest) goes away along with home court advantage.
We're not the #1 team in the nation. We're probably not even in the top 5. However, as ugly as that game was I still think we're a Top 10 team.
We are undefeated at home and on neutral courts. All our important games coming up are played at home or on neutral courts. We're no longer going to be considered for a #1 seed, and we're no longer B10 Title Contenders, but a good finish to the regular and B10 tourney season will get us a #2, or #3 seed at worst. PENN STATE was the worst possible loss but I think we play angry and beat MSU. Purdue and IU will be challenges. Defense is not a question mark anymore. It's a huge problem.
This team just doesn't want to play angry. After that blowout against Michigan State, they should have came out and destroyed Penn State. Instead they let them play too close at home. Then the team plays them in a rematch on the road and loses with no defense and too many turnovers.
Is no way in hell this team beats MSU, no way.
I guess we shouldn't even show up.
Might prefer a forfeit over what the alternatives appear to be at this point.
I think a large number of Michigan fans still care more about the effort than the result. I know I do. We should be a frighteningly good perimeter defense. Instead we are terrible. Since we have long athletic perimeter players the explanation is simple - lack of effort.
I feel like I am watching my 8 year old play. He thinks he's playing hard and he's really playing at about 60%. I pull him aside and talk to him about it and he says he totally understands. He then goes out there and plays at....60% and acts surprised when I tell him he was playing the same way. At some point it is up to the players to decide how much they want it and to actually leave it on the floor. Tonight not one player left it all on the floor. When the entire team does that, they lose in the most embarrassing defeat if the year.
passion and hustle?
Stauskas was awful with 5 TOs and only 1 assist.
Being mcgary, was parked on the bench, inexplicably, for the last 12-14 minutes. Instead we got Jordan I Only Set Picks Morgan.
Aaaaand here we go with a bunch of excuses.. This is pathetic, this team is not a top ten team and lacks leadership biiiiiiiiig time, they gona loose in the first round, mark my word...msu will come in our house and embarras us again, im sooo pissed at this guys, hving the biggest fan base in the country and they cant even do us proud... Im done, football season lets go
All I learned tonight is that turning over the ball 15 (15!) (YES 15 TIMES WE TURNED THE BALL OVER) and the other team shoots 10-20 from deep, you're going to lose. It's amazing it was even close.
We should play well on neutral courts. Cheer up guys.
Season pissed away right there. Unless Michigan comes back to life and wins out, they aren't going to even get a first round bye in the B1G Tournament. Kiss 1 seed goodbye and maybe even a 2.
Get ready for an even worse foul disparity against Izzo. The stripes made sure that we couldn't touch their jock straps in EL. Remember Burke fould 3 and 4?
Oh shut up about the fouls. What are you, fifteen? Don't blame this loss on the referees, that is what ESPN.COM and MLIVE commentators do. I thought we were better than that. You already had one thread deleted.
And turn your hat forward, it's unbecoming of a Michigan Man to wear it sideways like that.
All confidence seems lost. This team had all the confidence in the world for the first half of the season, but they were not prepared to crash back down to earth. They have reacted badly and have regressed. This is on the coaches and the players. Let's hope this is the kick in the ass they need to get going into the NCAA tournament. It doesn't look good now, but this can be a great team if they catch fire. I'm keeping the faith. But today still hurts like hell...
Looked confident because the competition was horrible, pretty easy to see that now.
As the season goes on we look like we r getting exposed each n every way n if trey goes down we r screwed n look like an avg team without him... the one complaint I have had n have always had is michigan never seems to get a 6 9 guy or taller who can block shots n play good defense.. r def seems to look worse each game if we play like we have been we r gonna out 1st round or sooner.. we had a chance to keep a #1 seed n we blew it...
While this is a young team, when you have no presence down low, rely on jump shots and play a non pressure D, expectations need to be lowered. This team relies to much on Burke and is prime for a very early exit in March.
The current state of mgoblog right now. http://3432-boston.voxcdn.com/files/2013/02/beastmodetoinfinity.gif
In fairness, that guy up there did say he threw a chair.
But did someone catch one like she did?
for so many different reasons. SHE-HULK SMASH!
Has had an immense struggle in closing out games all season. There were several games early in the season on which we were lucky to escape. It's finally come to fruition tonight and that's on the coaching staff.
At least our expectations have become high of the program that we can feel disappointed when we drop from one seed and conference championship talk. I know it may not be what people want to think about -- I'm content to be a grumpy the rest of the night too -- but it's good that we've come so far, and to have so much on the line. A few short years ago, we were (kind of) like Penn State was tonight, nobody talked about us unless we had a huge upset, but now we're on the national scene.
Since complaining about the defense and lack of emotion has been covered, I would like to harp on how horrible the half-court offense has been (especially at the end of games - last 10min). Poor ball movement, no easy looks, and it's all on Burke. Is this team (especially the freshmen) just too worn down to compete at the end of games?
Sucks that our national title window is so narrow since Burke, THJ, and GRIII will be leaving soon. We won't have true senior veterans until 2016 when this current freshman class matures. Just hope Irvin and Walton can stay more than 2 years and we keep recruiting like we have been.
We probably wont see a team this talented for 25 years and that sucks because you just dont get this opportunity too often (Legit POY candidate with a solid & complementing rotation)
The main issue with his team is its lacks basketball leadership. Trey is not a leader. I Don't care if I get negged to oblivion but he's not. There is no such thing as leading by example..thats a cop out bull shit line for "hes just better than his other teamates and so I guess he is a leader" Trey is great, but a leader he is not.
Players who lead by example (Tim and Trey) cant lead young players into battle. Never have been able to, never will be.
If anyone disagrees..you likely havent played high level competitve sports with solid leadership.
This team needs an on-the-court leader like Novak who can inspire the team and manipulate its emotions, its ethos.
Many of you may be calling bullshit and point to Kentucky as a team that lacked veteran leadership presence as a counter agruement. That would be true but Kentucky had John Cap. who is perhaps one of the best leaders of young men that the College game has to offer. You may think he is a slime ball, but his players love him and his ability to manipulate the ethos of his team is umatched. ( I think we now all can see how big of a deal last years Kentucky team actually was)
JB on the other hand appears average at best....Beilin has the demenour of a professor not a general.
We need a general and until we get one...we will lose games like this
EDIT: This was not a fire JB rant..JB can succeed with much better player leadership
I disagree about not seeing another team this talented. In fact, I think we'll see it in about 2-3 years. This team was, and is, overrated. THJ is as streaky as they come, Stauskas is a freshman and garbage on defense, Robinson has loads of potential but disappears and doesn't have a jump shot, and Morgan is a mediocre big man.
... I don't think we'll have anyone as good as Trey Burke again for a while.
Well then I guess it's a good thing PG isn't the only player on the floor.
could be that good and Zak Irvin is as good as, if not better than, Gary Harris. We could be better next year than this year. Talent will not be a problem for the foreseeable future.
This team is good but I would hope we will see teams more talented.
Easy to be a leader of young men when your players have salaries.
This team remind me of the Bill Frieder teams in the 80's. Have all the talent but just can't get it together. I see us losing in the second round this year unless we get our guts back. Right now we are looking at being a 5 seed in the B1G tourny which will be a loss to OSU. We need to find heart. Lots of lots of HEART. How can a young team get worst this late in the season?
People are overrating our talent. How many ballhandlers do we have? How many shotblockers? How many tough interior defenders? Heck, how many good free throw shooters?
We have one superstar, a couple other guys who are really streaky, and a few other guys that give us minutes but aren't difference-makers. If the one superstar isn't at the top of his game, we struggle. Even when he is, we still struggle sometimes because we aren't very good defensively.
I never thought in a million friggin years we'd lose to that team. Something is not right. Obviously. Youth? IDK. We gotta fix it fast or we're first or second round toast in the tourney.
1. Fast start to the game
2. Out rebound us, which is not difficult
3. Defend trey
We are I trouble come tourney time if Johnny B doesn't start throwing some chalk and erasers around in that locker room....I would be telling Robinson to start grabbing boards....that dude can jump through the roof...grab us some rebounds man!!!!!
On rebounds. He watches the shot but does not always get his body on a man
well so much for big ten champs
But it's just one game... Michigan will get it back.
this made me so much more happy :) thank you.
this made me so much more happy :) thank you.
The team is a amazing and undefeated at home. The team is 4-5 away. Obviously our problem is that the team is so young, and hardaway isn't calming the team down when they're on a bad stretch and crowd is going crazy. Trey Burke is fantastic and consistent, but he needs to involve his teams a bit more. I know he has about 7 apg, but when they're in trouble he just goes to bail out mode. He might be hot, but the TEAM is ice cold and he can fix that if he helps them get good looks.
The team is not amazing at home. They just haven't played anyone at home. Sunday is going to be ugly.
Really? Good to see we're doing our job.
Stay classy, Happy Valley. Might want to be careful when you post stuff like this as a Penn State fan. You know, given your school's recent scandal.
First time poster, long time reader
Coach B is not incompetent as some are suggesting. This was definitely a crushing loss and this teams defensive liabilities and defensive rebounding issues are certainly challenges moving forward. But, let's remember that there are 5 freshman playing significant minutes for this team and this is the most difficult conference in the country. PSU had been terrible (they have improved recently quite a bit) and they don't deserve to get to be part of this positive association with the Big 10. However, UM did win several away games against the middle of the road Big 10 team and were exceptionally close to winning at OSU and Wisconsin. The Freshman have seemed to hit somewhat of a "wall", especially defensively. All is not lost here though, match-ups are going to be a key in the tourney and could be favorable. It does feel that this fan base may have become spoiled and we take these experiences, that quite a few big time programs suffer as Chicken Little moments. Coach B is a very good, if not great coach and will help this team to get better in the near future and the long term future. I hope.
Atleast we won't be the first 1 seed to lose to a 16...hooray?
So where is Michigan ranked if they can pull of the upset on Sunday?
Might as well ask where does Kate Upton flashing me rank on my list of life experiences. Neither event will ever happen so why waste time thinking about it?
didn't get a chance to watch the game, then logging onto mgoblog before I checked the score. I see a "what are you drinking thread", pretty self explanatory. Tough loss
Just make the Sweet Sixteen at the bare minimum.
January: the Illini come to Crisler and blow us out by 20 (second loss to them that year) and the game isn't even close. I was there and the schadenfreude dwarfed this.
March '89: Final Four; IL is a 1 seed, we a 3. Michigan wins.
National Championship ensues.
While this loss was a perfect shitstorm of missed opportunities, poor officiating, etc.
There is more BB to be played and March Madness is exactly that.
Do I expect a NC this year? No.
But I'll take this team's performance over most recent results.
I get your point, but schadenfreude is guilty pleasure. I can't imagine there was much of it in Crisler that day.
...you would have been amazed at the number of Illinois fans. Not only did it seem they outnumbered us, but they had better seats. That Michigan team was not highly regarded in the polls or by the home faithful.
So yes, there was schadenfreude o' plenty on that day at Crisler.
You are comparing a loss to a supremely talented team that went to the Final Four to a loss to a team that had lost its last 18 conference games! Do you know how ridiculous this attempt at "perspective" is?
We had the talent and believed we would win that game. Also, as a reminder that, even though disappointment exists after this loss, positive things are still possible for this team, dude.
I doubt that. If a team can't, or refuses to play defense... the odds of positive things happening, are slim, very slim.
Losing to '89 Illinois team in no way, shape or form compares to losing to '13 Penn St team.
Hmmm, let's see. Kenny Battle, Kendall Gill, Stephen Bardo, Nick Anderson compared to a team without its best player and ... Jermaine Marshall?
something positive from tonight? Nah, just a load of crap.
has greatly improved this program, doesn't mean it's unfair to question him. And right now, there's a hell of a lot that deserves questioning.
1. Does this team ever spend any time practicing against a full court press?? For god's sake, we couldn't handle the vaunted Penn State press! Every time a team presses us, we look like we've never seen this kind of thing before. With Burke at the point, there's no reason we shouldn't be making teams pay for trying to press us. Instead, IF we get it past half court, we wait for the defense to set up, instead of attacking.
2. Going along with that theme...our offense is pretty decent, but it could be even better. We should be pushing it upcourt every chance we get. That's when guys like GR3 and McGary are most effective. Off makes, off misses, we should be trying to push the tempo.
3. I HATE the way our big guys are taught to hedge and occasionally trap out top. We pick up tons of fouls 30 feet from the basket, and McGary and Horford are slow to get back to their man. When we do try and "trap" out top, it's the most token trap ever. If you're going to commit two guys 30 feet from the hoop, then go for the steal! Rip the ball away! Instead, they give the guy space and let him survey the court for a 4-on-3 advantage.
There's a lot of other stuff, but I just don't have the energy...
Miami lost to wake. It's sports anyone can win any day, that's y we love it.....
PSU != Wake
between our football teams inability to play on the road and Now the basketball team picking up the habit I am losing all of the hair on my head...
what a weak, pathetic, performance. We need to get our shit together fast. And with IU and MSU coming up this could go very poorly.
Our football team's road woes from this season are much more excusable than our basketball team's.
Not much shame in losing to two undefeated teams and the national champion on the road when your coach is in his second year.
...wait until you hit your 40's. You'll easily qualify tor the part of Picard in any off-Broadway Star Trek production.
We will lose. We have a bunch of lanky and young guys who don't get dirty on the ground. When you get beat down and hacked, you start executing and shooting the way we did the last three minutes of the game. I had a " taping" incident and only taped that time period. When I turned it in we were tied. We looked like the team that was going to lose and fulfilled that prophecy. Tired, exhausted, passive, not confident....after basically a week off. wtf. Unbelievable.
Chalk up two more losses heading into the Big Ten tournament, no first-round bye, probably a win then a loss, and a, what, 5-6 seed in March Madness?
This team was 18-0 at one point. They've either squandered the season or they weren't that good to begin with.
the gap between the top and bottom in big ten is close enough that even these obvious upsets are unable to avoided.
michigan had "it" in december but do not now. the important question, can this team be focused and energized for the important games coming up?
Penn State was 0-14. You can't possibly say that there isn't a MASSIVE gap between them and the top 1/2 of the Big Ten. This was a horrible loss and the team has earned the right to be questioned if they even deserve to be ranked. Exactly who has this team beaten?
