I was just informed by a long time Wisconsin fan that Wisconsin puts the Michigan football game in front of all others, we are their biggest rival. While there is a natural rivalry with Minnesota, they want to beat Michigan even worse. Interestingly enough, I had no idea that was the case. When pressed for the reason, it was because we were so arrogant for so many years when we were consistently beating them. My reply that "Michigan likes to beat Wisconsin but we have more important rivals that we focus on" may have been a poor choice of wording that somewhat validated the person's point. However, I still am not sure I really believed the premise beyond a single person's beliefs. Has anyone on the board heard this before? Is this true?
We are Wisconsin's biggest rival in football?
Are you sure you weren't talking to an Illinois fan?
What people often forget is that Michigan does share a border with Wisconsin. It probably means more to Wisconsin because there are more people that live in the northern Wisconsin area that is close to the border with the Upper Peninsula.
How about a neutral site game up there? That would be cool.
the UP is just considered technically Michigan by us here in Wisconsin. more packers fans then lions fans there and they'd be state fans not michigan fans when it comes to college
Say what? The UP is full of state fans and not michigan fans? From living up here my entire life, I would say that you are way off.
Not true about being MSU fans.
might've misread the MSU fan to MICH fan ratio; only been to Menominee, Mich as far as the UP goes. My point is that this is by no means a border war, it's more an inferiority complex left over from the lloyd carr/alveraz years when UW fans thought they weren't getting proper respect.
According to CommonCensus and my personal experience the Eastern UP has more Lions fans than the Packers. Also, Marquette, the biggest city in the UP has more Michigan fans than MSU fans.
Even the western U.P. (where I have some relatives) still has a decent number of Lion fans, although they may be in the minority. In all the other sports the locals support the Detroit teams. The NFL is the only league where they cheer for a Wisconsin team. It's more that they can identify with the city of Green Bay, being a small market, than that they care about the state of Wisconsin.
The UP is full of Northern Michigan University fans.
Tech fans. Go Huskies!!!!!!
I was born and raised in the UP (as a huge M fan) and went to high school and college in Madison. So I have a unique perspective on this question.
People forget that UW used to SUCK BAD. They were the basement of the BIG forever until Barry Alvarez showed up. I was at the game at Camp Randall when the students stampeded after they beat us for the first time in many many years. I definitely think UW wants to beat UM worse than any other team; just because it's a benchmark of their relevance. There was once a time that they never even believed it was possible.
Every other B1G fanbase Michigan will come in at 1 or 2 to every one.
I've been in Madison to see the atmosphere when the Badgers played OSU in a night game, when they played Iowa for first place (at the time) in the Big Ten, etc. The atmosphere with Michigan was as wild or wilder than any of them. Our colors make their blood boil. Seeing our equipment truck in the little parking lot at Camp Randall made them crazy.
You could not have stated it any more clearly, we are easily one of the two most important home games for every one of our opponents, and with rare exceptions we are Number 1.
This is why Michigan and OSU HAD to be separated for B1G divisional play. The rest of the league simply would not tolerate being in an "other" division that lacked both.
Everyone loves to beat Michigan. I am sure Penn State fans might tell you the same thing.
illinois fans are the worst.....blah blah blah we rivals blah blah triple overtime...... honestly have fun playing northwestern on a baseball field. just shut up and we will be taking your linemen and ty
I have to be honest, I went to the Illinois game this year expecting the worst possible treatment from their fans, and my friends and I didn't even get harassed once. I realize this is just a single anecdote but I gotta say based on what I'd heard I was expecting at least a LITTLE bit of friction.
I went to the Illinois game this past year as well and experienced the exact same treatment. No one really said anything. The campus was dead though. I sat in a section completely dominated by Illini fans and did not get harassed once. I was shocked. Maybe it was due to the fact that they were spiraling downhill, but everyone around me was really friendly and wished us good luck the rest of the season and a safe drive home. Cool story I know.
We dont even play them every season now
We never played them every year. They've never been a protected rival. It doesn't matter though. Everyone considers Michigan a big game.
But we didn't play them this season and won't be playing them for the next 3 seasons.
Is Brett Bielema's usage/understanding/thought process on calling timeouts
So I guess that would make us number 3?
A lot of teams feel that way. That's the reason that I don't consider MSU a rival. Misopogon had to post something about why it was important because people outside the state didn't understand why. Basically, the only reason it's important to win is to shut up the MSU fans. If I lived in Illinois, that would be the 3rd most important game (behind ND and OSU). If I lived in Wisconsin, apparently that would be the 3rd most important game.
I also have a hard time saying that the 3rd most important game is a rivalry, especially when the importance to Michigan doesn't match the importance to that team. The Game is equally important to Michigan and OSU. I'd also say that the ND-USC game is more important to ND, making Michigan a probable second. Other Big Ten teams saying Michigan is their rival is like saying you are in a relationship with a girl when you are clearly in the friend zone. If Wisconsin said that Minnesota was their girlfriend, Iowa was their girl on the side, and Michigan was a friend with benefits, I'd be down with accepting them as a 3rd rival, especially over MSU who for some reason keeps stalking us.
with your posting. Especially now that MSU stands in the way of making it to the big ten championship game, and since getting to and winning the big ten every year is our goal - I'd say there's even hightened importance of beating MSU every year.
I understand your thought that MSU is still the 3rd most important game, but don't tell me over the last 4 years you haven't been going crazy during the MSU game. I also agree that it's more important for MSU to beat Michigan than Michigan to beat MSU in any given year.
Thats because their year is (usually) based on that game. So I get that too - but especially in lieu of recent events (not beating them for four years) I would consider them a rival. Add in the fact that most years now we're gonna have to beat them to accomplish our "main goal" for the season, I don't think we can deny it anymore. I also hate Dantonio and his perpetual "piss face" - and after the shenanigans they pulled this year - I want to pound them into the turf every single year from here on out and put them in their rightful place in the state - in the back of the jeep in the carseat.
Edit: Sorry for the offtopic discussion, but couldn't resist. I hate "UCF" more and more each year....
The first year we lost to MSU, I was depressed because the streak was over and it was a depressing season in general. After the second loss, I finished off a quarter barrel that was approximately half full because I knew there were going to be some MSU fans I had to deal with on Monday. The last two years have not hurt any more than any other loss. In general, I go pretty crazy during games that I think we even have a chance of losing, so that really doesn't change how I feel about MSU.
Your argument that we have to beat MSU to get into the championship game is a non-argument because we have to beat Northwestern, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska too. I don't consider any of them rivals either.
I hate Dantonio too. I also hate the meathead known as Bielema. I also hate Danny Hope.
To me, MSU is more akin to Minnesota than anyone else. We're supposed to have a rivalry, we have a trophy, and it's fun to poke fun at their misfortunes, but I've never really hated them like ND or feared for my life around their fans like OSU.
Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion, and mine clearly differs with the coach's (although I think that would change if we didn't have to compete for recruits in the state), but I still wouldn't really consider MSU a true rivalry game.
Wisconsin: "You know, Michigan, we've done some really great, important, things together over the last few years. I just want you to know.... I love you."
Michigan: "Oh, thanks Wisonsin, I think you're great too..."
...that I was the egg McMuffin of football opponents!
Michigan has always been a huge rivalry. I was at the 93 game when they stormed the field injuring their own. I had peanuts, beer amongst other things thrown at me most of the game. Good thing I was wearing my sweet Michigan Starter jacket to protect me. I've been to every Madison game since with similar welcome.
fellow Dane County UM fan here. glad they finally upgraded camp randell those troughs were disgusting
Those were disgusting. I sit in the JJ section for the MI games which works out well because there's a bank of 10 port-o-johns right outside. Also have a tailgate just off the corner of breeze terrace and park at my parents rental property (across from the big statue of footballs that looks like di**). You'll see a stuffed badger that's been featured on ESPN and BTN that my parents set up. next time MI is in town, stop by.
I know exactly what statue you're talking about. I'll keep an eye open for the stuffed badger next time I go to a game there (a couple times a year) gotta tour the beer gardens first though.
We have enough fake ass rivals already and we don't need another one to jump on the bandwagon.
damnit I wish you were wrong
It looks like the middle girl's shirt says "SUCKS".
I wish they had advertised that well when I was in college.
and neither is with michigan. i suspect that if iowa or minnesota were to be as competitive with wisconsin as we are for a long time, they'd both be more important to badger fans.
Michigan has two trophy games as well, and neither of those teams we consider to be major rivals.
MSU is a major rival.
We only have one major/arch rival and that is OSU. If you lose to OSU and win the Big Ten Championship, I don't think you can consider the season successful. I don't think you can say that about any other team.
talk to me next year after we win the b1g if we don't beat msu
Making a note now.
Minnesota sucks, but don't belittle the Little Brown Jug.
your post. sparty has ever been a rival in anything.
If by rival they mean we play in the same conference and they beat us once in every five tries, then yes, I guess Wisconsin is our rival.
yes, my sister and brother-in-law went to wisconsin and all they ever talk about is wanting to beat michigan. technically their biggest rival is supposed to be minnesota, but no one cares about minnesota.
So the next three seasons for them are really going to suck. Honestly, given how many times MSU has fucked up Wisconsin's football/basketball seasons in the past few years, I can't imagine how any Badger fan doesn't hate Sparty with the power of a thousand suns.
my badger friends hate Sparty ... I just tell them "I understand."
Many teams feel that way, despite 2008-2010.
It took Wisconsin 100 years to be relevant in football and when they became relevant, they still struggled to beat us. Two of their Rose Bowl teams under the great Ron Dayne couldn't beat us. We were 22-3-1 all time at Camp Randall Stadium until 2005. Ever since, it's been rough.
Illinois is very much the same except they were never relevant and we can still win at Memorial Stadium.
What is this guy talking about?? Everyone knows our biggest rival is Indiana.
Those bastards! BASTARDS I say!!!!!
Actually that's Spartus big rival. Remember they demanded it be their protected crossover game.
Wisconsin and Illinois can fight over the status of being our 6th-7th biggest rival
I think that Wisonsin and Ohio may eventually be the big rivalry in their division. But yeah, when you are one of the programs ruling the roost for a century or so, neer-do-wells tend to dislike you.
I've been to Madison a few times for our away games. Most people were pretty decent. Fun place to spend a few days.
Since 1981. By my quick count they were 11-15-1 against Ohio since 1981. This includes the Jim Hiller-Don Morton-early Alvarez years when they were just terrible. Even Don Morton snuck in a win, though, which led to the firing of Earle Bruce.
Before 1981, though, Wisconsin was pretty much a tire fire against Ohio, going winless in the sixties and seventies and not faring much better in the fifties and earlier.
Their win against Ohio State in the rain in '82 sent us to the Rose Bowl, even though we lost to OSU.
michigan is everyone's biggest rival. there's a reason that purdue playing at northwestern will have no one there, but when michigan comes to town, the stadium is packed (mostly with michigan fans, mind you). michigan is like the yankees of college football. if you're not a fan, you hate them, and want to see them lose.
after these last couple years my badger friends hate MSU waaaay more
I think that historically inferior programs tend to want to make it more than it really is. Wisconsin and Sparty are good examples of programs where the win against us would be iconic. To us, we just expect to beat them because we are, well, just better.
Now I realize that both teams were great this year and the last few years. But my point is that when you talk about elite historical national programs, Sparty and Wiscy are not in the discussion...PERIOD.
OSU is our biggest rival and we just like to beat Sparty because they are our in-state nuisanse.
Call me arrogant but this is Michigan.
Is this any surprise? Every other B1G school considers us or Ohio State their biggest rival. Probably moreso us, due to the perception that we're arrogant and live in our own world.
The Badgers in particular seem to have a visceral hatred for Michigan. I roadtripped to Madison for the '01 Wisconsin game, and the reception that we got there was by far the worst of any other B1G campus I had traveled to for a road game (even worse than Columbus or East Lansing)
I can't believe I hear so much talk about rivalries that include the word arrogant. Every fan that loves their schools athletic programs are arrogant. What makes everyone think Michigan fans hold the market on arrogance. If arrogance is enjoying a winning program, count me in. I am proud of Michigan's athletic programs and the fact they do well in just about every sport. We are suppose to be proud. But MSU, tsio, PSU, Florida and all the rest like their school. Why is it we aren't allowed to enjoy the winningest football program in college football without being called arrogant. MSU is more arrogant because they think they are better because they beat us 4 years in a row. Talk to me when the series ends up in their favor. I'm arrogant.
When I had just started my current job and my boss learned that I was a big college football fan, he told me that his brother also loved college football, but that he would probably hate me because "he graduated from one of your alma mater's rivals." Assuming that he would say Ohio or ND or MSU, I asked which rival. He replied, "Purdue." I expressed some surprise and told him that we didn't really consider Purdue a rival. He said, "Well my brother hates Michigan and considers them a huge rival to Purdue. He says that Michigan guys act as if their farts smell like lilacs."
In my experience, "arrogant" is code for "has better academics than us." Look at the schools that get that label: Michigan, Northwestern, Stanford, Notre Dame, etc.
Is saying "they're better athletically and academically than we are."
Teams (or fanbases) who (probably) consider Michigan their top 1 or 2 conference rival:
- Illinois (for some reason)
- Wisconsin, apparently
- notre dame (after USC)
Hated, yes, but not really a rival, and even the other team would admit as such:
Give Nebraska some time. I have a feeling we'll be climbing up their list in the coming years.
Yeah, Nebraska will move into the first group soon enough since they're in our division. But given that their pedigree is more or less on par with Michigan's, that soon-to-be rivalry is much more mutual than the other ones. Nebraska will come to replace Penn State as our #3 conference rival.
Wisconsin also apparently considers Nebraska a big rival. When the realignment discussions were ongoing, Wisconsin made it known that they wanted an annual game against Nebraska.
Wisconsin fans treated Nebraska fans so poorly when they visited, they may be gunning for that rival spot.
Of course once Nebraska goes to Columbus, Wisconsin fans will need a new tactic.
According to Kegs N Eggs, Iowa hates us as well.
I don't think I've ever actually met anyobdy who attended the University of Iowa. I'm skeptical that it exists. My theory is that we invented it when we concocted a resume for Mary Sue Coleman (who is obviously a cyborg created at the Life Sciences Institute). The man we know as "Kirk Ferentz" is secretly an actor employed by the University of Michigan, which explains his friendship with Lloyd Carr.
We're through the looking glass here, people.
I found their Midwestern charm to be a little deficient
For some unexplained reason, all my Badger and Illini friends seem to dislike Michigan much more than any other Big Ten opponent. I would expect tOSU to replace us as Wisky's biggest rival based upon conference alignment.
it seems to me in the last 2 years or so that tOSU has earned the badgers' disdain even over Michigan. because, you know, they cheat & are horrible.
And while on the bus out of the Stadium there was a guy asking Wisconsin fans about their school, and he asked who their biggest rival was. Collectively, everybody said that Michigan was. They went on to say that the Michigan game is the most anticipated game on the schedule and a win over Michigan is a big deal.
Bielema seems to think there is a rivalry.
A majority of my ann arbor friends went to UW undergrad. They all enjoy beer and are laid back guys who all have put on michigan shirts to fit in at tailgates where we werent playing wisconsin. Hell ive done the same on drunken visits to sconny with them (which the gear came in SUPER handy this year when I went to the B1G championship) That said, they all came to ann arbor hating michigan and michigan athletics. My reaction 8yrs ago when I met them was the same as yours - wait, you think we're rivals ? Haha. Oh well, seems like lately everyone as gotten a taste of beating michigan and its drummed up old feelings ? Nothing we can do about it except WIN.
Ohh and 1 more thing: madison is a kickass town even though I always deny it to them...
I have many friends who are Wisconsin friends and yes, they consider us their "rival". When I meet Wisconsin people and say that I went to Michigan they give me some version of "ugh you suck, we're rivals" to which I obviously reply that we aren't. Granted, I live in Chicago so the UofI people probably just rub off on them.
Perhaps they never got over 2008.
As a Wisconsin resident I must completely disagree. Most Wisconsin fans I know dislike whoever they are playing that day... but they dislike sobreity more.
Id say Illinois fans hate Michigan more than Wisconsin fans.
What exactly does MSU have to do to find a rival? The Land Grant Game doesn't stick and ND could give two shits less about Staee. Hell, you probably need to remind Ohio that they have a game when MSU appears on their schedule.
Except that ND has beaten State only like 3 times in their previous 72 tries.
Exactly. Until this year, ND seems to be stuck in a malaise when they play State - probably because they shoot their wad against us the week before.
This reminds me of a dicussion a few months back on the good ole RCMB about who they should concider their rival now that UM football is not very good. And of course they all for the most part picked Wisconsin. Funny though, my Badger friends look at msu as they do Indiana.
I've told my Wisconsin friends your exact same comment "Michigan likes to beat Wisconsin but we have more important rivals that we focus on"
They don't like it. That and when I complain about their stupid WordArt "W" helmet.
we are everyone's most important game. This is Michigan, fergodsakes
It was my sophomore year in college, and we were playing PSU at the Big House. There were three PSU fans--grown men--standing next to me in the student section. For some reason, we were talking about Ohio State and the rivalry. My friend on the other side of me turned and asked these nice fellas what game on their schedule was big for them like that, which one they got most excited about.
My heart honestly ached a little when the guy directly to my right hung his head and said in a quiet voice, "We're at it."
My buddy's question was since and not meant to be nasty at all. Nonetheless, it broke this poor, grown man who had been so friendly with us the whole game. That was pretty much the end of our conversation too. I actually felt bad.
Michigan OSU is top 3 rivalries in all of the sporting world.
A Penn State fan should not feel besmerched that they don't get to be a part of a rivalry just as big... I don't feel besmerched when a nobel prize winner talks about their accomplishments just because I havnt achieved anything near that level
List of teams that see Michigan as their "biggest rival:
That doesn't include ND, which is definitely a rivalry game, or Minny for the LIttle Brown Jug. This is part of makes me laugh so hard whenever Sparty fans try to say their program is equal to Michigan's. List of teams that see Sparty as their "biggest rival:"
List of teams that see Ohio as their biggest rival:
List of teams that see ND as their biggest rival:
Fans of other programs might bitch a lot about the coverage Michigan gets, but when half of your schedule consists of "rivalry games," that is the epitome of relevance.
When I was in grad school at Illinois all they wanted was to beat michigan
I think you'd get a pretty good argument from a lot of USC fans on that.
If UCLA regains a pulse, it will revert back to them.
I had a roomate from USC back when UCLA was good. UCLA was clearly their biggest rival, their Ohio State. They felt about Notre Dame like we feel about them now - an annoying team you want to beat, but not your biggest rival.
and a lot of psu fans look at Osu as their biggest rivals (border war and such), particularly now that the streak monkey is off their backs
I think we should take it as a compliment whenever a team in the B1G says this because it means we matter and have historically been a benchmark in their mind. They have come here to Ann Arbor to try and best us and will often open chapters of their playbook that never see daylight against other teams, and when we travel, many teams have considered it the highlight of their season to upset us in their own house. It is a product of the impression this program has made on college football, and I take some pride as an alum and fan in that.
Wisconsin claims to hate everyone - in reality, they mainly hate Minnesota, but ghetto-stomping the wimpiest kid on the playground has lost some of its glory lately. so Bucky is pretty much hunkered over the mangled corpse of Gophey (or whatever the hell he's called) going "WHO ELSE WANTS SOME?!? srsly, any of you? cmon!! please? fear me?"
They have an inferiority complex because Bucky is an American badger, grossly inferior to most other types of badgers. Wolverines, being more badass than even the vaunted honey badger, is naturally the king of the heap and the biggest target. All this is why Brandon needs to get moving on the mascot thing. Bucky has been making mockery of us for the past few years.
/s (do I even have to post the sarcasm sign?)
On this blog? God, yes.
special reason that Illinois hate us? I cannot recall a key game the we knocked them out of the Rose Bowl contention.
I think it started after they fired Moeller and hired Mike White, who cheated and Bo knew it. Bo therefore took the opportunity to just horrifically blow them out a few times.
There was also the night game in 2000(?) when Henson returned from his foot injury and we won largely due to two egregious mistakes on fumble calls (Anthony Thomas ruled down when the ball had clearly come out and a called fumble by an Illinois back while his knee was down).
Don't forget the 1989 Final Four in basketball. It still kills them that we won the national title (and beat them in the FF) after they swept us in the regular season.
Minnesota is, and always, will be Wisconsin's number 1 rival in football, hockey and almost everything else. It's science. Also, that hatred graduates to Vikings vs.Packers on Sundays.
Paul Bunyan Axe trophy.
This is a 2009 survey of B1G fan bases that has a lot of information. One guess who is universally viewed as the rudest fan base...
Honestly thought the rudest base was gonna be Michigan State.
Funny - every one of the other 10 schools said that Northwestern fans were the most polite. Doesn't say much about their homefield advantage.
No surprise that not a single fanbase considers Ohio or MSU one of the polite schools for visitors
List of schools who consider Michigan their biggest Rival:
MSU, OSU, Minn, Wisc, Illinois, ND, Penn State.
Okay, so maybe not ND with USC (and Navy, duh) and all... but depends who you ask.
Makes you feel good though don't it?
Can't forget them.
Much like ND, it doesn't matter who you play, you will always get their best shot because you are UM.
We're not so and so's biggest "rival"...that's a two way street that involves history and great game. Are we the team everyone wants to beat more than any other? Yes. Because we've been beating their asses for a hundred+ years.
My experience with M football goes back to the 60's but I remember a lot of Wisconsin/Michigan games both home and away. At the time, Wisconsin had such a bad coach that the HS coaches would even counsel their good players to commit elsewhere (that is out of state). Anyway, as the Wisconsin fans remember it, we would come in and run the score up on them. I remember that the 3rd string was in by the 2nd quarter and the water boys were playing in the 4th. We would still be scoring in the 50's per game because they couldn't stop us.
What they don't remember is that tOSU would REALLY run it up scoring 60+ ppg! I don't think they hold it against them in the way that they do against us.
I lived in Milwaukee for 10 years and my UW friends would never believe this. They were really incredulous/offended when I told them that we didn't really consider them a rival on the level of tOSU and MSU and probably never would.
I was so grateful that there was a Michigan Club to watch the games with. My UW friends always got really crusty on the UM/UW gameday.
With those high school coaches saying don't go to Wisconsin, perhaps Michigan had been "stealing" the best line beasts, etc. whereas OSU recruited more within Ohio. Same thing with Illinois. It may be that we were so "arrogant" that Michigan came in and took their talent and then had the gaul to come back and beat them with it.
(Keep in mind that before Title IV, Bo could have 100 plus players on scholarship.)
Wisconsin went through decades of games like this against us...
Cool away M uni's. Mr Bandon?
I loved that '88 team - Demetrius Brown threw a great long ball, Tony Boles made the wickedest quick cuts without losing speed, Leroy Hoard was a sledgehammer, and John Kolesar was an earlier version of Jr. Hemmingway who could pull down any 50/50 ball.
They beat USC in the Rose Bowl. Enough said.
Milwaukee M Fan here
I hate dealing with arrogent badgers fans
after OSU, I hate the badgers the most, then MSU, then ND
I been to plenty of games at camp randall, hate the badgers fans
good tailgaiting though
Football wise -Michigan and OSU in their minds are the 2 biggest by far !
They all rock their ann arbor is a ***** t shirts and think its all cute
F those fans ! 2 years ago one of them talked some serious fowl language to my nephew who is 12, i had to let it be known to shut his fowl mouth and if he had a problem, id be more then happy to shut his mouth after the game.
I hate all wisconsin sports teams ( except uw-milwaukee)
Packers fans are Badgers fans are brewers fans are bucks fans
so basically, i live in Milwaukee, but i hate all Wisconsin sports teams
Their is a Lions / Red Wings bar in Milwaukee - it's called BBC's and its on North Avenue
They have every Lions and Red Wings game, and if you ask they will put the tigers games and Wolverines games on for you also
Just an FYI if your ever in Milwaukee
as for the guy whose parents have the tailgate just off the corner of breeze terrace and park at my parents rental property (across from the big statue of footballs that looks like di**). You'll see a stuffed badger that's been featured on ESPN and BTN that my parents set up.
I know where that is !
