We are looking at getting shiny helmets "like Notre Dame"--Jon Falk

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

So I was listening to the pre-game on radio this morning and they interviewed Jon Falk.  He was asked something along the lines of "well even with all new uniforms these days, we'll never see anything change with the helmets will we Jon?"  Falk chuckled in agreement but then went on to say that they were looking at adding a metallic element to the helmets so they "glow" like ND's did, but that it was difficult to add the metallic element to our specific colors. And that we "may see something new next year." Wait, wut?  First I've heard of this, snd I'm sadly not shocked, if true.

sweet.  I've been waiting to buy Michigan gear until they got a mascot and shiny helmets but now, thanks to the GENIUS that is Dave Brandon, i will relent and start buying stuff.

i wouldnt mind seeing the wings getting  just a touch of a super neon maze like color..not too much neon but just alittle some vibrant radiant color. looking just clean and like flowing with energy and greatness as we head towards national championship era..like how the rams went from yellow to gold..but not that bold just..looks like speed and superior mixed with a newness just for big games only..i am a die hard fan for 32yrs now since birth..hate if you want..tints of neon or some suddle supermaze color design..but dont change nothing else

If we MUST make a change, I wouldn't mind seeing us go with white base, maize wings outlined in dark blue, dark blue masks. I would prefer the numbers OR the stickers, but that's me.The general idea is similar to the Chargers' helms.

I would withhold judgement til I saw a pic of the metallic though.

He's just trolling the fans. Brady got a question about changing the helmets just last week on "Inside Michigan Football" and both he and Brandstander said you don't mess with the winged helmet.

I don't love the uniform changes that have happened so far, but they're tolerable to slightly silly at worst.  This, however, would be unacceptable.  A few things are untouchable, the helmets being one of them.  The fight song and touching the banner come to mind as well.  I would be extremely disappointed in the AD if he allowed this to happen.

Changing the helmets is as frightening as...

A big hairy man coming at you with a crowbar in an alley.

Fear level: 5/10 if the escape door is unlocked, 8/10 if it's locked.

I generally like to reserve judgment until I see the product, but I think it will be really hard to improve on the original.

For a quick effect of making the yellow more "shiny" I made a mockup. Here is the original first and the happy shiny one second. I think it would be hard not to make the whole helmet look cheap with "metallizing"

No.  I don't understand the fascination with all things shiny.  What, does the American television audience consist of a bunch of feeble-minded idiots with the maturity of toddlers?  Apparently so.  I don't need to see our Michigan players running around looking like a bunch of poofters with sparkles and gimmicks adorning a once great uniform.

No. Just No. This isn' ND. This isn't msu. This isn't Oregon. THIS IS MICHIGAN FERGODSAKE!! That winged helmet has been built by 75+ years of tradition and has become a instantly regocnizable symbol of our program. Let's just keep it the way it is.

You're such a kidder!

You gotta watch out for guys with his kind of sense of humor---you just never know what they'll come up with next!

I'm on the fence on this idea.  While I love our helmets and don't ever want to mess with our awesome tradition/history, part of me wants to see some iteration of a matte helmet.  I wish our uniforms would stop changing though. Enough with the yellow piping that seems to change from year to year.

I got an idea straight out of the kustom kar culture. First, make the blue out of 30 coats of metal flake blue alternating with coats of clear acrylic. It'll be deep and lustrous. Then you take the wings and turn them into retro '50s-style flames like it's a chopped and channelled '57 Chevy. To top it off, you create a Wolverine mascot, only make him look like Rat Fink, designed by Big Daddy Roth.

Doing this crap for recruiting purposes is utter horseshit!!!!!!

The top recruiting teams in the country and the No. 1 Team in the country for the last two years doesn't pull uniform or equipment stunts to attract recruits.

WINNING ON THE BIGGEST STAGES GETS THE BEST RECRUITS!   WIN AND THE BEST RECRUITS WILL KNOCK DOWN YOUR DOOR!!!

Alabama, USC, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma DON'T DO THIS. (Maybe LSU did it once, I think)

The uniform bullshit last year was downright embarrassing.  Gimicks don't get kids to sign with a particular school.  The coaches, the scheme and WINNING gets kids to go there.

I'm interested to see a mockup of the helmet, but I don't want to see us become ND or godferbid...Oregon.

Just wait until the Wolverine amusement park opens across from the stadium. You don't wanna miss pizza wednesdays or riding the elevated kiddie train peering over the field pregame saturdays. We gotta attract 'em younger and younger because that's what other schools do ... hey, there goes Mr. Wolverine Santa with giveaway cotton candy and pizza!
