WCWS Session 1 Open Thread (FSU vs UGA and Auburn vs UCLA; Live on ESPN)

Submitted by SpikeFan2016 on

WCWS is officially underway.

Michigan has to wait a long while until 9:30, but three games before that.

First up, #8 Florida State vs. #16 Georgia. FSU leads 2-0 going into the top of the 2nd.

Florida State has had arguably the easiest path to the WCWS; due to Utah upsetting #9 Kentucky, FSU has not yet faced a ranked team, and now the first ranked team they do face is the bottom ranked (#16) team. Georgia of course knocked off the #1 Gators.

I'm rooting for FSU here; Michigan has beaten them twice with ease/seems to have their number; plus it'd be fun to watch the SEC go 0-4 today.

Go Blue!

Wow, Georgia was just a few feet away from a Grand Slam.

Great catch by the FSU outfielder on the wall to prevent it. Runner on 3rd tagged.

Now 2-1 FSU.

Georgia still has yet to get a hit. A few FSU fielding errors have helped them out/both runs were unearned.

But UGA's pitcher definitely isn't looking as good as she was against Florida.

Why did FSU take out their ace pitcher who had only allowed 3 runs in 5 games....

She had only given up 2 flukey hits and no earned runs. And now UGA pushes two more across on her replacement right away.

Seems like dumb coaching to me

I'm kind of worried that we are going to get screwed with weather/timing. There is a strong chance of thunderstorms/showers throughout the entire afternoon/evening. As the last game, it would really suck to be pushed back to a very late night start and then have to play again tomorrow.

Yes, obviously.

That's not what I meant.

I meant we get a game that doesn't end up finishing till well past midnight and then have to play an Alabama or Oklahoma team tomorrow that got a full night's sleep.

Gosh, absolutely atrocious fielding on the part of Florida State.

Georgia's biggest offense has been FSU's defense. 5 errors. And a few that could have been errors but were generously ruled infield hits.

Georgia wound up winning 5-4.

Now Auburn is up 1-0 on UCLA after perhaps the most overrated pitcher in the country(?) walks in a run.

Chanting at the UCLA pitcher.."Throw it in the dirt..Throw it in the dirt!...kinda classless..That reminded me of a couple years back at the World Series Mich vs Alabama..We made a error and the Alabama Crowd was rather loudly chanting..Fundamentals!! Fundamentals! mocking the player.. I believe on the next batter Alabama grounded into a double play and the Michigan crowd responded with Fundamentals!...It was such a back in your face moment and it rallied Michgan and from that point forward Michigan dominated.....I like to call these moments..."Dont fuk with the babysitter" moments

parents can be some of the meanest and classless fans. that's a broad generalization of my experience, but combine that with the SEC, and there ya go. I had an interesting conversation with a mom of a *famous* former M softball pitcher. The mom shared that she tried to talk her daughter out of pitching (when kid was 12) because of how mean opposing parents were to pitchers. Luckily the kid really wanted to do it, and it turned out well. But as a protective parent, she saw how adults were flat out mean to kids when they were competing and learning. On the flip side, there are some great people too. I haven't noticed that from the Michigan parents, but it is definitely a culture in some areas.

The worst experience for me as a spectator is HS basketball...when there are good teams on the floor, it is embarrassing how the spectators (mainly adults) act.  If you want a complete nightmare, throw in bad refs, a playoff game (before states), and girls teams...ugggg.

There are no absolute rules, but don't expect that they will let the Michigan game start after midnight local time (1 am EDT).  Since they only have 2 regularly scheduled games tomorrow, be prepared for this Michigan game to get pushed back to about 2:30 pm ET tomorrow.
