WBB wins thriller at Northwestern, 70-68

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

In a game of many lead changes in the second half, northwestern hit a 3 to tie the game at 68 with less than 30 seconds left.

Michigan took it down the floor and Siera Thompson was fouled. She is a 91% free throw shooter and the clutch Freshman buried both shots to win the game for Michigan.

According to the ESPN bracketology, Michigan is the second team in the "Next Four Out" section behind northwestern. So this could be a big game should the Wolverines continue winning (currently 15-8)

After the hot start to the conference slate, they team has come back down to earth and could very well be a bubble team. Would be great if they can get in in a rebuilding year.

Michigan gets #25 Purdue on Sunday at Noon on BTN. Michigan beat them earlier in the season at Mackey for the second straight year.

Northwetsern lost?  I would have thought they would have been raining down 3's against us all game long, not just in the final minute.

That was pretty close to a must-win to keep their tourney hopes alive, and they pulled it out in exciting fashion. Siera Thompson had a stellar game, scoring a career-high 25, including 16 in the second half and the winning free throws. She was 5-for-8 from three-point range and nailed four big threes in the second half.

The bubble looks pretty weak this season, so Michigan has a chance at an NCAA berth if they can improve their still-high RPI down the stretch. Their road record of 7-1 is a real plus; I think they need to get a couple more signature wins, and they have four chances to do so, with games coming up against Purdue, Nebraska, Iowa, and Penn State. One note about Purdue: they lost their leading scorer to a torn ACL earlier in the week.

One good result elsewhere in the Big Ten was Ohio State losing again. They're now just 14-12 overall and have lost 5 of their last 7. They should finally fall out in ESPN's next bracketology update. A win against Purdue on Sunday could put the Wolverines in their place.

It is odd. It seems to largely stem from Ohio State having played a significantly tougher schedule, which has translated into them having a much better RPI than Michigan for the last several weeks. As of Sunday, OSU had an RPI of 42 vs. Michigan's 82. OSU's position in the field with that record and the Wolverines as one of the next four out with an RPI of 82 shows how weak the bubble is.
