WBB beats Illinois, 70-63; Cyesha Goree scores 30 points

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

For the 5th straight time, the Women of Basketball defeat Illinois, 70-63.

Cyesha Goree had an incredible 30 points and 19 rebounds. She is only the second Wolverine ever to score 30 points in a game, per @umichwbball.

This is a key stretch for Michigan as the regular season winds down if they want to impress the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

Right now in current bracketology, Michigan isn't even listed as a next four out team.

They will most likely have to win out in the regular season and make some noise in the B1G Tournament. Or they could just win the whole B1G Tournament.

The problem with winning out in the regular season is what waits for them in the finale--#11 penn state.

Remaining schedule-

  • 2/19 at Indiana | 7pm/MGoBlueTV
  • 2/22 vs Iowa | 1:30pm/BTN
  • 3/1 at Penn State | 3:30pm/BTN

Goree Named Big Ten Conference Player of the Week

After recording two double-doubles last week, including a 30-point and 19-rebound performance at Illinois, University of Michigan women's basketball junior Cyesha Goree (Grand Rapids, Mich./Wyoming Park) was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday afternoon (Feb. 17). It is Goree's first weekly honor from the conference.

Goree averaged 25.0 points and 14.5 rebounds while shooting 63 percent from the floor in Michigan's games last week against No. 21 Nebraska (Feb. 13) and Illinois (Feb. 16). At Illinois, Goree scored a career-best 30 points on 12-for-15 shooting to go with 19 rebounds. She is just the second Wolverine in program history to go for at least 30 points and 19 boards, joining Abby Currier, who scored 33 points with 20 rebounds against Notre Dame on Jan. 20, 1979.

Against Nebraska, Goree scored 20 points with 10 rebounds and a career-best six assists. The Wolverine junior now has 10 double-doubles this season.

Michigan's last Big Ten Player of the Week was Jenny Ryan (2010-13), who won the award on Feb. 19, 2013.
