Way too early 2014 NFL Draft Board

Submitted by Butterfield on

The value of this is probably nothing other than as a "conversation piece" as I doubt Eric  Fisher was showing up on these lists a year ago, but nonetheless, it gives us something to talk about in regards to who draft experts view as the top CFB guys this upcoming season.  It does take into account underclassmen declaring early so at least it's better than a list of only seniors.  Some highlights:

  • Clowney at #1 - because...yeah.
  • Taylor Lewan at #4 - scout says he has all the physical traits, needs to improve technique.  Can't disagree with that assessment.
  • Bradley Roby (OSU) at #8 - sounds about right where the Lions may be picking and a likely a position of need unless Slay gets the job done.
  • Ryan Shazier at #21 - 3 B1G prospects in the top 21.  Considering the conference only had one 1st rounder this year, I suppose this means good things for the reputation of the B1G.
  • AJ Mccarron at #33 - Ken Dorsey, anyone?  I see a winner and a solid intangible guy, but an NFL QB?  No.
  • Ka'deem Carey at #44 - I live out here in AZ now and this guy was electric in RR's zone read.  How his skills will translate to the NFL are a bit of a question, ala Steve Slaton.

Am I the only one that finds Roby undisciplined?  The impression I got from him, and from OSU fans, was that he never saw a route he didn't bite on.  He had a ton of pass break-ups and INTs, but I kind of got the impression that as more because the B1G had an absolute wreckage of passing offenses this year.  Dunno, maybe I'm wrong.

I was such a huge Ken Dorsey fan. It was an irrational man-crush. I thought he was going to have a great career. Of course, I was in 7th grade, so....

Having said that, McCarron is a much better pro prospect. He reminds me of Sam Bradford: not the ideal, Manning/Luck 1st round pick, but good enough to win super bowls in the right system-- and if you give him protection.

Off topic but I was happy to see quite a few San Deigo St players get drafted. I know Hoke can't recuit and can't judge talent but: Round 2 Gavin Escobar, Round 3 Leon McFadden, Round 7 Brice Butler. Expecting alot more in the next few years with Michigan as the brand instead of SDS.

McCarron screams "heady" presence on the sideline but not a kdi who can lead a team without all of those weapons and that line.  I mean, we've seen a muted return on Alabama RBs because (perhaps) that line is better than some understand at producing great seasons out of backs, and I've yet to see much with A.J. to disabuse the notion that he's not going to struggle in the NFL.

Good arm strength, reads progressions well, plays against NFL corners every week in practice and games. I could see him doing well in the league. He is A LOT different than Dorsey physically and moves much better.

Everybody knows Clowney will go #1. My questions is what would it take for you to trade away that pick? I don't think it happens, but many things I thought would never happen have. If you are a team that is Clowney away from winning the Super Bowl, do you bet the farm and then some?

The Lions will not be picking at #8. In today's pass-happy climate, it is very hard to go 4-12 with a combination like Stafford-to-Calvin. It took deficiencies at all but maybe 3-4 other starting positions as well as a historically bad season of game coaching from Schwartz to get to where they got. Hard to see it going that poorly again, even though they clearly aren't ready to contend.
