Way OT: UM alum in Joe Satriani guitar contest

Way off topic, but a college buddy of mine is in the Guitar Center Master Satriani guitar contest and could use a few votes.  I've checked out several of the guys ahead of him and, frankly, he blows many of them out of the water.  It's really just a popularity contest and it'd be cool for this guy to get up there, and even win.

His name is Que (pronounced "Q" or kyoo) Rhee and he graduated mid-90's in engineering.  Very cool guy.  I still remember jamming with him, totally butchering the lyrics to Comfortably Numb while he just killed the solos.

Anyway, to vote for him,

Like his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/thetonezone777

Subscribe to his youtube page: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCMimjbzsUE&feature=youtu.be

and follow him on Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/qrhee

You can do all three, by the way.

I believe it's called "networking."  Everybody is getting their friends to vote for them at this point, and telling those friends to give them exposure by having their friends listen.

"Vote rigging" is what happened a few years ago when The Allman Brothers Band begged followers on their huge mailing list vote for Gregg's daughter's band in a local contest on a San Francisco radio station.  Worse yet, the first prize was a recording contract, which anyone who has Gregg Allman for a father can get whenever he or she wants already.

I listened to Surfing With the Alien a few weeks ago for the first time in probably 15 years and I really didn't think it held up well.  Thin production, lots of wanking, no vocals, and not letting the drummer or bass player go off really makes it a snoozer.   I liked it in the 80s though.

Time marches on.

I have been playing guitar for about 20 years but this thread is not about me... other than to say that I would never, ever enter in a guitar playing contest.  Music is not a competition.  Who is to say which player is "best"?  Is Satriani better than David Gilmour?  I dont know about that one... Gilmour is not the technician that Sach is, but Gilmour can make you cry with only a few well chosen notes.

Here is a guy who is a player and teacher in Ann Arbor.  His musical knowledge is obvious with the way that he deconstructs a tune and builds it up both harmonically and with leads.  It is very, very tough to play in this style.  However, Id bet this guy would not get many votes in that type of contest for lead players...even though he certainly could pull it off.  This is a true musician check it out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwM7ypguOVA

A lot of these so called contests are just ways for the sponsor to get more business coming their way.  GC seems to lead the way in that type of promotion. Play for audiences, not contest sponsors.  Go Blue.

Satch is a wanker.  I have played guitar 20+ years myself.  If I wanted to listen to a wanker I'd go to the strip club.

I also agree on the competitions and voting contests.  I have played in bands and had many friends in bands that took part in these things and they are nothing more than advertisements for the sponsor.  BOO.  BOO I say!

I met Que in 1992 at Mary Markley and remember jamming with him a time or two.  He was fantastic even 20 years ago.   Glad to see he is still shredding.

Do kids today still say shredding?  Back in my day that is what every guitarist aspired to, nowadays I have no idea what anybody aspires to other than perhaps sexting their junk to all their friends.

My lawn, get off it.
