Way OT: Tron - Worst Movie of All Time?

Submitted by NomadicBlue on
So, before the showing of Inception that I saw last weekend, there was a preview for a new making of Tron. I remembered seeing it back in the 80's but I was really young and couldn't remember any details or if I liked it at all. So, I had the wife order it from the library so I could check it out (we just recently started getting DVD's from the library - it takes about a week on average, but its free!). After I watched it last night, I determined that it had to be the absolute worst movie that I have ever witnessed. I have seen lots of terrible movies and I usually enjoy them just for the comical aspect. With this, however, it was so bad it went right past funny and straight into painful (the only comical part was the outdated CG effects which I did appreciate). It was a complete trainwreck from which I could not avert my eyes. It somehow lacked all of the essential aspects of any movie - plot, dialogue, acting, character development, etc. Having said all of that - you gotta see this movie if you have never seen it or it has been 20+ years. Just to marvel in its horribleness. Go to the library, though. Don't pay for a rental. Does anyone have a movie they think might rival the pure awfulness that is Tron? I challenge you to name one! I know I may piss off some hard-core sci-fi fans with this one, but sorry. Its bad. Really, really bad. BTW. The only good part about this movie is that I now know where the image of Moses from South Park came from - those guys are pure genius.

Personally I think Tron PWNS NOOBS. It was my favorite movie growing up. Granted I was born the year it came out, but I remember popping that thing in the BETA MAX player over and over when I was young.  You are crushing my childhood.

The effects are pretty rad, at least give me that.

I would be really hesitant about that.  The movie today is still hilarious, so I think it has not become outdated yet.  You could still pop it in today and laugh throughout the entire thing, and I would worry someone would ruin be casting like Dane Cook or something like that.

Caught all kinds of praise for the intertwined plot and characters.  People failed to realize that even a cleverly woven turd is still a turd.  Don't marvel at it.  Just flush it - quickly.

I really didn't like it (and apparently I'm not the only one).  It was pedantic and obnoxiously heavy-handed.  The characters in that movie weren't actual people - they were crudely-drawn archtypes.  The fact that it won Best Picture (over a fantastic movie about tolerance, "Brokeback Mountain," no less) was an embarrassment.  Perhaps the Academy was making amends for not giving "Do the Right Thing" - a truly great movie about race relations - an oscar nomination more than a decade earlier.  Unfortunately, "Crash" was as bad a film as "DTRT" is good.

But I agree with you on Do the Right Thing.

Spike Lee's film accomplished everything "crash" set out to in a much better way. It was just a better film, and is still very relevant despite being an 80s movie

Paul Haggis

  • was born and raised in Ontario (and not even Toronto), and
  • one of his early writing gigs was for Diff'rent Strokes.

That should tell you all you need to know about his ability to accurately and sensitively capture American race relations.

I challenge your assertion by suggesting that the recent Travolta and Robin Williams movie featuring Seth Green signing to a Gorilla while being coddled in its arms was a little worse than "Gone Fishin'"

However, arguing over which one of these two movies is like debating whether getting stabbed in the left eye is worse than getting stabbed in the right eye.

Not as good as the Sarah Michelle Gellar/Selma Blair (UM alum) make out scene from Cruel Intentions.  Love me some mgolesbians.

It's such a fun movie to watch and laugh at.

If you try and take it seriously, yes, it's really really bad.

But it still puts many smiles on my face watching it.  So I like it.

Maybe I need to adjust my sarcasm meter, but did you really think "Schindler's List" was total shit? I thought it was tremendous (granted, I haven't seen it in about 12 years), and I feel like this opinion that it was a very good and moving film is one which is shared by many.

Also, randomly: I just recently saw "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," which I did think was pretty good, but, as with most films made from excellent books, not as good as the book. . . although that's kind of to be expected, as the book is told through the eyes of Chief and includes a lot of background stuff that they probably couldn't include in the movie unless they wanted it to be twice as long. Nicholson kicked ass in the movie, though.

With such lines as "I'm just a brother got dipped in the vanilla!" and other gems, this tale of a kung-fu fighting street urchin poet is so bad it's amazing. You can tell because the YouTube clip was made by recording VHS playback with a camcorder.

Epic win!

I think the worst shark-related movie I've seen is "Blue Demon"

It's about super-sharks used by the border patrol -- and they go rogue. Yep, really. And all the footage of sharks is stock-footage from nature films.

Another gem is "Sharks in Venice" featuring the peerless Stephen Baldwin

Cage and Meg Ryan. This movie sucked donkey balls. I walked out of the theater with pure hate coursing through my veins.

A movie has to be horrible to have that effect.

I thought Tron was great. Of course I was introduced to Tron at a young age, and it happened to be one of the few movies my parents had (have) on beta that my brothers and I would watch over and over again. I have seen a lot of crappy movies with way worse plots and story lines.

Besides, any movie with "The Dude" can never be considered worse anything.
