to play football, not to play trumpet
My friend actually named her cat 'Denardo' which was often shortened to 'nardo'
Forward looking and unique to date.
Now that is a true Michigan fan dog's name. Unfortunately, the name is the easy part. Getting the dog to watch the game with you is the impossible part. Every dog I've had hides when the Michigan game is on.
Have you told the dog that GERG is gone yet?
Lloyd Brady Hoke
Our labs name is Schemey...after Bo of course. As others have said stay away from naming them Bo as it creates confusion in its similarities to "No," and personally I feel it's unfair to your new family member. I've also heard to stick with names that are no more than two syllables as it helps with training.
Here's some prior board posts on the topic that may help as well.
Stole my name! My fiance and I have already discussed this, and the first dog we get will be called Schemey, followed by either Brady or Mr. Hoke and then Lloyd. It's a wonderful thing.
That is all.
I bought a dog last December and went through a similar process. The classic, and probably far too obvious, is Bo. After thinking about it a whole I narrowed it down to players that made an impact while I was at school. In conclusion, I named my dog Woodley
Additionally, for reference, I know for a fact that Shawn Hunwick's dog's name is Maizey
Hunwick's not bad.
My 1 year old daughter is named Maisey.. I talked mom into the name, but mom got to spell it how she liked.
Saddened by the fact that i cannot steal Woodley. That is a fine name sir... fine name
I think it's a humongous Rottie mix.
I'm proud to say my Woodley is a Chinese shar pei. I recommend everyone look up a picture of one in case you've never seen one.
"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog". I assume your sharpei is a total badass.
/this post references figuative fights and figurative dogs. I in no way, shape or form endorse actual dog fighting. See the picture of my 38lb lab mix below.
I tried to name my shar pei A-Train. But her being female and being out voted by the wife and daughter, I now have Buttercup. She wears a pink diamond studded collar. I fought for Victoria so it would be close to Victors, but lost that too. but she does high five after Michigan scores. If I give her a treat.
Our family went with Bo for our pooch. It was the better choice than his full name (Unicorn RainBOw Schembechler, clearly the kids had differing opinions)
Basically any of the former coaches first names.
Have to go with Fielding here, one of my favorites from Six Zero's The Blockhams. I'm glad someone mentioned it!
Former coaches provide great names - ours is Bennie, also a yellow lab mix!
Two birds with one stone right there
i named our dog Maddie Stafford. She is a female American Staffordshire Terrier. I am a huge Michigan sports fan (Lions, duh) and my girlfriend is a UGA grad. We were both happy with the name.
But I was really wanting a boy to name him Charles Woodson.
I do like Henne and Shoelace as options for you though.
Already picked out for MY next Golden Retriever, but I am in a giving mood and will let you use it... but just this one time!
Already have a dog named Brady.
Fitzgerald. Fitz for short... He's going to have a big year.
but I have a friend who has a dog named Rodriguez... and yes, he is named after the ex-head coach.
...hard working, wears his heart on his sleeve, but somehow doesn't quite live up to expectations. Still, your friend must love him.
That's turrible. Completely turrible.
What a knucklehead.
Nobody has mentioned Braylon yet?
Since it's a retriever, I think Braylon will be ok with that.
Hoke Borgeson or
Touchdown! (TD for short). Then every time you're watching Michigan play and they score a TD, your dog will come running, wagging his tail and join in the celebration.
We have an 8 year old Doberman named Woodson
I got a 15 month old red nose pit bull named Woodson too.
A relative of mine has tortoises and two of their names are Maize and Blue. So when they take, off he says "Go Blue!"
I had a maize tortilla once...and some blue tortilla chips!
the same thing 4 years ago with my Lab/Pittbull mix. I'm also a hunter and ended up picking Gunner. But the two names we were down to were Gunner and Runyan. I don't know but it seemed like a cool name for a dog but since my wife didn't know who he was she voted for Gunner.
Name your dog "Hail" and enjoy spending the next decade and change shouting the words to the fight song out your backyard door and your kids yelling "Hail" around the house.
My Aunt & Uncle named their dog Brady, primarily for Tom, but works for Hoke too. I guess "Gorgeous Al" might work.
is Maize and she's awesome. A great one I heard for female dogs (doesn't apply here, but general dog name thread info) is "Dezy" short for Desmond Howard.
Be careful with "Bo". It can be tough training your dog the difference between "Bo" and "No"! and you don't want the dog to correlate it's name to a negative.
And because who doesn't love a good dog picture:
That's Maize. She gave me a hell of a scare about 2 months ago when she got really sick, thus the stomach/leg shaving. I do have good news though as she's almost off the meds. Her 3rd birthday will be celebrated in style in a couple weeks.
I always dreamed of getting two dogs at once and naming them Desmond & Elvis. A man can dream, right? Anyway, I love "Dezy". BTW, great photo of Maize (another great name). Godspeed on her recovery.
"Wangler" and "Carter" would work too. Could always teach wangler to give and carter to fetch.
Thanks for the kind wishes, she's back to normal weight/behavior/everything. The question at this point is how quickly she can be weaned off the drugs.
This is a really big coincidence, but I am pretty sure we've met once or twice at dog parks in the Lansing area because I recognize your dog and the name Maize. I have a Siberian Husky named Deszy.
That's us. We moved to Chicago about a year ago, so that's why we haven't been around. And your Deszy is the name I was referring to above, very creative.
I hate seeing dogs shaved like that. It makes me pity them, I feel so bad that they can't do anything about whatever sort of discomfort they're in. Hope your pup is doing great
She's doing much better. The good news is when she got sick she knew it, and had no problem going into the hospital (she usually has some real seperation anxiety) and letting them work on her. She got a couple blood transfusions and after recovering the last 2 months she's just about back to normal. Her blood levels have actually been normal for weeks, they just don't want to wean her off the drugs too quickly and have her relapse. Thanks for the concern. I'm hoping she'll be off the drugs and can spend the 4th of July at the dog beach for her 3rd birthday.
I sense a new NASA re-branding campaign with this dude as the centerpiece. Priceless.
Is this on Youtube? Link? Can't seem to find it.
And call it Tshimanga for short.
I almost peed on the floor when I read this.
This absolutely. Shelter dogs are the lovable gritty walk ons of the dog world.
Taco Pants. He can go by Taco
We Go. That way he gets you beer everytime you call his name.
Can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet.
That's my dog! Although people usually guess "and the Jets" over "Oosterbaan".
Tripp or Remy would be great names for a dog
I currently own one named A-Train.
Not that this helps you with your decision, but my dog's name is "The Dude." We got him a week after Bo's passing, so of course "Bo" was a close second, but we decided against it as it just seemed like too obvious of a choice.
Unusual, but Michigan fans still get it.
See if Braylon can stop you.
Name him after me! Kevbo! Yea!!
for your first son, Hailey Victoria for a girl.
As for a dog, I like "Des" or "Red". Of course, he's a yellow lab, so that may not work.
But not after Welborn; it's because he was always underfoot as a puppy.
Then real Michigan fans will know you are truly committed to Mgofandom.
In honnor of our future QB. Pee-Wee would also be a good name.
Not sure what kind of dog you are getting, but if you want to ensure it's like a greyhound but faster, a bulldog but stronger, or a golden retriever but more loyal...well then you should name it Fred or Jackson.
my cat's name is Jackson. I'd say he's most like a tiger, but stealthier. he's got some similarities to a jaguar, except his power & climbing skills are even more promising. he reminds me a little bit of the lions at the zoo, but he really commands even more respect with his majesty & charisma.
and make sure you beat it with a newspaper.
Seriously, like a damn school girl
Make sure that when you do beat your dog, "Section 1", that it's with a FREEP newspaper...so that it really stings.
Too bad McGuffie transferred. That's a cool dog name.
So naturally, when we adopted a kitten this past weekend, we named him Fitzgerald Toussaint (Last name redacted). Now we have Ella and Fitzgerald, with a Michigan twist!
/cool story bro'd
Would be a cool name for a dog! I like Maize or Wheatley for the type of dog you are getting. Side note, my Schitzu-Dachsund of a year's name is Wiley Robinson...ya know after Denard. But my gf is a Yankee fan so I told her it was after Denard AND Cano...haha
I am a huge fan of naming my dogs after my hobbies. My last dog was named after golf, and my future dogs are going to be named Sarbanes and Oxley (I am studying for my CPA exam...) but I'd name my dog Novy, after Novak, Brady, or Chuck.
I'm no CPA, but I do systems support for a company that creates accounting software, and I have to hear and deal with the term "...because of Sarbanes-Oxley..." waaaaay too much.
Name him Stevie. In honor of Stevie Brown. It perfect for a shelter dog. Unwanted and unloved until he finds the right home and then all of sudden everything clicks and he's loved and respected.
name him Carl Grapentine, and always refer to him by his full name
But seriously, thanks for adopting and not buying from a store.*
* not intended to start a flame war debating the merits of adopting vs. buying at store, though there's really no debate in my opinion.**
** OK, that last part was more flame-y. Seriously, people, adopt.***
*** I'm just sayin'.
What about buying from a Breeder?
Not trying to make people feel guilty, everybody makes decisions for their own reasons, but three to four million (!!!) dogs get "put to sleep" every year in the US.... just sayin'. Not all are adoptable, but most are.
HBO's currently running a documentary called "One Nation Under Dog"; brief review in Washington Post-- just read the first little bit. It's sad.
I agree that adopting is a great thing. One of the problems with people is they don't realize a dog is a lot of work before they get one and end up dropping them off at a shelter. Also supply greatly outweights demand and breeders don't realize it.
I have an Aussie which is extremely rare to find In a shelter and I went a breeder that my wife works with. She doesn't over breed and makes sure there is enough demand before she breeds.
My Siberian Husky's name is Zoltan!
Therefore I think the best name would be our best player from Canada, Tshimanga!!!
from thier country of origin.
I currently have two english bulldogs named "Shine on you crazy Diamond", and "Bentley".
I have an Australian shepherd, which orginated in the US.
I thought about something aussie, then picked Manningham. The wife vetoed and now it's Blitz.
gave it away.
We adopted last year and had the same conundrum but a little different because our dog is a female. We ended up settling on Charlee Beau. The first name of Charlee is obviously an homage to the one and only Charles Woodson. The middle name... do I even need to spell it out? Just a more feminine version of Bo. Congrats on the dog!
We have always wanted to name our dogs with a UofM theme but never did. We named one Parker after Robert B., one Dylan after Bob and our latest (chocolate lab) Porter after the beer and/or the characters (lead and the dog) on Payback. Our next will be named along the lines of UofM so these responses help a great deal.
Edit: We live near Coach Carr's summer cottage and he loves my dog Porter. It is kinda cool to hear Coach yell out "Hello Porter", in his coaching attitude, when he walks by.
Crable, Gibbons or Mesko.
I rescued a female boxer, and named her maizey...she will soon be six..Go Blue!
James Earl Bones?
Michigan dog approves. Yes that's my dog, a 130lb Doberman that bleeds Maize and Blue.
I've had three dogs over the course of my life, one from a breeder and two having been rescued. Never again will I "pay" for a dog when there are so many wonderful dogs awaiting a home at a shelter.
Next dog will be named after my beloved NY Mets (Shea), but after that I'll too be exploring Michigan names. The lady loves the name Maizey for a female, but I'll be shooting for Harris (in honor of my favorite NFLer, David).
So Shea works both ways. You're welcome.
I have three Bernese mountain dogs, and they all have Michigan themed names. There's Harmon (for Tom Harmon), Mary Sue ( Mary Sue Coleman), and Hutch (for Steve hutchinson).
Hutchinson is not the member of the Michigan family I think of when I hear Hutch.
"Huckleby," and you can all it "Huck."
I named my dog Chuck, Chuck Wood to be exact. In honor of Charles Woodson.
Biakabutuka - probably the best
We got a Cavalier King Charles a few months ago and I held firm on Fritz
Chappuis (Chappy for short)
Didn't see Brady mentioned. I named my girlfriend-demanded toy poodle puppy Brady due to two obvious Michigan connections: Tom Brady and Brady Hoke. Bitches love him.
but that's a personal bias since it's our lab's name. I'll be looking for the Hello: post tomorrow.
We have a puggle named after the first legend Desmond Blue Howard or Desi for short!!
How about Brian for a MGo name?
Perfect if it is a long haired dog.
that if you could ask the dog what his real name actually is;
He'd tell you it's "Man Ray".
It's the truth, why would he lie . . . he's your dog.
Just got a German Shepherd and went through the same problem. I went with Charlie after Charles Woodson.
Woodson. It sounds so witty and classy.
Jolly Trgovac Woolfork* Haji-Sheikh
Messner Vada Hoard
Breaston BlackJesus Shazor
Not one person has suggesed Yost?!? Pathetic.
or Rin Tim Tim Barkabutuka
We just adopted our first dog from a resuce group, a 19 month old Maltese already named Millie. The wife and kids liked that name, so I can now claim she is named in honor of Millie Schembechler. If we work up the courage to get a 2nd dog, and it's a male, I'm going to lobby for "Bo."
it is simple, classic and one hell of a modle american.
