WAY OT: Best places to get an adult beverage in Cleveland?

Submitted by Helloheisman on

My wife and I are heading to Cleveland saturday night to hang out and catch the Tigers/Indians game sunday afternoon. I want to catch the wings game saturday night and visit some decent bars. Just wondering if anyone had any insight on this "issue" at hand! Thanks in advance

I haven't been to C-town for a few years, but last time I was there we went to a place near the Jake (errrrr, Progressive Field) that I think was called the Green Lizard (or something Lizard, anyway).

Yeah we all got food poisoning from that place, so stay the hell away from there.

I think it may be the Winking Lizard.  My sister-in-law lives there, and she and her husband are frequent patrons of that establishment (for the drinks, not the food FWIW).  I'll also second Great Lakes.  We watched part of Prior's meltdown against Purdue last year there as part of my in-laws wedding day extravaganza.

Needless to say I was in the bag when we were there so my memory's a little fuzzy.

It was actually a pretty cool place to drink and hang out after the game (Donyell Marshall's ugly ass even walked in at one point -- he was playing for the Cavs at the time), but when the 3 of us all developed the same symptoms ~24 hours later, and the only common thing we all ate that trip was the pizza from that place, it was a unanimous choice to never eat there again.

But I guess if you stay away from the food it still might be a good place to chill & drink.

WInking lizard is good, Paninis on E.9th + Prospect pretty good also. I suggest leaving downtown (cav's not playing + indians suck = dead downtown bar scene). If you have to stay try some of the bars on E. 4th, corner alley is pretty nice. Personally Id go to the West Park area, the west side of cleveland, and hit up West Park Station or P.J. McIntyres.

The discussion begins and ends with Great Lakes Brewing Company. Try the Burning River Pale Ale. It's tasty, alcoholic, and fortified with a skosh of I See What You Did There.

No question, bier markt by the west side market.  My buddy used to live above it.  Great beer selection.  Great vibe.  Second choice is winking lizard, which is a typical jumbo sports bar but they have a 'keep the glass' special where you get a nice glass for every one you order at regular price.  If you get lucky on the monthly selection, it's quite nice.  Half my glasses are from there.  The other half were stolen from bier markt.

I live in Cleveland, great lakes brewing company is great, kind of like Cleveland's Bells.  You can't go wrong with any beer you get there, Dortmunder, burning river, blackout stout is phenominal, they just released Holy Moses which they only brew every other year.  The nightlife spot in town right now is West 6th.  It's lined with all different kinds of bars/clubs.  The Blind Pig, Velvet Dog, The metropolitan, The Barley House is the trendy spot at the moment, but it's completely full of douchebags, lots of graphic tees and Tapout shirts.  The Cadillac Ranch is where Lebron had his birthday party FWIW.  My favorite bar is on West 9th, it's called the Map Room, just a low key spot.  There's nothing special about the Winking Lizard, I would go to either Panini's or The Clevelander if you're looking to stay near the stadium, they're literally right next to each other, they almost share a patio(there is also a paninis on west 6th, great food).  The Harp is a great place to go, great food, but its kind of on the outer part of the city towards Lakewood.  Also Tremont is just a cab ride away, Michael Symon has a restaurant there called Lolita which is unbelievable.  Michael Symon is one of the Iron Chefs.  He also has a restaurant on East 4th which is a great place to go.  East 4th is pretty much a bourbon street knock off in Cleveland, lined with lights and bars.

It was many years ago but there was a good scene down by the river flats when the weather was nice. I have heard its not like that anymore but I had a few good pints walkin around down there.
