Way OT: Any Canadians Around These Parts?

Submitted by mrider on

Delete if needed. Just wanted to see how many fellow Canadians are on the mgoboard. Doesn't seem to be many die hard Michigan fans (or college fans) in Toronto so I was just trying to get a sense of how many we got.

Goderich can be a pretty lonely place when cheering for M. There are some casual fans in the area but none live and die like I do on Saturday afternoons in the fall.

Random thoughts on being a Michigan fan in TO...

The problem with seeing people wear college gear here is you don't know if they're a fan or if their name just starts with an M, or an F, or an O.

Also annoying when I'm watching CFB (ND/Stanford) in a bar and it gets switched halfway through for a pre-season hockey game (when we all know the Leafs are going to suck anyway).

I'll never be able to be a TFC fan because their colors are red and grey.

Sports pack on Rogers can't be beat though (30 bucks a month for NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, NCAA Football & Basketball, Nascar, OHL).

Wow you hit a home run on pretty much every one of these points.

I used to shout out Go Blue when I saw people wear Michigan gear, that faded very quickly. Most people wear OSU and Michigan gear, occasional MSU gear. But none are actually fans.

Sports bars just don't care about college football. And highlights are even worse Sportscentre and The Score will show pre-season hockey, or training camp updates over showing legit college highlights. Kills me a little inside every time.

I'm not a true soccer fan. But TFC games are unreal, complete opposite atmosphere of a Leafs game. We actually kind of have soccer hooligans and most people are wasted for the games. I would assume TFC has best soccer atmosphere in the MLS.

The Super Sports Pack is killer, I had it when I was in high school at home, but once I moved to school my parents cut it from the package. And as struggling poor student, Super Sports pack is at the bottom of my list unfortunately. TMN/ HBO and HD take priority.

Go Blue from Toronto (during summer) and Guelph during school!

I live 20 minutes south of Montreal. Been a Wolverines fan since I was about 12 years old. Saw the winged helmet and that was it. I'm such a fan that I corrupted my brother and buddy who use to be Sooners fans back in the 80's. Unfortunately in Quebec we don't have Rogers cable. If I want college football package I think it's $80 with Bell. God Bell sucks.

I've known the guy I sit next to in the Big House for 15 years. Last fall I finally find out he's from Windsor. And his commute to the games is shorter than mine from Kalamazoo. And this is all fun and cool.

But then I get thinking...and start worrying a little. The Canadians float among us so effortlessly, if they ever decide to take us down it would probably be all over in a matter of hours.

I'm a Dual Citizen.

I was Born in Grosse Pointe Farms. Only lived in the Detroit area for 2 years of my life but my dad older brother got hooked. I was raised a Michigan fan and never swayed.

I moved to Edmonton, AB at 18 to go to a Christian Institution, met my wife and have stayed lived here ever since.

I just meant I don't live there anymore. But I do not like that we get classified as being "just like Canadians" - not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just that we have our own disfunctions. When I was in high school, our history book showed a generic map of North America where the U.P. was actually colored as if it was a part of Canada.

In eighth grade my world history book depicted the furthest advance of the WW2 German Army as being ~600 miles from Moscow, even though the peak advances made it to within 20 miles.  Also, I had a social studies lab book once that depicted the equator going through southern Mexico.

Good to see some Windsor guys. I agree with some of you that sometimes I'll see someone wearing Michigan gear and think go blue. Then a week later they have on an OSU shirt or ND. That's blasphemy. But the Americans here would be surprised. If you go to a busy bar in Windsor on game day you will see lots of Michigan jerseys and people yelling and cheering, there's some great atmospheres to watch UM football here, I like Johnny Shotz in Tecumseh, always tons of UM fans.

I live in Halifax, NS. I haven't found many UM fans here, except for my wife and our daughter. I've seen a few M hats and sweatshirts around town, but it's a pretty big tourist destination (for Atlantic Canada), so I doubt they were locals.

Born and raised in Toronto (Scarborough) till I was 12....then moved stateside and grew up in Michigan. Mother is a native Michigander so I've always bled maize and blue and cheered for the Wings (even over the Leafs when I lived in Toronto.) The only sports team that captures my heart like Michigan does are the Toronto Blue Jays....I was in the prime of my childhood when the Jays pulled back2back rings and Joe Carter nailed one out of the park at the Skydome (it will always be the skydome to me) Still get out to see my family a few times a year...they live in Scarborough (kennedy and eglinton) and markham.

Dual citizen now, live & work downtown Toronto.  My son lives in Atlanta, we're both die-hard UM fans and we have a UM football weekend bonding trip together one game every season.  Last year it was MSU, this year we're going with ND for the first night game at the Big House.  (Section 5, row 42 - thanks StubHub).

I rock my M gear walking around downtown all the time and usually get at least one "Go Blue".  Love wearing Red Wings gear to the ACC for Leafs games, their fans are so lame here it's like going to a Rotary Club meeting not a hockey game.

I get ESPN package on Bell for $5/month and the west ABC feed along with Buffalo, so just about every game is on a channel somewhere.  But it's fun to follow on Justin.tv sidebar with MGoBlog livestream at the same time also.  I'm down for taking over a bar sometime whenever you guys set it up.

GO BLUE!
