Way Completely OT: Hilarious mock soccer youtube video that I thought the MGoCommunity would enjoy

It's a slow, mid-February Thursday, and I thought the fine fellow members of this site would enjoy a video that I find quite funny as well.

and the link you provided is to a video that is OBVIOUSLY mocking the sport. How you found that funny is beyond me..........terrible OP, hope it's neg-banged to Bolivia.......

That video is quite amusing, but in defense of soccer, a lot of those floppers were cautioned or ejected for their theatrics (apparent in the video).  I have long held that the only reason you see so much flopping in soccer is because, if you pull it off, it can give your team an incredible advantage on attack (free kick, penalty kick), or bail you out if you've lost possession in a dangerous area.  In a sport with often limited scoring opportunites, and where possession is so important, these advantages can make all the difference.

Another factor is that you have essentially one referee making the final call on fouls that occur across the length of a massive field of play (usually 120 x 70 yards or so).  So, if there actually is illegal contact, some players will take a tumble or embellish to ensure the referee sees it and it is called.  Referees are also easily swayed by the reactions on the field and emotions of the crowd, and players know this.  When you see a player feigning injury, he is trying to get the offender carded, which can also give your team a huge advantage.  Also, since the clock doesn't stop (for anything) in soccer, it is also a timewasting tactic.

If all this turns you off to soccer, that is totally fine, but please don't call it soft (not that anyone did, but people do).  If you actually watched a match, you'd see these guys take some pretty hard shots and tough it out for the full 90, with only a 15 minute breather.  And also don't act like flopping doesn't occur in other sports, because it happens all the time in basketball, and increasingly in hockey.  The only reason it's not to the same extent is because it doesn't provide the same advantage, but whenever it can provide that advantage, you will see it.

If you want funny and soccer, I suggest you watch the satirical movie "Mike Bassett England Manager." I post on a Wolverhampton Wanderers message board and one of the posters suggested him for our open manager position. I watched the first couple parts that are on youtube. Pretty funny from what I've seen.

I like how you used past tense in the title to describe how you "thought" we would like the video.

That way you didn't have to change your title when it turns out no one did haha.

I was forced to watch the Donovan goal vs Algeria from 2010 WC just to restore order and allow me to function the rest of the day at work. My employer will be sending you a bill for 28 minutes wages for my lost productivity.

I commend you for watching that goal again; I have never experienced a moment in sports quite like that. I can't imagine the feeling it would have been like at the game. The closest experience that compares, I'd have to imagine, is the night game against Notre Dame. I still get goose bumps watching that Donovan goal, though.

"Hilarious" implies an elevated level of humor. I didn't even crack a smile.

 

I'm all for OT threads, WAY OT threads, and even OMGZ!!! ARIZONA RR OT threads, but threads that put forward absolute falsehoods is where I draw the line. That video stunk (at least the 40 seconds I watched of it did).

There is a general "rule of thumb" I follow when watching videos sent to me by others.  If they describe them as "hilarious" they are at best mildly amusing and usually stupid as hell.  If they describe them as a "must watch" then they are 15 mintues of a talking head droning on about how politician or religion X is going to destroy EVERYTHING if the "truth doesn't come out".

And if they describe them as XXX-anyththing then best make sure the significant other and or boss is not in eyeshot of the screen.  Those usually are correctly labeled.
