Wading in the waters of tRCMB, post Marshall

Submitted by FabFiver5 on

I took a chance and waded into the depths of the RCMB for a little Saturday afternoon enjoyment after the Marshall commitment. Meltdown is in full effect. I found this gem that made me literally LOL:

I don't know what's in the water in AA, but it's making kids believe whatever it is they're selling. I'd be very interested to see what the average visit is like down there. Between the dump of a city, the hideous girls, and a disgusting, inarticulate slob of a head coach, I'm surprised they can even put together a recruiting class - let alone a top ranked one. Nostalgia for the 1800s should only be able to take a program so far in 2013.

Enjoy your Saturday, everyone!

Meh, I think its more just self-deprecating humor and the knowledge that usually, the attractiveness of the student body / quality of amenities is inversely correlated to the quality of the school (barring some geographic assistance... I don't think there's a school south of Virginia that isn't well stocked with better-than-par women folk).  Ever heard the ole' Sparty joke: "Ann Arbor, where the squirrels are cuter than the girls and more confident than the guys"?  I think we can take some ribbing for the SINGLE college characteristic they beat us in.

Their idea of "hot girls" are ones who bleach their hair and act like they are on Jersey Shore.

Fits perfectly since they paid one of the Jersey Shore cast to come to a game.

Pathetic people.

With a degree from Michigan, you can get lots of good looking girls.

I even got one from Michigan State back in the day.  The irony is that I was taking her away from some MSU troll who was loudly proclaiming that MSU has all the good looking girls.

If you think they hate us now, wait until we've strung together several successive wins against them.  It's only gonna get worse, sparties.

"If you think they hate us now, wait until we've strung together several successive wins against them."

Oh man I cannot wait for that to happen.  It will remind me of what it was like through the late 60's.....all of the 70's.......all of the 80's.......all of the 90's.....and 2000's up to 08.

So in-other-words....basically my entire life OTHER than that blip from RR until year one of Brady.

And you realize that from 1970 to 1983 our record was 13-1 and from 2002-2007 our record was 6-0 making the years you conveniently omitted from my nearly 40 year look-back 19-1.

So when we add in the years you'd like to forget about that we went 19-1 and add in the years you'd like to count where we went 11-7 we went 30-8 which seems pretty dominant to me.

I do.  January of 88 or 89 if I remember correctly.  Bobby McAlister made a clutch pass to Andre Rison down the stretch to beat USC (and Rodney Peete, IIRC).  Even as a future M student or M freshman,  when Sparty was there it wasn't hard to pull for them to win.  I really didn't learn to strongly dislike MSU until the internet message board age when the ability to anonymously spew their vitriol really shed new light on them for me.

commitment today was the recruiting equivalent of a dong punch to Spartan fans.  Every single one of them I know with any knowledge of recruiting had him "in the bag" for the green and white.

This is Sparty's design. Like Harris, Marshall does not fit MSU's national recruiting strategy. They have their sights set much higher than simply the state of Michigan.

I always cringe at these posts, but its a slow week and this is big-ish news.  I will say, though, that when UM gets a kid from OSu or ND, I don't see nearly the number of Golden Domer blogs or OSU message board snickering we see with MSU.  Not saying that the pettiness is not deserved, but still hard to reconcile with the "MSU doesn't mean anything" mantra some people still proclaim.

TWIS is great, except when it's in reference to our in-state rival. Then we're above that.

I look forward to the day when following how Spartan fans respond to recruiting battles ceases to become important.

I like being a Michigan fan. I will never be an MSU fan. Having said that, I don't have the hatred and spite for Spartie that many feel.

As for why anyone would choose MSU, well, there are a number of reasons:

  • You jell well with their staff.
  • Your parents went to MSU.
  • MSU has your program of interest and Michigan doesn't.
  • You were accepted to MSU.
  • You are a better fit for what there team is doing and your particular skill set.

Michigan is a great choice. However, if the option is there, so is Alabama, or Southern Cal, or Stanford, or Florida, or Notre Dame, or Texas, or Texas A & M. For me, Michigan was the obvious choice. For a number of football players, one of the above schools might really be a better choice.

Honestly, it never ceases to amaze me how many decisions are made on the basis of emotions, and then "reasons" are given to support what ultimately is an emotional decision.

Thank you. None of us avoids all grammar and spelling errors. I'll plead guilty to multi-tasking and being sloppy, but still, there's never an excuse for that mistake. (Weird thing is, I had it right in the first bullet. What's up with that?)

No better thread than one pointing out how petty MSU fans are to display your own petty obsession wth typos, eh?

I am reminded of the late, great Richard Feynman's observation to Murrray Gell-Mann that "the purpose of language is communication."  SRK communicated perfectly clearly, typo nothwithstanding.  The MGoBoard's frequent digressions into nitpicks about typos (I am just using you as an example - you may be generally innocent as far as I know) is one of the truly annoying aspects of the board, and is the prime reason I can't recommend it to people only casually interested in Michigan sports - it makes us look like anal-rententive twits.

If you're looking forward to that day, I fear you will wait a long time.  It does seem that those most invested with this back and forth between Wolverine and Spartan fan bases, though, live in Michigan, where the interaction is unavoidable.  When I was growing up in Michigan, in the 1960s and 1970s, I don't recall nearly the level of vitriol.  Now that may be due in large part to the absence of an internet and easy ways for people to anonymously vent their emotions, but it might also be the case that from the late sixties through the 1980s (as mGrowOld pointed out), there really was no real competition in football between the schools.  From what I hear from people back in Michigan, now there is a lot of trash talking back and forth, and I'm talking about a work or school, or in the church or neighborhood--not anonymously on the internet. I'm convinced that much of the hatred and spite we see back and forth is driven by the real-world encounters people have spilling out onto sports blogs and sports radio.  The only way I see it subsiding is if Michigan regains the level of dominance it once had and starts beating the Spartans on a regular basis once again.

I'm sure you're right (about the trash talking and hatred that is present in-State.) I think that MSU will always have somewhat of an inferiority complex, at least in terms of the University. There are some programs (obviously, agriculture or animal science related) where I think they are significantly better than Michigan. But as far as being "prestigious," they're not in the same class, and never will be. This complex means that some of their fans will always be galled with Michigan. I guess I don't get why Michigan fans let them get under their skin so much. I mean, we have the most significant rivalry with Ohio, and until this year, had quite the rivalry with ND. But those rivalries don't seem to have quite the same level of pettiness and triteness and even hatred that I see some Michigan fans have for MSU. I get that some Michigan fans "respect" ND & Ohio, in a different way. Maybe things will never change until MSU improves both academically and also on the gridiron.

that I compeltely despise everything that involves moo.  I grew up in the John Cooper years where we lost to moo far more than we lost to ohio.  I certainly hate ohio as well but at least I respect them and their tradition....I have no respect for sparty or their fan base.  Any victory over moo that brings them any sort of frustration or misery puts a little sunshine in my day.  I know I have a problem...but I love to hate state.

i think its funny that some people get their panties in a bunch over a thread of making fun of stupid post on a rival site. sports is entertainment, entertainment is suppose to be fun. we are not laughing at or making fun of some tragic event, its people losing their shit over entertainment.

Sadly, that's par for the course over there, and even though it's a schtick in the form of a "prequel" to another post, the mods haven't blinked an eye at the overt anti-gay mindset, and it currently does have 39 upvotes.  The misogony over there is just as bad or worse (it's certainly more prevalent) and also accepted.  The only ones given a hard time by a preponderance of other posters are the ones who try to interject the voice of maturity or reason.  It's just the culture there.  The mods are either too lazy, too afraid of the mob reaction, or just don't think that sort of thing is a big deal, because it goes on all the time.

I was surprised to see an MSU shirt out at the bar in the Mediterranean last night. Less surprised when I saw the cops escort him out later.

Until the RR years.  Something changed forever when Ms. ND Sux and I were exiting the Big House after MSU's last win there.  The "go green / go white" chant united us in our hatred for MSU...she never cared much before either, but now hates Sparty with a passion.  In other words, she is more and more awesome every day.

I know...cool starry bra.

"Dump of a city"--actually, I would apply that to East Lansing.  Ann Arbor is one of the finest cities in the state, if not the nation.  Everyone who visits here says as much.

"All girls are ugly."--In undergrad, I dated a few girls, and just about every one was attractive in some way.  I'll take all our beautiful Asian women over their dumbass sorority chicks any day.
