Jealousy is a stinky cologne.
Its going back to the Big 2 and Little 10. I hope MSU enjoyed their four years of relative relevance.

Don't count out the Cats!
I've long expected Fitz to parlay his on-field success plus NU's academic standing into recruiting (like JH and now Shaw at Stanford). One class is far from enough, but I could see NU consistenly recruiting on the top half of the league. I hope they do.
Big 3, little 11 (and counting)
We'll see. This is a critical year for them, and if they can capitalize on the success they had last year, turn in another 10-win season and maybe more, they could find themselves in the mix for a lot more nationally ranked recruits. People are starting to realize Fitzgerald's abilities as a coach.
Facilities and school interest will probably continue to be an issue until Northwestern wins a Rose Bowl and people decide to start donating, but Fitzgerald has slowly been building that program up to where it is now. I think if he was at a school that actually invested in and gave a crap about its team, he would have won a lot quicker.
NW needs to hope they can keep him there.
Hi. I went to NU. Nice to meet you. I hope you enjoy your time here.
You went to Nebraska?
Odean, the makers of Sex Panther. . ..
So yeah, Sparty. Big bro took a few years off to try new things, some good, some bad, but adjustment period is over now son. That was sneaky of you to go around telling the world you could elevate and recruit inter-galactically while we were all flat footed making adjustments. But everyone knows you have nothing but a 12 inch vert that lets you maybe, and I mean maybe, touch a share of a Big Ten championship trophy once every two decades.
The elite recruits know there's only one program in this state with the vertical to reach beyond the Big Ten and touch a chance at the NC, and thanks to them we're getting ready to jump real, real high lil bro. You can see it coming. You and the Bullock famiy.
Now get out the way or get told. But you won't. You live to be a nuisance to us, that defines you. What a sad existence. Oh and enjoy Ohio and Penn State in the room now too. Lolz.
Four Years? I think that you're being generous. Two of MSU's last four seasons were 7-6 and 6-7. They pretty much had two years of relevance.....and it's over.
But I hate when people reply "who cares?" to threads. Obviously you cared enough to reply.
Posting to say the thread is stupid is accurate and ok; posting to say "who cares?" is contradictory and annoying?
The act of replying to a post hardly evidences great feeling and emotion; takes about 2 seconds, and "who cares" conveys poster's exasperation with the subject matter of MSU always cluttering the boards, no?
My sentiments that this post is stupid, were simply to say that it could be kept in the Hello thread. If he wanted to respond that the thread was not necessary, it would've come across better than just writing "who cares?'. Also, if you are having feelings of "exasperation" from a message board, you should evaluate your life, no?
in trying to make your exaggerated points.
But yes, if you find repeated posts about MSU's fan base to be exasperating, "reevaluate" your life. If, however, a message board post merely generates feelings of "hatred," such as you felt in your original post, keep on doing your thing!
...the idea was to jokingly make fun of sparty
What exaggerated points? I think I just shared an annoyance that most share. I also find it funny you're misconstruing my words to make you feel better about being exasperated about a message board. But you go ahead and just get in where you fit in, hey pal?
Actually, most people are fine with 'who cares' posts and prefer them to elongated posts that say the same thing. Most people think brevity is a good thing. Most people are also more annoyed by posters that are annoyed by 'who cares' posts.
Most people also think that when one poster gets schooled by another poster the schooled poster shouldn't respond by making a lame comment about others caring too much about a message board. Most people think that argument just goes in circles.
But hey, I'm not most people and you are A-OK.
10 points for slytherin.
Message board posts along the line of "Player X commits to rival school, rival school complains about said commitment" is an endless carousel. Happens on UM sites as well. It's just not freaking newsworthy.
Not sure why this thread is getting negged. This kind of stuff is fun as hell.
No, it's stupid and petty.
Welcome to the internet
Spoken like a true Michigan man. We're better than the rest.
Eh, mildly amusing at best. I get more enjoyment from ND or OSU, but I have a hard time getting all fired up that we stole a recruit from MSU. I'm fired up we got the commitment. But I like to think that MSU matters little in the grand scheme of things.
We didn't steal a recruit from MSU. They just thought they had the kid in the bag. Sounds like Marshall was never MSU's.
but for me the funny part is that many of them THOUGHT he was...and that he gave UM the verbal out of the Blue (see what I did there?) and their reaction is, well, priceless. To me anyway.
I know too many state fans who almost broke the bandwagon these last 5 years, my friend's fat girlfriend being the most loud and obnoxious one. Anything that takes them back down to the lowest peg (where they belong) is fine with me.
Ok. I don't ever see MSU fans so maybe that's why I feel differently.
They're absolutely insufferable the past few years. I've absorbed it mostly in silence. I want to see them squirm, it makes me smile.
I, too, ventured and can sum their feelings up like so:
UM pays their recruits
UM is the biggest negative recruiter in the conference
Starts/Recruit rankings are irrelevant
Cool. We're like the SEC of Michigan! It's gotta be true if Sparty says it.
So wait, which fanbase is obsessed with the other school?
Tired of these endless posts about Sparty fans freaking out on RCMB.
It's all they do. Well, that and write stupid posts
or the coup de grace (with a "would bang" designation)
Fact is, it is common knowledge that RCMB is about reactionary and/or child like posts...so checking their reactions after a supposed 'commit' flips to Michigan is just leading to an obvious outcome.
Someone from Lansing or East Lansing is referring to AA as a "dump." That is precious.
Also adorable: calling Hoke inarticulate when Dantonio's press conferences consist entirely of "growl growl mumble grunt go away."
That's why it's on so many "best of" lists. Also, A2 actually has a decent job market.
Ugly girls? Yes, Michigan is not Arizona State, but there are plenty of attractive girls. The douches who make comments about ugly UofM girls probably wouldn't have a chance with an attractive girl who is also intelligent.
Thank God for the UGLI girls while I was at Michigan (special thanks to strawberry margaritas in mason jars at Dominic's and Econ majors)
I always found Michigan girls pretty hot. If the sorority girl is your ideal, then Michigan may not be the place for you. The fact that M grads can get away with dogging Michigan women here is lame.
I've never understood how someone could make generalizations about the physical appearance of students at a school of 40,000. In my experience at Michigan, there were girls that fit into every possible category ("hot sorority girl" included).
The "They have ugly girls" thing is a typically juvenile, little-brother insult. Why people here internalize it, I don't understand.
i think the bigger issue is the consistent commentary that defines a woman's only value as being her looks.
I mean, why the fuck even go to college if your a woman who doesn't look good?
I've lived all over the country - in Phoenix and Dallas, in particular, and now in Chicago - and there are a disproportionate number of attractive women in the southern half of the country. But last time I checked, East Lansing was in the northern half. So, I'm not sure how a town a few hours away could claim the same geographic tendency as a region 2500 miles away to the south. But the bigger point: if you're picking a school based on women's looks, um, yeah.
My GF is hot. She went to Michigan. I'm satisfied.
Meh, I think its more just self-deprecating humor and the knowledge that usually, the attractiveness of the student body / quality of amenities is inversely correlated to the quality of the school (barring some geographic assistance... I don't think there's a school south of Virginia that isn't well stocked with better-than-par women folk). Ever heard the ole' Sparty joke: "Ann Arbor, where the squirrels are cuter than the girls and more confident than the guys"? I think we can take some ribbing for the SINGLE college characteristic they beat us in.
Their idea of "hot girls" are ones who bleach their hair and act like they are on Jersey Shore.
Fits perfectly since they paid one of the Jersey Shore cast to come to a game.
With a degree from Michigan, you can get lots of good looking girls.
I even got one from Michigan State back in the day. The irony is that I was taking her away from some MSU troll who was loudly proclaiming that MSU has all the good looking girls.
If you think they hate us now, wait until we've strung together several successive wins against them. It's only gonna get worse, sparties.
"If you think they hate us now, wait until we've strung together several successive wins against them."
Oh man I cannot wait for that to happen. It will remind me of what it was like through the late 60's.....all of the 70's.......all of the 80's.......all of the 90's.....and 2000's up to 08.
So in-other-words....basically my entire life OTHER than that blip from RR until year one of Brady.
you realize that from about 1984 to 2001 Michigan State basically beat Michigan once every 3 years right?
It was Michigan 11 wins, Staee 7
And you realize that from 1970 to 1983 our record was 13-1 and from 2002-2007 our record was 6-0 making the years you conveniently omitted from my nearly 40 year look-back 19-1.
So when we add in the years you'd like to forget about that we went 19-1 and add in the years you'd like to count where we went 11-7 we went 30-8 which seems pretty dominant to me.
What an amazing coincidence that your timeframe starts with an MSU win and ends with an MSU win. I think you've spent too much time in Lansing listening to MSU fans and their cherry-picked analysis.
I do. January of 88 or 89 if I remember correctly. Bobby McAlister made a clutch pass to Andre Rison down the stretch to beat USC (and Rodney Peete, IIRC). Even as a future M student or M freshman, when Sparty was there it wasn't hard to pull for them to win. I really didn't learn to strongly dislike MSU until the internet message board age when the ability to anonymously spew their vitriol really shed new light on them for me.
It was January 1988. In January '89 Bo beat USC for his second Rose Bowl win.
Except for a really bad holding call on a (Bo!!) fake punt in the January '90 Rose Bowl, the Big Ten was on the verge of 3 straight wins against USC in their backyard Rose Bowl.
"Sounds like Springfield's got a discipline problem. Maybe that's why we beat them at football nearly half the time!"
commitment today was the recruiting equivalent of a dong punch to Spartan fans. Every single one of them I know with any knowledge of recruiting had him "in the bag" for the green and white.
I don't give a fuck about sparty and their whining this is just getting pathetic.
This is Sparty's design. Like Harris, Marshall does not fit MSU's national recruiting strategy. They have their sights set much higher than simply the state of Michigan.
I always cringe at these posts, but its a slow week and this is big-ish news. I will say, though, that when UM gets a kid from OSu or ND, I don't see nearly the number of Golden Domer blogs or OSU message board snickering we see with MSU. Not saying that the pettiness is not deserved, but still hard to reconcile with the "MSU doesn't mean anything" mantra some people still proclaim.
The thing is...nobody does meltdowns like the rcmb.
Well, I've seen a couple of here during the RR era that rival anything you've seen at RCMB. People freaking out on the Internet is a pretty universal dumpster fire.
Why is he surprised? How many people, if offered the chance to attend either school, pick MSU?
Loving this in-state recruiting "battle" jajajamajahaaha-a-a-a
TWIS is great, except when it's in reference to our in-state rival. Then we're above that.
Well, green is their color.
How all the other passions fleet to air, as doubtful thoughts and rash embraced despair and shuddering fear and Sparty-eyed jealousy!
I look forward to the day when following how Spartan fans respond to recruiting battles ceases to become important.
I like being a Michigan fan. I will never be an MSU fan. Having said that, I don't have the hatred and spite for Spartie that many feel.
As for why anyone would choose MSU, well, there are a number of reasons:
Michigan is a great choice. However, if the option is there, so is Alabama, or Southern Cal, or Stanford, or Florida, or Notre Dame, or Texas, or Texas A & M. For me, Michigan was the obvious choice. For a number of football players, one of the above schools might really be a better choice.
Honestly, it never ceases to amaze me how many decisions are made on the basis of emotions, and then "reasons" are given to support what ultimately is an emotional decision.
...if you confuse "there" and "their"
"You are a better fit for what there team is doing and your particular skill set."
Sorry SRK, had to do it.
Thank you. None of us avoids all grammar and spelling errors. I'll plead guilty to multi-tasking and being sloppy, but still, there's never an excuse for that mistake. (Weird thing is, I had it right in the first bullet. What's up with that?)
No better thread than one pointing out how petty MSU fans are to display your own petty obsession wth typos, eh?
I am reminded of the late, great Richard Feynman's observation to Murrray Gell-Mann that "the purpose of language is communication." SRK communicated perfectly clearly, typo nothwithstanding. The MGoBoard's frequent digressions into nitpicks about typos (I am just using you as an example - you may be generally innocent as far as I know) is one of the truly annoying aspects of the board, and is the prime reason I can't recommend it to people only casually interested in Michigan sports - it makes us look like anal-rententive twits.
If you're looking forward to that day, I fear you will wait a long time. It does seem that those most invested with this back and forth between Wolverine and Spartan fan bases, though, live in Michigan, where the interaction is unavoidable. When I was growing up in Michigan, in the 1960s and 1970s, I don't recall nearly the level of vitriol. Now that may be due in large part to the absence of an internet and easy ways for people to anonymously vent their emotions, but it might also be the case that from the late sixties through the 1980s (as mGrowOld pointed out), there really was no real competition in football between the schools. From what I hear from people back in Michigan, now there is a lot of trash talking back and forth, and I'm talking about a work or school, or in the church or neighborhood--not anonymously on the internet. I'm convinced that much of the hatred and spite we see back and forth is driven by the real-world encounters people have spilling out onto sports blogs and sports radio. The only way I see it subsiding is if Michigan regains the level of dominance it once had and starts beating the Spartans on a regular basis once again.
I'm sure you're right (about the trash talking and hatred that is present in-State.) I think that MSU will always have somewhat of an inferiority complex, at least in terms of the University. There are some programs (obviously, agriculture or animal science related) where I think they are significantly better than Michigan. But as far as being "prestigious," they're not in the same class, and never will be. This complex means that some of their fans will always be galled with Michigan. I guess I don't get why Michigan fans let them get under their skin so much. I mean, we have the most significant rivalry with Ohio, and until this year, had quite the rivalry with ND. But those rivalries don't seem to have quite the same level of pettiness and triteness and even hatred that I see some Michigan fans have for MSU. I get that some Michigan fans "respect" ND & Ohio, in a different way. Maybe things will never change until MSU improves both academically and also on the gridiron.
that I compeltely despise everything that involves moo. I grew up in the John Cooper years where we lost to moo far more than we lost to ohio. I certainly hate ohio as well but at least I respect them and their tradition....I have no respect for sparty or their fan base. Any victory over moo that brings them any sort of frustration or misery puts a little sunshine in my day. I know I have a problem...but I love to hate state.
Negged for "moo".
Sadly, that's par for the course over there, and even though it's a schtick in the form of a "prequel" to another post, the mods haven't blinked an eye at the overt anti-gay mindset, and it currently does have 39 upvotes. The misogony over there is just as bad or worse (it's certainly more prevalent) and also accepted. The only ones given a hard time by a preponderance of other posters are the ones who try to interject the voice of maturity or reason. It's just the culture there. The mods are either too lazy, too afraid of the mob reaction, or just don't think that sort of thing is a big deal, because it goes on all the time.
I was surprised to see an MSU shirt out at the bar in the Mediterranean last night. Less surprised when I saw the cops escort him out later.
Until the RR years. Something changed forever when Ms. ND Sux and I were exiting the Big House after MSU's last win there. The "go green / go white" chant united us in our hatred for MSU...she never cared much before either, but now hates Sparty with a passion. In other words, she is more and more awesome every day.
I know...cool starry bra.
"Dump of a city"--actually, I would apply that to East Lansing. Ann Arbor is one of the finest cities in the state, if not the nation. Everyone who visits here says as much.
"All girls are ugly."--In undergrad, I dated a few girls, and just about every one was attractive in some way. I'll take all our beautiful Asian women over their dumbass sorority chicks any day.
...is a bit of harmless fun.
Love the "unique" grammar and spelling at RCMB as well... :)
