W Swim wins B1G Championship; Harbaugh gave pre-meet talk

They share a natatorium with the most dominant program in the Men's side of college swimming. Now it's the women's turn to hoist the B1G crown.

For the first time since 2004, the Michigan Women's team has won the B1G Championship.

And they did it in their house. Canham Natatorium here in Ann Arbor.

Head coach Mike Bottom may have cemented himself as one of the top coaches in the history of Michigan Athletics. He also coaches the Men's team, and they've won the last 5 B1G Championships and the 2013 NCAA National Championship.

Now coach Bottom's women's team have finally struck gold.

Michigan won individual titles in the following events-

  • 800yd Freestyle Relay
  • 200yd Individual Medley (Siobhán Haughey)
  • 200yd Freestyle (Siobhán Haughey)
  • 100yd Backstroke (Clara Smiddy)
  • 200yd Backstroke (Clara Smiddy)
  • 100yd Freestyle (Siobhán Haughey)
  • 400yd Freestyle Relay

Siobhán Haughey was named the Swimmer of the Championships. But no mistake about it, this was truly a TEAM effort. Michigan needed every point it could get to hold off bitter aquatics rival Indiana.

It wasn't the titles, but the top finishers in not just the championship heats, but the consolation and bonus heats that won this title. Michigan jumped 100 points in ONE EVENT yesterday due to having four swimmers in the championship heat of 8.

Final standings.

Place Team Points
1. Michigan 1361
2. Indiana 1207.5
3. Minnesota 927.5
4. Ohio State 859
5. Purdue 766.5
6. Wisconsin 712
7. Penn State 687.5
8. Northwestern 467
9. Nebraska 411.5
10. Rutgers 385
11. Iowa 369.5
12. Illinois 234
13. Michigan State 210

Assist to Harbaugh. He gave the team a pre-meet talk and even did the team chant with them. BTN filmed it and it was glorious. Hope someone posts the video.

Giving a pre-competition pep talk to a team of a different sport at your university??? What is this nonsense??????

1. Just because it isn't forbidden my the rules doesn't mean it's okay.

2. He is clearly tiring of this whole thing and wants to get back to the NFL.

Watching Harbaugh make the rounds with all the varsity sports is actually quite fun, but more to the point, it's indicative of a man who seems very much at home and a man who wants to be doing exactly what you see him doing, including giving a pre-meet speech to the women's swimming team. If there was ever a model for fully embracing everything that your alma mater is, it might very well be Jim Harbaugh.
