No disrespect, love what they do...but best in the nation?  Going to have to see some giant, blown-up photos of various faces before I can vote for that.

edit:  swapped in 'faces' for 'heads'...

So if we bring giant heads to a game then we automatically become better??? Keep in mind we are NOT right behind the basket like the schools that bring giant heads to games. Get your facts straight first.

What does honest opinion have to do with internet polls like this?  In these polls, fans (students, alums, whatever) vote for their school -- their players, coaches, and in this case student section -- in a completely biased, homer way.  No one ever reasonably interprets these polls as actual critical analysis.

If you are a Michigan fan, vote for the Maize Rage and quite thinking so hard.  Doing well in polls like this helps create reputation, which is what any student section needs.   Let's face it:  on the merits they are all 20-year-old students in t-shirts yelling and jumping around.

Support Michigan.  Go Blue!

Like so many polls, it's best to just provide an honest answer and not stuff the ballot box, as it were. That being said, I think the Maize Rage is awesome and will only grow with the sustained success of this team - at this moment in time, it is just not the best if we're looking at all the student sections in Division I collectively.

You're right, no one ever takes these polls to be "critical analysis" of prevailing opinion, but why contribute and affirm something you feel isn't the case? I can be a fan and at  the same time believe we don't have the best student section for basketball. These are not inconsistent thoughts.

Wrong. Vote for Michigan no matter what. Polls like these, you just do that and there is no need for objectivity.

As the President of the Maize Rage, I am offended by that. What if I told you that we have the third most students with tickets in the Big Ten? Would that change your opinion? Your opinion (like so many others) is rooted in the past. Sure, we weren't all that good three years ago, but times have changed. Watch a Duke game. They are good, but not all that impressive. Watch a Michigan State game. We brought 50 students to Breslin last year and were louder than the whole student section, and there are many MSU boards to back me up on this. Watch anyone play a game on TV (which generally means a good opponent) and then watch a Michigan game against a good opponent and tell me we are way behind them. You can't.

I would be interested in hearing the four sections you think are better than us though...hahaha.

Maize rage is great (from the perspective of a fellow student).  That being said, I don't think you can say that we have one of the best basketball student sections in the nation, it's a pretty good one, but sadly it pales in comparison to Cameron Crazies or other student sections from schools that have had long term success on the court.

Furthermore, you're new here, which is fine, we all were at one point, but don't start posting ripping on someone like Boyz N Da Pahokee.  He's been around here for a long time, and he contributes some amazing things to the blog (pretty much every video of michigan football outside of Brian, Ace's and Heiko's posts are posted by Boyz n da Pahokee).  So focus your ire elsewhere.  Ohio is a good place to start.

Top two most overrated student sections in the country:

1. Cameron Crazies - used to be great, but they do nothing special. Sure they camp out for games because they have nothing else to do and have no football team. Our AD doesn't allow us to camp out for games, but we are just as loud as the Cameron Crazies.

2. Izzone - also used to be very good, but have faded incredibly in recent years.

A lot of Michigan basketball games this season and the student section has been decent but besides jumping around and maybe cheering really loud on big plays I have not seen anzything that would truly separate them above the rest.

The whole maize rage needs to get together and come up with some chants or something. Besides being really loud when someone dunks, maybe only half the people are jumping. And like I said, there aren't really any creative chants or anything.

been to a basketball game at Crisler in the past couple seasons? Sure, we may not be THE best in the nation, but I think we are right in the discussion for best in the Big Ten and up there in terms of the whole country. I hate how the Cameron Crazies and the Izzone get so much love just because they used to be pretty good. Watch a game TODAY and then give your opinion! We are right there with anyone.

I would vote for them if I thought they deserved to be voted for, but I don't. And it's not entirely their fault, other schools have the advantage of having good basketball teams consistently and selling student tickets consistently. The Maize Rage is still in its growing phase, and if the basketball team finishes the year well then it will continue for next year.

At Duke, they camp out in tents for months in order to get good seats...to ONE game (vs UNC)

At San Diego St, you are almost required to create a costume

Sorry. Cant do it.

You vote for the best, not must popular. You don't just blindly vote for Michigan if we aren't even close. I am guilty of voting for Michigan 99% of the time, but the maize rage is turrible. The good thing is they seem to be getting better, so go blue!

Being objective I could not in good conscious vote for the Maize Rage. Even Purdue's Paint Crew is a better student section than the Maize Rage. They camp out for games like the Cameron Crazies. The bball program's trip down to Bolivia for the last decade did a number on fan and student interest. The Maize Rage is still growing with the program. Ask me in a few years with sustained success, and then I will maybe vote for them. heck, the maize rage is one of the weaker student sections at this University. I would put the volleyball student section and the Ultras above the Maize Rage with the Children of Yost at the top.

I am a huge fan and supporter of all fans here on campus, but their sections don't even compare to the Maize Rage. We have consistently drawn over 1000 kids to every game this season. The Ultras are lucky to draw 30 to a weeknight game. Volleyball has one row of kids. The Children of Yost are not even recognized by the University. They are great, but don't have the numbers to compete with us. The Maize Rage is without question the best student section on campus. And don't say football, because there is no organized section for it.

I'd vote for them if they could figure out how to be more unified.  The people at center court are always more into the game than the people on the baselines.  The latter group seems almost embarassed to cheer loudly.

So following your logic to its natural conclusion we would be obligated to "vote for Michigan", even if the poll was to select the finest program in animal husbandry in the land?

I fear if we do as you suggest those poor fellows up in East Lansing would have no academic glory upon which to rest their laurels.

earned or been threatened with a team Technical, you're not an elite student section.  The student section I was in (small Div III school) was so notorious, the school eventually removed the bleachers where we sat (under the baskets).  The students who have followed in our footsteps have done alright, but what really makes a great student section is a combination of unique cheers, sustained involvement through the whole game, and a winning team.  Watching the Maize Rage on TV, it seems like they could improve things by getting loud in the down times of the game to encourage the team (or to rankle the opponent).  Other than that, they are certainly an up and coming student section - glad that they moved them down by the benches.  Keep up the good work and go stuff the ballots.

I've never been to the big house. but on tv. it doesn't sound that loud. besides the under the lights game. maize rage doesnt even sound as rowdy as the izzone.

If the maize rage had more lower level seating I think they would be way better. Schools with good student sections like MSU, Gonzaga, and Duke have the majority of lower seats. The maize rage only has like 5 rows on one side and the rest are stuck behind the basket or in the upper bowl.
