I've watched Va Tech a few times this year, and haven't been very impressed.  They always seem to put out a good D, seemingly every year, but struggle against offenses with playmakers;  this year, was Clemson.

I'd like to see what #16 and company can do.

Their offense seems pretty vanilla, if you ask me.  But I don't know why you would ask me...

7 point win over East Carolina

3 point win over Miami (YTM)

4 point win over Duke

3 point win over North Carolina

A combined 48 point differential in their two losses to Clemson

0 wins against teams currently in the Top 25

I've got a stat:

Number of top 25 teams they've played - 2.

Record in those games - 0-2.

Combined score in those games - 61-13.

Miami (YTM), UNC, Duke(!) and East Carolina(!!) were all within a TD, the first two were at home.

I was going to say the same thing.  That defense isn't like the ones from years ago - you can move the ball on them.  The secondary is very suspect, and the LBs, which tend to be a strength for Beamer squads, are pretty mediocre.  They have decent special teams and an offense that can move the ball in spurts, but this feels like a weird matchup considering the other ones on the table (offensive teams like KSU and Baylor).

I grew up a Virginia Tech fan and still follow them losely. They're perpetually good but never great. I've only seen bits of games this year but it seems like Logan Thomas has been getting better as the years progressed but like all virginia tech offenses, they seem a bit challenged most of the time. I think if we contain the run, they won't be able to pass the ball effectively (which I feel has been the case in at least half our games this year)

Defense is good but the ACC sucks. The only good teams they've played have put up serious points.

#13 Clemson L 3-23
#21 Ga Tech W 37-26
#20 Clemson L 10-38

I'm very confident we can put up at least 30 on them. I think if we contain the run (and zone read) we can win by two scores

They suck, they really do.  Their passing attack is decent at best and their running game is their only offensive threat.  Despite being a rushing team, they don't run the clock out and pound the football very well like Wisconsin or LSU do.  Their best damn play is the inside zone-read because the defense always seems to leave Thomas open for some reason (IE last play against Miami).

Their defense isn't as good as in past years.  Nothing to say about them really; they don't have playmakers and we'll likely score 30+ points like usual.

Special teams: Again, nothing to see here.  They don't have a great return game and it's not dangerous at all.  Their return defense is just like anybody else's.

In the end, this team isn't good.  If we don't beat them by three touchdowns, I'll be disappointed.

This is very new territory for us.  I believe our previous opponents in BCS Bowl games were always ranked in the top 5.  I'm actually surprised Virginia Tech is even ranked #11 with their schedule.

But whatever.  I look forward to the game anyway.  It's our first meeting with the Hokies and the Sugar Bowl is the only major bowl we have never won.

It's going to be weird waiting until January 3rd, though.  Latest bowl start in school history.

Eh....the truth is that kick blocking has been the Frank Beamer calling card because he's always emphasized it.  Lazy announcers stretched that to "special teams."  VT has never really been any better or worse, on average through the years, than anyone else at such things like punting, kick coverage, and the like.  Or at least, no better than your average good football team.

They are the single most overrated program in all of college football.  People are enamored with them because they win 10 games a year against Duke, Wake Forest, UVA, and the rest of the joke that is the ACC.  What is the last good team they've beaten?  I would love to know their record vs. ranked teams outside of the ACC over the past decade.  This is more of a tuneup for Alabama next year.  Let's see if Denard can put together 2 great performances in a row and is ready to make a Heisman run next year.

This won't even be one of those games where its close for a while then Michigan pulls ahead, Michigan jumps on them early and often and wins by 30.

In the last 10 years, 2-9 against top 10 teams...

2010: Lost to Stanford 40-12

2010: Lost to Boise State 33-30

2009: Lost to Alabama 34-24

2007: Lost to LSU 48-7

2007: Lost to Kansas 24-21

2005: Beat West Virginia 34-17

2004: Lost to Auburn 16-13

2004: Lost to USC 24-13

2003: Beat Miami 31-7

2002: Lost to Miami 56-45

2001: Lost to Miami 26-24

Also interesting to see the Michael Vick years (1999 and 2000).  Only twice did they ever play top 10 teams and they lost 46-29 to Florida State and 41-21 to Miami.

The main thing I think about when it comes to VaTech, other than playing horrible teams, is scoring on special teams plays...Beamer ball.  But we haven't heard much about their special teams lately.  Or maybe I just wasn't paying much attention.

As a person from the state of Virginia, I can say that most people here who aren't Tech fans acknowledge Tech is an overrated program. I'm generally annoyed by Tech fans because they seem to be the state-wide bandwagon team, but this year I'm more annoyed by all of my friends at UVA who `are suddenly the world's greatest football fans because UVA is having a winning season (or I'm just bitter because they spanked my school...)

Personally I don't think either of the two of us has a strong enough body of work to play in a BCS game, but it will still be entertaining to watch.

VT had an unimpressive year and REALLY does not deserve to be in a BCS bowl. They bring in television markets along the entire east coast and along with Michigan, it will rake in the money. Seems like the BCS is playing it safe financially this year, I'll be interested in seeing the financial statements for the Sugar Bowl after the game. I bet the execs are making at least 6 figures for 4 weeks of work, which is just...whack. Baylor, Boise, K-State all would have been great games, but just not as big on the guaranteed viewers, money side. Which is unfortunate, because I think RG3 should win the heisman and deserves a lot of the credit for the rise of Baylor - and a BCS bowl should be their reward.

In regards to VT, Logan Thomas is a freshman, but technically has played enough to where we can call him a sophomore. Yet, the defenses in the ACC aren't very complicated, just athletic. I think we disguise different coverages and blitz packages and really confuse him. Stopping the run will be the biggest thing. Their defense is fast and undisciplined, so I bet Borges runs a lot of fakes, misdirections and screens, but not bubbles...hehehe. Michigan will win big.
