Virginia Tech blogs

Since I haven't watch a Virginia Tech game since last year's Orange Bowl, I did a little poking around for some intel on our adversary and found a good Va Tech blog called "The Key Play." It looks like it has quite a bit of good content--especially under its "Film Study" tab where you'll find a number of respectable-looking diaries about previous Hokie games, including one which looks like a poor-man's UFR of the Georgia Tech game.  Their SB Nation site is Gobbler Country.

Gobbler Country comes highly recommended by this UVA blogger.  I've traded question and answer sessions with them for four years now.  Good stuff.  Key Play isn't bad either.

This ought to be called the Key Bowl since fans of both teams jingle 'em.

Interesting, and also very encouraging.  According to that guy, Virginia Tech does not have a single 4-star athlete among its starting front 7 on defense, which he says makes them vulnerable to big plays in the running game--seems like something #16 and #28 ought to be able to take advantage of.  He also says their O-Line has been disappointing, which is always good news.

What is a Hokie? The origin of the word "Hokie" has nothing to do with a turkey. It was coined by O. M. Stull (class of 1896), who used it in a spirit yell he wrote for a competition.

The article is accurate about the origin, but I was in Blacksburgh this summer to do research, and one of my bosses who had lived in Christiansburgh her whole life (neighboring town) explained that a "Hokie Bird" was turkey, like the turkey statues that were all over town. The source of this confusion is can actually be teased out of the truth of that article: both were (seperate) symbols of the football team/ university, so they became associated with one another.

Warning: My imagination is inefficient.

Some of the comments there are interesting. Apparently some of them are trying out the Walmart Wolverines jab. It's really funny and maybe even inspiring how quickly they get fired up with dislike for Michigan even though we've never actually played a game against them. I guess that's cool though.

Having lived and worked in Southwest Virginia (like south of Roanoke where people refuse to aknowledge exists), I can say VT has no right trying to take jabs at people who cheer for teams who they have not attended school at.  That being said, this should be a very loud Sugar Bowl, and I'm looking forward to the match up.

Best comment on gobblercountry so far, lol.  I can't believe he's seriously comparing Michigan to Arkansas...  STATE!

But I think Denard Robinson doesn’t provide nearly the same matchup threat to our defense that Tajh Boyd and his weapons did. This should be more of an Arkansas State style offense that we played pretty well against.

I read some of there posts about the bowl game.  All I saw was a bunch of chest pounding and no analysis.  I guess I'm spoiled here because even the casual user here typically adds something, even if its just something to make you laugh.   I have a blog-crush on mgoblog. So much so that I'm sure the vigilance of my fellow mgousers will direct my attention to noteworthy items on the VT boards, probably provide succint abstracts, along with counterpoints and exploration of said noteworthy items.

Go Blue.

And when we play as a team, when the old season is over, you and I know it’s going to be Michigan again. Michigan!

One of my favorite past times is checking out other teams' blogs to see their take on news/games relating to their team and I have come to the same conclusion. The amount of worthwile content and insightful/funny comments on MGoBlog make it second to none in terms of sports blogs. We are really lucky to have the community and site.

I respected them for that.  Basically just gave a middle finger to that and brought in their cowbells.  Mississippi State fans were real friendy too.

Is a really solid and well coached team. I'm married to a Hokie so I've watched most of their games.  Logan Thomas and David Wilson are serious weapons and Bud Foster their D coordinator is as legit as they come.  Expect a solid game plan that will be executed well.  They do have some injuries on D so if we avoid mistakes there will be points to be had.  All in all I expect a tight (as the line suggests) game that will probably come down to one or two big plays either way.

Most years (at least recently) they have dominated an ACC that has had at least a few decent teams and had a big OOC win. This year they've done none of that and been blown out twice. VT in the top ten was a joke... They're barely a top 25 team.

I'm not saying they should be overlooked . This is college footall after all and they are well coached. But we should win this one decisively.
