Vince Lombardi

If you haven't heard Coach Rod's quote mentioning Vince Lombardi you will...

My question is this - Does he plan on saying this or is this just off the cuff? I don't know man. I just don't know

"I think we could bring in Vince Lombardi and I don't know if he could fix some of the things with our defense"

I do not think any of us would disagree with the statement...however, should he really be saying this to the media?

Maybe he realizes the heat is more on Gerg than on him.  If the offense continues to put up 500+ yards of offense the rest of the year, then the part of him being an offensive genius gets validated.  But if we're losing these games because of our D, then it may be easier for the administration to make Gerg a scapegoat.

LLOYD CARR WOULDVE ONLY BROUGHT IN VINCE LOMBARDI AS A LINEBACKERS COACH WHEN HE WAS THEIR. WE DEMAND EXCELENCE... YOUR DAMN RIGHT. RR HAS TO GO BACK GO BLUE

how anybody else says this and it's, 'yeah, no kidding,' but having come out of Rich Rod's mouth it somehow becomes inappropriate, insensitive, whatever. Also, Vince made his bones as an Offensive Coordinator for the Giants before his Packer days, so Rodriguez probably isn't going out on much of a limb there. Maybe he should've just stood up there with grumpy glares and said "tremendous" repeatedly because apparently that's a quicker route to media respect around here.

I think it does show that the criticism is getting to him. I think we can all agree that Dave Brandon is one hell of a leader and we all want him as our AD. When Brandon came in, he took blame and responsibility for the NCAA violations. Thats what a leader does, he takes responsibility for success and failure, even if its not his fault. I think this gives the wrong impression that RR doesn't feel he has control over the D getting better. I don't know, thats just my opinion, I'm sure everyone has their own.

Him trying to make it clear that the # 1 problem with the defense is the youth. They are young. I am personally starting to think otherwise but I am far from a football coach and I dont plan to be. I will say his comment "atleast we're fun to watch", he maybe should have thought twice about saying that because fact of the matter, this team has not been fun to watch for the most part. Sure we have Denard running for school records, but we also have offenses like Bowling Green having record days against our defense. Is that supposed to be fun to watch?

I hope he gets another year, I'm not calling for his head. It would be less surprising to me at this point if he does get shown the door.

over and over and people not get pissed at that. At least referencing Lombardi is something different coming out of his mouth.

It has to be frustrating answering the same questions over and over when injuries, youth, inexperience, and attrition can only be overcome with time.

Blame no one, expect nothing, do something

Lloyd Carr once said this and got the quote from the Jets locker room, someone should relate this to RR and explain what it means. He needs to start being accountable for his failures and successes.

He handles wins and losses the same.  He doesn't take credit for wins, but does give credit to the players and the other coaches for preparing and executing.

When Michigan loses and he hears the same questions, what else do you want him to say but the truth?  The Defense is under construction.  There are serious depth & experience issues, and that's what he was trying to get at.  Nothing more.  RELAX.

I agree with the depth and inexperience of the defense, but whose fault is that? Can we really blame Lloyd for the talent deficiency on defense. Granted Woolfolk's injury was not anyone's fault and Carr did recruit Cissoko. But this is seriously becoming an issue, the defense is not just bad; its one of the worst in the country. This is not EMU this is Michigan and the kids on defense lack the basic fundamentals, i.e. tackling and staying in their gaps/lanes,

I agree he should be held accountable; from your first post (and maybe I read into it incorrectly) but it seemed like you were suggesting he isn't "taking responsibility."  But what can RR do this year to help defense? Part of it is coaching, but the other part, as you say, is recruiting.  RR can get nothing but 5 star defensive prospects this year and potentially not see the benefits until 2-3 years later.

Similarly he could have solid defensive players he's recruited over the last two seasons, but it may take time to really see the benefits.

I think we can all agree that it is going to take some time. Now I am still on the RR bandwagon and unlike some fans, I want to see him successful and strive here because I think he can (look at the progression of the offense). However, it is extremely frusterating to see him stand there and make comments like that saying Vince Lombardi couldnt fix our defense. He may not be able to but RR needs to stop complaining and start doing.

and taking quotes out of context by 97.1 is what sports talk radio outlets do best. Hell you can say that about all talk radio, political, religious, and sports. Anything to get the phones ringing and advertising dollars rolling in...

All I have to say is thank God for Pandora. My stress levels have dropped like a rock since I stopped listening to 97.1 and WTKA. I could care less what joe blow radio host and callers like mike from inkster have to say on the matter.

with that said even Vince woody Schembechler couldn't fix our D.

I think his point is pretty f'ing simple, if you're not trying to actively misconstrue it.

He is simply saying that coaches cannot magically make players older or more game-experienced.

There are certain things that are endemic to our program this year, like it or not.

hey you asked. Notice I said I agreed with Lloyd

but whatever you can take what I said out of context.

I think neither of us should hit the reply button to each other...

at least this board is more readable than the Fort on rivals.com. jebus, that board is a disaster right now. The mods over there do jack to limit the trolls. Heck, even a couple of the mods fuel the nonsensical ranting.

and i legitimately want to understand why this comment upsets people. the players themselves would likely admit they made bad reads or tackled poorly. those are problems that don't magically go away no matter who coaches them. they're problems that practice and experience dissolves. i would say comments in 2008 regarding how "bad" the roster looked once he got to see it were 30x more incendiary than stating a football legend wouldn't be able to correct the errors being made.

He's the leader. His message to his young secondary should not be: I could bring in the best football coach of all time and you'd still be terrible. I fully realize this was not his intent. It's just not something you say at a press conference IMO.

antonio_sass

Dude, if you ACTUALLY listened to the press conference...

There was quite a bit of time devoted to how excited the players and coaches are within the program for the great things they are building. He said he was very frustrated with these two losses, but he knows the future looks bright.

In other words...check yo'self, before you wrecke yo'self.

I did listen to the press conference...

"There was quite a bit of time devoted to how excited the players and coaches are within the program for the great things they are building. He said he was very frustrated with these two losses, but he knows the future looks bright."

.....I never denied he said any of those things....it was a stupid comment.  People say stupid things during press conferences, and this is one for Rich Rod....the sky is not falling, it was just dumb.....moving on.

In other words.....dont go chasing waterfalls, stick to the rivers and the lakes that your used too.

Some people probably view it as an excuse that shouldn't need to be said in year three of his tenure. It's pretty obvious it's just another way of saying that Michigan is playing the card it's been dealt with the defense, but I can understand how some would interpret it as an excuse. (i.e. yes the defense is bad, but ultimately it's his responsibility)
