VIDEO: Michigan Offense vs. OSU Every Snap

Submitted by DGDestroys on

So I've been pretty busy this season and haven't really had access to a lot of these torrents throughout (although I still hope to have all the Every Snap videos completed by the bowl game). This one worked out, however, and I had time today to put it together. I'll try to put together defense tomorrow, and I'll make sure the link gets out when I have the whole season together.

You might want to want sooner rather than later because a certain media company has already started flagging my youtube channel. I'll inevitably have to move this, so get your fix in while you can.

After rewatching:

-Responsibility for offensive improvement:

  • Improved OL play 15%
  • Playcalling 25%
  • Being able to exploit OSUs crappy LB and safety with Dileo and Butt: 10%
  • Running back improvement: 10%
  • Superlative Devin Gardner performance: 40%

- Of the running backs, Fitz will stretch out the run the most when he gets to the second level, Green makes the most of what he is given, and Smith is the most likely to make something out of nothing.  Of the three, Smith looked the best.  Whatever kept him off of the travel roster a few weeks back, it seems the lesson was learned.

-Funchess is a phenomenal athlete, but he doesn't just occasionally get the drops, he seems a little mentally uneven in all aspects of the game.  I would certainly not say he takes plays off, but it does seem like there are plays where his mind is elsewhere.  Brainfart prone.

- The OSU DL looked good, but Michigan is a poor team to judge against.  The linebackers and secondary, on the other hand are very exploitable.  Roby and Shazier are the only two that really seem to be better than JAG, and they are basically just good at running people down.

- I hope its replicable but I can see reasons why it might not be.

  • The playcalling had the twin effects of taking advantage of exploiting an OSU weakness and covering up a problem Michigan has had.  They did a great job of getting after the linebackers and safeties and that made them hesitant, where past defenses have used them extremely aggressively.    We'll have to wait and see if Borges keeps that sort of quick-hitting PA pass game going against the bowl opponent.
  • I was harsh on Borges when he made his "when they want to show up" comment, but I felt like the leaders of this offense (Devin and Taylor, in particular - not Gallon, he's always on top of his game) basically "showed up" in a way they hadn't in prior weeks.  It is the Game, so a bit of that is to be expected, especially when everyone tells you you are going to get destroyed.  However, I could definitely see a how a let down could occur at the bowl game.

-  Nobody was probably more capable of helping this offense mask over some of its weaknesses than Drew Dileo, and having him healthy may have swung a game or two.  He'll be missed.

The hurdle is still perhaps one of my favorite moments of that game and it just seems to underscore what a nightmare he is for defenses. I sat there near some OSU fans who muttered, "What the hell?" and could only say, "Trouble getting open? Just jump over the defense. Simple."

Thanks for putting this together, DGDestroys.

After watching this again I must say DG really had some good velocity on the ball, and he just seemd to sling the ball around better than he has recently. There's no doubt in my mind some sort of injury bothered him during parts of the season.

Also, that 2-pt conversion play was doomed.  He was locked on to Dileo and he has trouble recognizing guys undercutting from the middle of the defense.

Gallon may have come open before Devin got sacked, but it certainly looked like didn't care about anybody but Dileo there.

Thanks for posting this.  Man, so many highs, and one major low, right at the end.  I just hope this opened the eyes of the offensive coaching staff to what level of talent is on this roster and how awesome they can be if allowed to go out and play ball.

-Kalis got soundly beat. It looked like he wasn't even trying to block. The rest of the line held up well.

-Gardner could have held out for just a half second longer but he was locked into Dileo all the way

-Gallon was slow out of his break and he would have been open but Gardner still could have gotten the ball to him.

-Funchess would have been open with a few seconds extra as well.

ABSURDITY!

This was probably the most impressive, exciting, and well-rounded performance the Michigan offense has put up in the Brady Hoke era.  Stop it before the last 15 seconds and pretend something else happened, but watch this multiple times and pray it foreshadows wonderful things to come.

Seriously, that is like ~20 min of the best football a Michigan fan could watch.

What it, and then watch it again.

I believe because Michael Bennett was wise/lucky enough to wander into the middle of that huge mass of Michigan players gathered on the other side of the field when it was obvious he wasn't needed on containment.

By design, Devin takes a nonchalant route over there, which makes getting it to him over Bennett a pretty tough throw for a WR (albeit a high school QB).  I'd rather have Gallon overthrow it being safe, than have him try to put a perfect pass and land it in fat guy's lap with end zone in front of him.

me wish that they had a few more years of eligibility. Gallon can make crazy plays and Dileo is just a, generally speaking, reliable receiver, sort of an Avant type in that he catches most things thrown his way. That being said, I think we will be doing ok with Butt and Funchess at TE and I hope that Darboh and Chesson develop well. Chesson has already shown flashes of great potential.

Hopefully Jake Butt can be our full-time TE next year with Funchess remaining on the outside. I'm interested to see if Gardner will read defenses better when he doesn't have Gallon to zero in on constantly. Should be harder to defend the offense when the ball is spread around to many receivers.

Another thing I would like to see is RB flare routes as a check-down instead of always staying in the backfield as an extra blocker. Fade routes to Funchess need to happen every game.
