I graduated 3 years ago, and am in med school in Wayne State, and try to crush it everyday so I can go back to UofM for my residency. I have never had more pride in anything in my entire life than I do with Michigan. Its striving for the best and the becoming the best, but doing it the right way. I love MICHIGAN and I know Michigan changed my life and a lot of yours.

The most important topic discussed was the tragic event in Connecticut. The notion that this site decides to resrict the discussion of this seminal event is unfortunate. I understand the 'ground rules' but what happened today demands a careful consideration of these ground rules. This discussion needs to take place and it needs to supplant the discussions that take place here every day.

Well...you're right, as are the other 2 responses. The last thing we want to do after something like this is to think about it and talk about it. We'll do what we've been doing for decades-ignore gun violence.

This was a seminal event and to lock the thread and prevent the discussion about this topic is wrong. So we'll keep talking about the mundane things that border on trivia and ignore the fact that 15,000 people are killed every year in the US as the result of gun violence. And unless we have a broad based, widespread discussion focusing on gun violence events like this will continue. Sometime in the future, unless things change, there will be repeat of what we saw today. We'll wring our hands and stomp our feet but unless we talk about it nothing will change.

I've lived very close to Newtown. I've seen gun violence up close. I just want the discussion. So, open the locked thread. Do the right thing.

One of the things that makes MGoBlog a (relatively) collegial and friendly environment for Michigan fans is the lack of political discourse, which is inevitably what any discussion about the tragedy in Connecticut would turn to. The stated purpose of this site is coverage of University of Michigan athletics; other topics are certainly welcome, but nearly all relate to the sites core purpose in some way.

Zone Left definitely made the right call locking the thread, as I can't image how several hundred comments on a highly political issue like the finer points of the Second Amendment would enhance anyone's experience of this Michigan sports blog.

I agree. You should do the right thing and take this over to any number of the infinite websites that are political or news forum and change the world by discussing your heart out there. I hear MLive is pretty busy if you want a local slant. This site in no way keeps keep from talking about it. They just keep it from being talked about here. And frankly, they've given you a lot of "free speech" here by not bombing you for not bringing up a discussion but flat out making a political point.

We have enough to fight about here just on Michigan sports. We do not need a million other topics to argue about.

I wonder if Hoke hates Rothstein's questions as much as I do.  Rothstein on the SEC: "Right, but I mean the SEC has had such dominance over the past decade."  Rothstein on Norfleet: "Is there a concern at that position because of his height?"  Does every question have to have a negative/dickish attitude to it?

Strength equipment is expensive and guarantees you nothing.  A strong will is free and can give you everything you want.

I mean, you do realize who you're talking about right?  Dickish inherently goes with the territory.

While Hoke may not like Rothstien's questions, I like the way he always seems to answer Angelique by name at least once every presser.  She's the one person in the MSM who has never done anything to damage the program and can always be trusted to be professional, during good times or bad times.

Maybe a better way to put it is that she never tries to make herself the story.  That is increasingly rare in this era.
