Hahahahahaha that's hilarious. Although I wouldn't say American commentators are boring, but they are annoying and can't go two seconds without talking. Watching hockey on an American network is just the worst, and I often mute Monday night football between plays. There's a lot of things about America that I love, but your sports commentators aren't one of them.

In my mind its 1968 and I'm a nine year old boy at my parents cottage in Brights Grove, Canada on the southern edge of Lake Huron.  It's a hot summer day and I'm playing on the beach with my dad's transistor radio on listening to the Tigers game.  Denny McClain is pitching and I can still hear Ernie call the game.....

Ahhhh memories.

I'm not sure but either Norm Cash or Willie Horton hit a home run to win the game late.

My buddy is in broadcasting at UM and works for BTN, etc. He was doing play by play for the student broadcast of that game and on that play, he completely hijacks the call. The ball is hiked, Denard goes right and you hear him erupt: "big hole. BIG HOLE. GO. GO. GO!!!!"

I wish there was a youtube video of it

Believe it or not I got chills reading your post while envisioning that play. Video would be nice, but I still appreciate the post.

In related news, I'm a tigers fan living in Chicago and I have to listen to Hawk's (White sox) commentary and I cant. f-ing. stand him. My roommate is a sox fan and also dislikes him but he enjoys his home run call, "He gone!" I cant stand it because not only is it annoying, it takes all the spontaneity out of a home run call/broadcasting if you say the same thing every time for certain situations.

that muted out the commentators only during football games, and the only thing I could hear were the sounds on the field ... I miss that tv!!

If you want enthusiasm in the calls, you really need to watch or listen to the local broadcasts.  I think the national announcers have to show some degree of unbias when covering the game.  The local broadcasters not so much.  Although listening to the soccer call makes me miss Ufer.

That was Bergkamp's legendary goal vs Argentina in the 98 World Cup. Just for fun, in this video you can compare Dutch commentary against BBC and ABC.

Sorry, haven't mastered embedding yet.

For some EPL games, Sky broadcast alternate audio called Fanzone where you get commentary from two commentators (one for each team) who are just regular fans. Some of the banter is hilarious.
