Submitted by G-Man on

Dave Brandon tours the Crisler renovation and the Big House, interspersed with interview segments of his thoughts on how they look.

Best part might be seeing the new scoreboards in action.

Yeah, the new scoreboards look tremendous with some Denard highlights running on loop up there. Hopefully this season follows suit...

Looking great, though.

Yes, gotta love the scoreboards, but I think I'm more impressed with the basketball court itself.  It finally looks like a high-quality floor, especially with the darker colored wood within the 3 point lines.

I will not be shocked at all one day when I turn on Letterman and Brandon is one of his guests. The man sure likes to give an interview. That being said, the renovations look amazing.

My grandmother always used to tell me (in a joking way) that children should be seen and not heard. That is how I like my AD's. Make the public appearances when necessary but for pete sake stop with the interviews already. When the AD is doing more interviews that the players and coaches combined I think there is a problem. I wasn't Bill Martin's biggest fan (though I think he did some great work) but at least he stayed behind the scenes for the most part.

You can argue that Brandon overdoes it (I don't necessarily disagree), but I'll take that over Martin's aloofness.  During the stadium renovation debate, Martin was pretty much silent while the "Save the Big House" campaign threatened to derail the process.  I think it's very important for the AD to be an effective advocate for his department when needed.  Brandon likely would have explained much more clearly the necessity and benefits of the renovation, and reduced a lot of the controversy.

I have no problem with the AD doing more interviews than the coaches or players,  The coaches are incredibly busy, and most 18-22-year-olds aren't polished speakers.  Giving college athletes live microphones is often asking for trouble.

Sure in terms of the renovations it makes sense. I'm sure there are other instnces where it makes sense for the AD to take interviews as well, I'm not saying they should never get in front of the mic.

My problem is this guy is everywhere and always seems to be putting in his two cents where IMHE it doesn't belong. I would like the face of our program to be the coach or the players, not the AD but Bradon seems like he wants to become that.

To the poster above you, the arguement that good leaders need to be visible is a bit absurd to be honest. They need to be visible to their companies (or whatever they are leading) not the world at large. How many of the top CEO, CAO's CFO's etc etc etc are doing public interviews as often as DB is? Sorry but the idea that in order for DB to be a great leader he needs to be in front of camera's every other day is beyond weak.

...that were saying the scoreboards don't look that much bigger than the old ones?

The basketball programs are going from skid row to Park Ave in one fell swoop with the completion of the PDC and Crisler Ph1.  Truly tremendous.

I was never one of the ones that said the scoreboards didn't look much bigger as I was aware that the old ones only had a portion dedicated to video, but just because someone doesn't agree with you about something or even if they are wrong in their opinion about something, doesn't make them idiots.

I could be wrong but did the block M at mid court get turned around or did the locker room tunnel get put on the other side of the arena? Last year when the M was facing that way the locker room tunnel was on the other side of the arena.

I bet Brandon wishes they were a little bit bigger......

They're still plenty big, but I was under the impression that they'd be bigger.

One thing missing from the video is a view of the Player Development Center from the outside. It’s an impressive-looking building, and it’s clearly going to be a huge plus in recruiting. Here’s a recent shot from the Michigan Stadium Aerials site:

I'm more impressed with the basketball practice facility than the scoreboards or anything else. That thing is going to be killer.

At first I wasn't sure about DB.  And i'm not going to just jump on his bandwagon because he gets a couple projects off the ground.  However, after growing up in Ann Arbor and living there for 22 years before I moved away, he seems to be pretty good at making sure he keeps up with his competitors.  One of many aspects he certainly sustained in the corporate world for Dominoe's.  We'll see how this translates into success within the athletics programs.

I don't like the B1G logo on the court. "This might sound arrogant and if it is, it is, but we're Michigan." the Block M is all we need on the court

Can I assume their will be more seats or bleachers going into the open areas along both sidelines?  Maybe the bleachers are pushed in , although that seems kind of high schoolish.

The open areas are probably going to have something similar to what was there before—collapsible/removable sections of bleachers and/or seats. Keep in mind that Crisler is also used for women's gymnastics, which requires a larger amount of floor space than is used for basketball, so they can't have permanent seats going right down to court-level.

Anyone else notice Brandon refer to the previous scoreboards as, "those damn undersized scoreboards"?

I know it's less of a big deal in today's world, but for an AD who says he really wants to build an atmosphere which will attract young kids (i.e. mascot), I'm a little surprised.
