Video: 1988 Michigan Replay Season Recap

Submitted by Thorin on

I just triple checked to make sure Wolverine Historian didn't already upload this. WTF dude, did you forget to set your VCR that day? :-p

Thanks a lot for the upload.

Were shoulder pads more bulky back in the day? Or were the uniforms looser? Something about the fit just looks different, almost awkward.  Also all the short shorts and tight pants I'm seeing on the sidelines? Geeze. Looking at the stands 80's fashion wasn't kind.

I know I'm showing football ignorance with this. But when Bo was talking about the drop off in Gillette's PK game due to doing both PK and punting, why is that?  Is it because he needs to practice both so doesn't get to refine technique? Or does it have to do with getting tired? Or is it just practicing both changes the mechanics of how you're going to approach the PK job?

There's just something special hearing Bo say "Big Ten Championship". There's also something awesome about watching Bo freak the f' out.

The Navy-Maryland Fishman "salute" documentary that was also included was pretty hilarious.

This was an incredible season. I turned 9 in November that year; this was a great time to grow up a Michigan fan.

I lived that season. I love that season.

EDIT: Turned into a tl;dr post of interesting observations that were not interesting enough to merit the length. Great memories from the video, though.

I remember it well.  As a huge Michigan fan, the 1988 season is very special to me.  Had I been able to continue playing football beyond the 7th grade (my 8th grade year my school switched from flag football to soccer), and attended a high school that played football (my high school was only 3 years old when I was a freshman), and had I been good enough to be recruited by Bo, 1988 would have been my 5th year senior season.

I had this on VHS tape growing up, and used to watch the thing just about every day for a few years.  Of all the Michigan Replay season recaps I've seen over the years, it's by far the best.

Thanks for uploading it, it's a pain in the ass having to haul out a VCR every time I want to watch the thing.

Ha.  The only thing I taped in 1988 was Saturday morning cartoons (Muppet Babies, Garfield & Friends, TMNT & Bugs Bunny.)  So thanks.  I had actually never seen this recap.  I have the 89 version but not this one.

I don't think this was ever shown on TV back in the day (though, apparently, it has been recently).  It was only officially released on VHS.  The Athletic Department had a series of tapes released by a local TV production company in conjunction with Michigan Replay from ~89-93ish, and MDen only sold out the last bit of old stock about six or seven years ago.

There were season retrospectives for at least '88, '89, and '92, a Desmond Howard/Tom Harmon highlight tape, and a Bo retirement retrospective.  There may be more than that, but I've never seen any of the others pop up around Ann Arbor at the antique shops, thrift stores, or book sales.
