The Victors

Submitted by Dess on

Ever since I was a little kid, any time I had a musical instrument in front of me and I could figure out a basic scale, the first thing I would ever try to play is the Victors. Or, you know, the part where everyone sings.

Elementary school with my plastic recorder, the victors. I just dug it out of my closet to see if I could remember how to play it, and yes.

When I was in sixth grade and first learned French horn, after hot cross buns, and some other wonderfully basic songs, the Victors.

Trumpet (Got to use my sheet music)

Piano, well even now, any time I walk by a piano I tap out the Victors before leaving.

Violin.

Guitar.

The music has enchanted me. Filled my with a longing and anticipation of football Saturdays and the university that I dreamed of attending. The first letter I ever sent through the mail was to the U-M band director telling them how I hoped to play for them one day. I received a beautiful piece of sheet music for The Victors (trumpet) in response. It had the University of Michigan seal and was printed on very heavy, beautiful paper. I framed it and still have it. I cherish that piece of sheet music. It sat above my desk as I worked while attending community college. It was the embodiment of hope. Struggling to make ends meet, and then finally making it into Michigan. The sheet music now sits framed together with my degree.

Hail to the victors.

Ive never heard the Victors played live. I have a chance to this fall. I have a choice to either go to the first game under the lights, or go to Michigan-Ohio State. I've never been to a game before so I dont really know which one to choose. I'm hoping y'all  can help me out. First game under the lights? Or best rivalry in all of sports?

That is a really tough call, but the great thing is that you won't go wrong either way. I was about to write down that OSU is the better choice because the rivalry is so intense, but then it occurred to me that the first night game is history in the making. Let us know which one you decide on . . .

To hijack your question a bit, I was hoping to get some ideas about seeing a game this season. I've never been to Michigan Stadium for a football game, and I'm trying to decide whether to go to the Purdue home game or go to Evanston to see NU/M under the lights. Money is a factor, but it looks like things would almost even out:

Northwestern: 40-50 a ticket, would need a hotel room, just me and the girlfriend doing the tailgating.

Purdue: 65-75 a ticket, would be able to crash at my fraternity's chapter house and the tailgating that goes on with that.

Any thoughts from people about going to Michigan Stadium for a lower tier opponent or going to Evanston for a divisional game under the lights (also very close to home for me, so maybe a home cooked meal at some point too)?

I'd go with the chance to see the Big House for the first time. I know that it's right in the name, but it is hard to get a handle on how big and imposing the thing is until you are there with a capacity crowd making noise. Also, getting to party at the house will be great. Of course, if you want to see the family, that is a totally different thing.

I'm leaning towards that. I was in for the Big Chill, so I've seen the crowd.

Also, when I was in middle school I joined the XC team and my uncle (an A2 resident and M alum) decided that we should run the steps at the Big House whenever I came up, so I do have a pretty good appreciation for how big that place really is.

And congrats on finally getting into Michigan and getting your degree.

I'm always amazed at the number of people who follow Michigan who have never seen a game live or went to the U, like a couple of people on this thread. A former client of mine in Chatham, Ontario, Canada was a huge Michigan fan and yet had never been to Ann Arbor. It speaks to the traditions and appeal of the school and its teams that this is so.

As someone who could have, and for all intents and purposes should have went to U of M on a band scholarship, I have nothing but respect for you.

The University of Michigan Symphony Band under the direction of Professor Michael Haithcock recently concluded their tour of China.  The tour was part of an ongoing cultural project between the University of Michigan and the People's Republic of China.  I didn't personally go on this tour, but I did have the privilege of helping perform some of the music that was played on the tour with Symphony Band last year.  I also know A LOT of the people in the band.  Love you guys--xoxo

Anyways, here's an excerpt from the band arrangement of Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Bach:
