The Victors Rally - Students read and pass along

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
For those that are interested, at the Victor's Rally this Sunday at the Michigan Theater, if you're one of the first 100 students, and say "ALL IN FOR MICHIGAN", you get in for free. If not, it's $2 going to charity. (But I wouldn't worry about taking advantage of saving the $$, because someone donated the money for the students to get in). Pass it along to others, as they just announced it on the radio this morning (The free thing, not the rally). If someone has any interest in the event, here's some details (said to go to 3:30)- http://michtheater.org/events.php#victors The Victors' Rally - A Celebration of Michigan Football Presented by National HR Solutions Sunday, February 21 1:00 PM Tickets: $5 adults, $2 students, free for kids 12 & under Available On: On sale now Available From: Advance tickets are available at ticketweb.com Like our great country, the greatest college football program in the nation is going through some uncharacteristically tough times. that prompted Sam's rant? I didn't, but I inferred from Sam's comments that someone on the afternoon show—either the host and/or some callers— were alleging that the proceeds from the event were lining somebody's pockets, and that one of the purposes of the thing was to bash Lloyd Carr. Both are outright lies. All of the proceeds are going to the Adopt-a-Family program that WTKA has sponsored the last several Christmases (that I've contributed to myself), and the director and creator of that program was on the morning show yesterday talking about Sunday's event. As for the notion that somehow the event will be a forum for bashing Carr, a cursory glance at the list of people who are supposed to take part—including such names as Larry Foote, Frank Beckmann, and Gary Moeller—would tell anyone with a brain that bashing Carr would be the last thing taking place.

He was insinuating it by "questioning" it, even though it sounds like this morning that Ira talked to him after Wednesday's show. And then let callers pile on the baseless accusations. I can only guess he's a bit more disgruntled than Brian was about the new afternoon lineup. Because as frustrated as Ira sounded this morning, I can't imagine he's the one getting the job. It starts with podcast 8- http://www.wtka.com/index.php?fuseaction=home.podcasts_sel&id=3639 And probably continues all the way through #12 or 13 at the end.

I thought this would be your typical talk radio blather. But DeFran actually sounds very angry, I have to imagine he knows his days at the station are numbered or something because I cant imagine acting like that for any other reason. He seemed to be going out of his way to trash the event and the station. At least to me this appeared to go way beyond radio 'schtik'... But considering he is working as a host two days a week at a small local talk radio station after being in the industry for 25 years should give you some clue as to where a bit of the anger is coming from... Actually, I don't. There was that wack station manager who was neutering the whole station. He let Fithian go to put in lame national programming, than lame in state programming in the afternoon. And the morning show was musical chairs. I mean, I think they let DeFran go, and kept Dave Shand of all people (even if not for much long), who I couldn't stand. He just seemed like a dick. Someone other there probably loves him. And then the way Sam hints how much his job sucked and how he was going to leave when he first took over till Andy became his co-host and got him to like it, I don't imagine their replacements were barrels of laughs. I always like Steve Clarke more than any of them anyway. So, if you've got the cliffnotes version, I'd love to hear it.

He had a meltdown on-air where he chewed out (?)Mike Wickett(?) for jokingly throwing an empty water bottle at him or something like that. Just laid into the kid. He came back from commercial, had to apologize for it, and was gone the next day. From what I understand, it wasn't the first time something like that had happened, and he wasn't well-liked amongst the staff at the station. I was pretty surprised when he was brought back to WTKA, even if most of the people who were there when he was were long gone.

I share his frustration with the W-L record, BUT. . . He intimated that this was going to be "all about" Rich Rodriguez. Based on no information other than his imagination. He questioned where the money went. It has been WELL publicized exactly where the profit would go -- charity. So he's either dishonest or dumb. He intimated there was something fishy about Lloyd not being there. Again, positioning his ad-hoc, mis-informed musings as though they have some sort of veracity. He even questioned whether Lloyd really retired. He left open the possiblity that he was somehow forced out, despite no evidence of that whatsoever. This guy continually broadcasts his free associations as if they have some kind of moral weight. The problem is some people who listen take the spoken broadcast word as gospel. In my opinion, DeFran is very irresponsible. He then continued on his usual nonsense. They're all out to get him because he criticizes the record under Rodriguez, Rodriguez "tore down" the program to rebuild it in his image yadda, yadda . . . the usual canards. Look, last season left me with concerns. The results were below my expectations. I'm sure they were below Rodriguez' expectations and he needs to get it fixed. The DC situation was a debacle (hopefully fixed with GERG). But DeFran's arguments are so devoid of any nuance or evidence, it's unreal this guy is allowed on the air. And, yeah, it's unfortunate Kope is hopeless as a debater.

In full disclosure, I used to like DeFran. Sometimes he was the only on air bastion fighting off the ARGGGHH FIRE LLOYD call-in masses. But that was when I thought he was being reasonable, and not just protecting his buddy. Somehow he doesn't see the contradiction is being reasonable with Lloyd, but not with Rich Rod. (Yes, Rich hasn't earned quite as much...but still...). There are reasonable points to be made that Rich hasn't cut it so far...but he doesn't make any of them, and in fact argues things that are provably false, then complains when people complain and won't "debate him on the facts". That's because only the "Beatniks" call in, and he seems to ignore regularly info Ira tells him to the contrary (technically his boss, no?), and the station doesn't seem to have the gumption to have him, J Raddy (?), Sam and say Brian in the same studio together for a full on debate. You know, "facts vs. facts". He's become what he uses as his "street cred"...just one of those haters, just like the ones who wanted Lloyd out. I really don't see "Rich Rod bashers" as a put upon minority, as he likes to victimize himself as. I think the sides are pretty even. The minority is the group I'm in...the one who thought Lloyd did a great job, Rich was a great hire, who's done not a great job so far, but certainly deserves at LEAST this season to prove he can get it together. The "I like 'em both" doesn't seem to get much airtime.

unless Sam, Brian or Ira are on. Too much negativity, piling on or outright hate from the other hosts/shows towards Michigan and I can get that crap from the Freep if I really want it. If yesterday's show had Defran on it, I wouldn't be surprised if he made a comment that set Sam off. Defran's done nothing but take shots at Rodriguez and stir the pot since he returned to the station. This event sounds cool and I think I'll take my boys down there Sunday. The money goes to an excellent cause and the team could use all the support we can give them.

Yeah, that's what he started making fun of...which would have been fine if he left it at that, because it IS overly dramatic. I mean, I agree, the whole thing sounds kinda hokey. But he continued on saying the station isn't involved in it (it is), that Lloyd wasn't invited (whether he was or not, I don't think Mo, Brandstatter, et al are REALLY going to be involved in dissing Lloyd), and that where was the money going (even though it's involved in a charity that has been long tied into the station), all because Copi (who can't argue anything well, unfortunately) questioned him and get got mad. Then let the usual callers pile on. Though having Leach as the MC probably wasn't the best idea...

If you think the event on Sunday is hokey, then so are: • Pep rallies on the diag • The Victor's walk prior to home games • Standing and singing the "Victors" and "The Yellow and Blue" at halftime • The postseason Football Bust • Virtually everything else connected to college football other than the play on the field

I'm not really sure how this event, an organized pay to view meet the few in February for a team that has been miserable the last two years, has ANYTHING to do with anything you list...because most are for the students, or, you know, AT the games...(and the bust is by Alumni for ALL the current football team), but whatever. I'm not sure I think I'm interested in precanned videos and speeches 7 months before the season, trying to link success past to failure current, but YMMV. And it's going to a really good cause, so more power to them. I hope they pack the house. It's just really not my bag. Edit: BTW, the advertisement I copied above (Which obviously I don't have a major objection to the event if I'm helping promote it) - hokey. Yes, Michigan Football has been unbelievably painful to me, probably unhealthily so, but to compare it to our crashing economy and millions of people out of work, including MGoBoarders...a bit of hyperbole, don't you think?

I'm jealous. We used to go to the annual football bust, and I really enjoyed meeting the players and getting Bo to sign my mini Michigan helmet. It was a blast. This sounds fun, too.
