Very OT: The Hangover 3 *Thread May Contain Spoilers*

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Anyone see it?

They completely tossed the 'Hangover' formula and tried to come up with a new concept. It didn't work.

I won't put plot spoilers here in the OP, but I will say that it's not really a comedy. It's some sort of action/triller ala 'Speed' with comedians in it.

I never make movie related threads, but obviously this is a popular franchise and I'm sure many MGoBloggers are planning to see it this weekend. My advice, don't.

Arguably the worst move I've ever seen in my entire life. I thought the 1st one was legendary. I thought the 2nd one was "meh" because it took the 1st one and sprinkled it with steriods.

#3 doesn't do either, but the producers, directors and writers completely missed the boat on what made The Hangover so great.

It's the same thing that made American Pie good for young folks (and some older) in it's day. The same thing that even made Project X surprisingly watchable...there are "demon" in all of us, and a dark side that if we could have one night to fuck-shit-up...we'd want it to be like that (Hangover 1).

Hangover 2 wasn't "meh" because it was pretty much the same movie, it was "meh" because no one wants to wake up in a shit motel with a tattoo on their face. No one wants to watch a monkey play with a little Asian mans penis. No one wants to have a transgender prostitute ejaculate into them. While it may have been funny, they lost the "DAMN! THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!" that they had in Hangover 1.

The same goes with the finale. You don't even sorta-kinda envy those guys anymore...you just want it to end.

A shame, because I thought the first Hangover was awesome. They could've made a GREAT trilogy. Instead they forgot the one thing that made #1 special and the last two suffered.

Many of you still will, but with as much as movies cost these days, there's no way I'd spend money on Hangover Part 3.

I saw it last night, and I actually thought it was pretty funny. Parts of it were very predictable, but still very entertaining. Don't trust my take on movies though as I have never seen any of the Dark Knights, Ironmans, etc but I did see Olympus has Fallen and Battleship and thought that those were awesome.

They should have just left it at the first movie. That one was an all time classic, and there was almost no way they could possibly top it or not re-hash old material. Setting up additional movies was a recipe for failure.

Speak for yourself.

But really, I can believe it wasn't good, but I seriously doubt it was the worst movie you ever saw. There are some really bad movies out there.

...but I don't want to watch bad movies, lol.

Gigli, Batman & Robin, Jack & Jill, Movie 43, Alexander and anything else you can think of...I've never seen because everyone knows how BAD they all are.

It was REALLY bad. No exaggeration.

I didn't like Funny People w/ Adam Sandler, but I thought that was even better than this. They're not really comparable, I was just trying to find a movie everyone thought would be funny...but wasn't.

For the record, I HAVE seen (and love) The Dark Knight Triology, thus my opinion should matter.

I'm hoping Anchorman 2 and/or The Internship will be funny (my money's on Anchorman 2 if I had to guess), because Hangover 3 failed.

And again, this isn't that guy who hates all things mainstream...I'm not the guy, in every "Datbull" thread talking about how bad rap music is and how Tribe Called Quest is audio orgasm. I'm not the person who wants to be different, just to be different.

I'm giving it to you guys straight, don't believe me...look at the reviews. They're awful as well.

Am I saying you will never laugh? No. The characters alone make certain things funny or expressions that everyone will laugh at. But as a whole, it's really not that funny and the script is far too based on Alan and Chow.

HOWEVER, make sure you stay through the credits...there's a teaser that may be funnier than the entire movie.

If you didn't see them?  I mean, you saw Hangover 3 as early as possible it seems....so you just heard the others were bad before you saw them?

Sounds like a separate summer thread....what movies did you go to see that you expected to be good but ended up sucking.

Edit: And yes, I saw Gigli. In the theater. It was hilarious. But not how they intended it to be. Walken's speech is classic. I completely lost it. As did the other 3 people in the theater. I yearn for MST3000.

Actually I knew it was going to be bad because I have a couple of friends that saw it on Monday at the prescreening.

Also, if you simply Google'd Hangover 3 reviews between Monday and Wednesday, there weren't very many positive things.

I ended up having a free ticket, so as a fan of the franchise, I decided to go at 10:30 last night to the first showing.

But I knew going in that people didn't think highly of it, however I had to see for myself. That's why I assume, people will still see it despite people in this thread saying it's not worth the money.

We've recently seen Dark Knight Rises and Iron Man 3 put out nice third movies.

The 3rd Bourne (Ultimatum) was awesome.

Ocean's Thirteen didn't get great reviews, but I actually liked it...not my favorite movie, but certainly FX watchable when it's on.

I don't think a 3rd movie always has to be a poorly done money grab, I think it can tie in the story and be a good movie on it's own.

Hell, even the Fast & Furious franchise is what it is for its fans and the people who like those movies. Don't change the formula, just blow shit up and drive fast cars and don't crazy stunts...and lots and lots of baby oil. But it works (well from #4 to #6 after the actors realized they have no career outside of that franchise).

Last thought, in no one am I saying they should've stuck to the Hangover 1 formula and beaten it to death. I'm just saying they should've made a good movie and what they made was truly bad...and lacking in laughs. And for no other reason other than they no longer tap into that "damn, that would be pretty cool" in all of us.

i am glad that OP brought up the American Pie movies as the teen ager analog of these. the second one is the bad ideas that didn't amke it into the first one, the third one is ideas that you just grab onto and hope they somehow relate to something.

can we stop with making things trilogies?

thats the movie I think they're playing and I wonder why. You're not alone!

While we're talking about movies did anyone else notice in Bill Simmons' latest column (maybe 2 weeks ago, I dont think he writes much anymore) that he admitted he had never seen any of the "Matrix" movies?  I'm pretty sure he was serious. I normally wouldn't care but that seems like a helluva thing for a guy running a pop culture website (and also as someone who has appointed himself a pop cuture guru for years) to admit.

Or maybe Im the only one who finds that odd/interesting

If talking about the party movie.  It was kind of funny and if nothing else you could spend time thinking about how very puchable the New York kid's face was.

If talking about the Matthew Broderick 80's movie, you have no soul.

as anyone who has wandered over to my blog can attest. I worked at a theater in HS and college (the one over in Ypsi at corner of 94 & 23) and saw pretty much everything that came out from 1998-2004 for free, so I saw a ton of awful movies. I highly doubt that this one will crack my top 10 worst movies i've ever seen list, but it doesn't look too promising.  I'll be waiting for the DVD on this one, not going to waste $10 a ticket on this thats for sure.

so thats why they aren't on my list, because the list is the worst I've ever seen.  I learned my lesson in how awful the series was having watched the first, I wasn't about to waste my time on a direct to dvd film with a recasting of the title role. I'd imagine they'd have made the list if I did suffer through them though.  Thankfully, I'm not a paid critic so I don't have to watch everything if I don't want to.

It upsets me that you have seen Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, and Meet the Spartans. Date Movie was the last time I was tricked into renting one of those movies.

Worst movie I have ever seen is Jaws of Satan. It's like Anaconda, if the snake was just a normal sized snake...possessed by the devil...but not with powers or anything. Godawful.

While I didn't think Hangover 2 was very good it had funny moments and it was enjoyable enough seeing the characters interact again.

I'm amazed that anybody is surprised that Hangover part III sucks.  Face it - the key element in the original Hangover was the surprise that audience and each of the central characters shared as they peeled back the past to discover what had already happened.  That is was shared by four people and not just one very hungover individual is a pretty unique concept in both a movie and real life (thankfully).  So to try and repeat something unique destroys the very concept the original was predicated on.

Sorry Hollywood but some concepts and some movies simply CANNOT have sequels no matter how badly you want to extend the financial gain of the "franchise".  Would anybody be surprised if JFK II, Sixth Sense II or More Life of Pi would be bad movies?  There simply was no more story to be told or no surprise left to uncover.

Nobody should be surprised by the Hangover III being horrible too.  It was destined to be.

there are diminishing returns with sequels and trilogies.  Hell even Godfather III was terrible. Anybody who expecting anything less than a gem in this third movie was setting themselves up bigtime.  I will probably go see it of course, but I don't have the expectation that it was going to be as good as the first or even on par with the second one.   I agree with you 100%

Am I the only person in the world who thought Godfather 3 (or III, whatever) was good? I certainly agree that it wasn't as good as the preceeding two, but people act like it was the worst movie ever made. Admittedly the incest stuff was weird, but it eventually added to the plot and set up the climax of the story. I thought if it was an indepedent movie not judged based off the first 2 it was good, enjoyable, a new take on a Greek tragedy (as the whole trilogy was).

Anybody else not hate the 3rd Godfather?

So here's the only way a sequel could work, and it's not a guarantee.

People loved the characters from the first.  Instead of submerging them into the same tired dialogue, give them a new stage.  Why not focus on the one guy's dentist office, with the other guys playing big roles outside of work?  Introduce them to different situations so that you don't have to make the same stale joke.  Make it like a waspy midlife version of Barbershop somehow.  If done right, it opens an avenue to new material with characters we already like.  You don't have to get highbrow, but focus on the characters, not the recurring situation.  Hollywood likes to chase it's own tail, but it makes for a bunch of crappy movies.
