an excellent story on a truly amazing young man and his mother. It shows we are even more fortunate to have Rashan at Michigan.

We were right behind Rashan and the rest of the class in the North end zone. There was a thunderous roar when Rashan's name was called...everybody went ham!

Hats off to Rashan and his mother. With his attitude and work effort the kid's got a bright future in or off the field. So great to know he'll soon be at Michigan.

While I liked the story and the information in it, I couldn't help but be struck at the excessively poor writing skills on display.  I thought it was all over the place, with no flow or chronology to make it an easier read.  This is why Snyder will only ever be a beat writer, IMO.  I'll admit that I'm somewhat biased - I don't like Snyder.  He takes subtle shots at UM all the time, and frankly, I'm a little surprised he has as much access as he does.  Basically, he's an asshat I could do without.  But, as the beat writer for UM, he has information on/about the program that I starve for, so I'll continue feeding him clicks so long as he feeds me news.

But this story, to be fair, has none of the subtle shots I just complained about.  It is a good read, even if poorly written, that has some good moments.

And Happy Mother's Day to all the MGoMoms!!

Hard to believe both a professional writer and an editor let that go through. I got the feeling it was hastily edited, perhaps to get it under the wire for Mother's Day. Good article though, largely because the strength and appeal of the people he was writing about more than offset whatever flaws there were in the prose. Jennifer Coney continues to impress me as a world class mother and person, and I loved how she takes such joy at the prospect of Rashan thriving at Michigan. Great Mother's Day story.

BTW, for you guys (and girls) that don't read the Freep, there are a couple of other story's you may be interested in this morning.  One about how Paramus reeled in Harbaugh for the graduation address, and one on Micheal Dwumfour (he was working with Rashan while the Rashan story was being written/researched).

A good day for the Freep...

The Freep intentionally and maliciously attacked our program with the intent of doing nothing more than mudslinging. Will not support them.

It could be the best story ever written and I won't click on it. My ban of all things freep ends when they fire their entire sports writing team and apologize to Michigan.

I am free to click on Free links because I expect failure from everyone at every turn. When someone does not fail, that's reason to rejoice. So I have read the article and rejoiced at the lack of fail.

Freep or not, a nice lighthearted piece and good for Mothers Day. Article also reminds me of the Sparty fans floating the idea that state and other schools were concerned about Gary's ability to keep up academically. Laughable coming from sparties on face, even more laughable after reading about Gary's academic prowess. Also gives you pause ...how many less attentive and involved parents out there wind up being bamboozled by the bagmen and car dealers and other "friends" of lesser schools?? Go Blue! Go Gary! Go Mothers!!!! Ps - anyone else see Coach tweeting out pics of players and Moms today? Love it ...

The line ...posted on a Message Board was this --

"A guy I know who works for the MSU AD said that the MSU recruiters and other schools' recruiters are afraid that Gary won't be able to stay academically eligible in college"

It was posted with sincerity and as if it were true and as a "told ya so" sort of thing for we M fans who were so giddy about landing the #1 overall prospect.

Laughable, but he really seemed to believe it.  LOL ...all that academic rigor in lansing

Sorry this is unrelated but I need help.

Just got a letter regarding my first ever season tickets so I've been on my phone trying to pay for the tickets.

Has anybody else had trouble using their phone to checkout on the mgoblog website?

I will despise the freep till I take my dirt nap.  As for the article, essentially meh writing around an epic subject.  Not sure why Snyder had to mention at the end of the article in the Big Men on Campus:  2011: Jadeveon Clowney, DEcrushing hit on U-M's Vincent Smith in the 2013 Outback Bowl.”  Was that really fucking necessary?

MOD EDIT - I shortened this to a select Mother's Day-ish quote. While I share in everyone's distrust of the Detroit Free Press' coverage of Michigan athletics, posting the entire article, including the bloody photo captions WITHOUT THE PHOTOS, mind you, seems just a little too animated even for this place. - LSA

“Heck no, Rashan doesn’t realize all I sacrifice,” Coney said, ripping off that hearty laugh. “I do it for myself. No matter what happens to me, I know my son is well-mannered, he shows respect, he’s courteous. He understands the importance of having good relationships, not burning bridges, being respectful and the importance of education and hard work. If you want to be a football player, do everything to be the best.”

So proud to have Jennifer Coney and Rashan Gary as part of the Michigan family. They clearly have their eyes on the prize-- a great education and an opportunity to compete at the highest level.
The great thing about Michigan is that nothing is given, whether in the classroom or on the field. You must work your hardest, compete with the best and then let nature take its course.
Rashan and his peers will get the best education, in football and their chosen fields. What's more, they can count on the sincere support of their coaches, athletic staff, academic mentors, teammates, alumni and Michigan fan-base. All they need to do is keep their focus on excellence, disregard temporary setbacks (which always seem to happen) and enjoy the experience of attending one of the world's greatest educational institutions.
Happy Mother's Day!

I'm really glad Rashan knows we the fans are behind him and supporting him, not just having expectations that we feel entitled to. Maybe hopes is a better word than expectations. But either way it seems that our support and our excitement in having him in Ann Arbor really pushes him to succeed. I have not been more excited to see a recruit step on the field since I asked my orientation leader, "Who's Sam McGuffie?" and she incredulously filled me in and got me hyped for the coming season (but that's another story).
